Translation: we know this game looks derivative, but that's a good thing, trust us. On the top of my head I can't think of a game that it wasn't derivative in some way in years. Nier:Automata? Undertale? Journey? LittleBigPlanet? Bayonetta? Katamari Damacy? BioShock? Papers, Please? Shadow of the Colossus? Unless you mean all Bioware games have been derivative, in which case I might say Jade Empire, but that's borderline I admit.

I meant to say in recent years, as in the last 3-4, and in AAA games. I agree on indie games showing more innovation. Nier fits the bill, but it's an exception, or one of them, on the vast majority of recent games (again, in the AAA market).

shinobi602 @shinobi602
Important to note there are a lot of talented folks providing real, significant work on this in Austin as well. Aaryn Flynn aarynflynn Yes 100% Good to have that confirmed. Makes total sense. After launch, you have to continuously release expansion content to keep the money flowing. I wouldn't want Edmonton to be saddled with that. Well, with Austin having experience churning out content for SWTOR, I guess it's only natural to get them involved in a project that will likely be continually expanded.

The official website has a couple "hidden" images, which someone on reddit pointed outIn particular interest to me is some concept art of the freakin' Mech Wizard! (You can't convince me this isn't our "mage" equivalent! ...Please don't, I love me my sci-fi mages!) These armour concepts and the idea of "Mech Wizards" excites me more than the trailer did tbh. Really gorgeous designs

I feel like BioWare's fanbase will be entirely different in a year or two. So much Destiny players alreayd joining the Reddit. BioWare will be that big shot developer that created this awesome addictive game called Anthem, after they did some geeky RPG stuff in the past.

I'm fairly sure I heard the same "Bioware is not what it used to be before" from people who began their journey with titles like Baldur's Gate, in relation to times of Mass Effect or Dragon Age. As to how much they'd 'change or not'... we'll see. We don't know the future of ME, but Dragon Age as a franchise seems far from endangered.

AAA has been a derivative wasteland since, well, The Last Of Us came out. With a few exceptions, like DAI. The success of HZD seems to suggest that the best way to succeed in AAA is to do derivative waaaaaay better than anyone else. Maybe that's Anthem's game plan also? Nier isn't AAA, as I've been scolded about every time I tried to claim it was AAA on Reddit.

As was said elsewhere, think of Anthem being the big, fat AAA cash cow that helps fund DA4+ and maybe a new traditional RPG IP. I mean, Anthem needs to be a financial success, or Bioware is down to one bullet in the gun.

Too expensive to level all of the elements at the same time, forcing you to specialize. If Anthem lets you cover all elements without too much of a skill penalty, I'll reconsider.

If it succeeds, they will make more games like this I'm not interested in. While it may fund the other games, it is also taking resources from them. We know most of the DA crew switched over to Anthem for at least a while. With SWTOR they have BioWare Austin so that has never bothered me since they are different teams. This more directly impacts DA.

If it succeeds, they will make more games like this I'm not interested in. True, but what choice did they have? They couldn't grow revenue for EA without doing something new -- turning the crank on another Bioware-style RPG wasn't going to do it revenue-wise. This is very clear from the instant attention Anthem has attracted from Destiny/Division fans, some of whom have never even heard of Bioware. And now that the ME franchise is shelved, DA was going to be their only revenue stream. At least this way, if Anthem succeeds, DA's future is secure. Anthem failing is the same as not doing Anthem at all, so that's a wash and DA is put in jeopardy either way. You do have a point about resources, though. I'm afraid the institutional knowledge for how to do story-driven RPG is being lost, Anthem or no Anthem. Maybe RPG needs to hit a low point for a few years before some new studio comes along and breathes new life into it, kind of like how platformers and 8-bit games got resurrected.

And what will DA end up becoming? What the developers want it to be? I would prefer a return to DA:O in terms of gameplay, but i am sure it will be more action focused at this point. The hybrid model of DA:I didn't work that well, and i see them pushing ahead and not looking back. The conversation wheel and roleplaying oppurtunities will probably be like DA:I only better, and the story looks very promising as of right now. All in all in terms of what little we know and who's working on the game i think it'll be a stellar roleplaying game. Then again i am a hopeful and positive person, because the world is negative enough as it is. To infinity, and beyond!

And what will DA end up becoming? Why are we suddenly discussing DA as if it's future's at stake? As of now, there's no indication that there's any danger to the franchise or whatever direction BW would like to take it - and while bound by contracts, the devs keep winking at us faster than hummingbird's wings.

The Baldur's Gate people saying that would probably be right BioWare's path down the wrong road started when they released that abomination Baldur's Gate! They must return to their roots! And what will DA end up becoming? Why are we suddenly discussing DA as if it's future's at stake? As of now, there's no indication that there's any danger to the franchise or whatever direction BW would like to take it - and while bound by contracts, the devs keep winking at us faster than hummingbird's wings. I see no threat whatsoever to the 'GOTY' Dragon Age franchise...
