Why are we suddenly discussing DA as if it's future's at stake? As of now, there's no indication that there's any danger to the franchise or whatever direction BW would like to take it - and while bound by contracts, the devs keep winking at us faster than hummingbird's wings. There's clearly another DA in development. There's no clear indication what sort of game it will be. Personally, I'd like a refinement of DAI's design. Meatier ruleset and a better UI, but otherwise the same.

The Baldur's Gate people saying that would probably be right BioWare's path down the wrong road started when they released that abomination Baldur's Gate! They must return to their roots! Give me Shattered Steel 2!!!! Absolutely! It's terrible that such a great IP was abandoned in favour of filthy RPGs: Now this reminds me of something...

True, but what choice did they have? They couldn't grow revenue for EA without doing something new -- turning the crank on another Bioware-style RPG wasn't going to do it revenue-wise. This is very clear from the instant attention Anthem has attracted from Destiny/Division fans, some of whom have never even heard of Bioware. And now that the ME franchise is shelved, DA was going to be their only revenue stream. At least this way, if Anthem succeeds, DA's future is secure. Anthem failing is the same as not doing Anthem at all, so that's a wash and DA is put in jeopardy either way. You do have a point about resources, though. I'm afraid the institutional knowledge for how to do story-driven RPG is being lost, Anthem or no Anthem. Maybe RPG needs to hit a low point for a few years before some new studio comes along and breathes new life into it, kind of like how platformers and 8-bit games got resurrected. And what will DA end up becoming? A game where you can fly on griffins

Give me Shattered Steel 2!!!! I've argued for years that BioWare got it just about perfect when they released Baldur's Gate, but have been heading is largely the wrong direction ever since. BG2 was a big step backward, NWN was a return to form, but then KotOR was disappointingly small and they didn't release anything truly good until DAO and DAI.

Nier:Automata? Undertale? Journey? LittleBigPlanet? Bayonetta? Katamari Damacy? BioShock? Papers, Please? Shadow of the Colossus? Unless you mean all Bioware games have been derivative, in which case I might say Jade Empire, but that's borderline I admit. elite dangerous :3 Hatoful boyfriend *lol* the persona games are derivative of person games, but well obvious shit is obvious I mean, technically Hatoful Boyfriend has all the tropes of a normal dating sim. The "you're a post-apocalyptic cavewoman at a school for intelligent birds" part is novel, but the underlying structure adheres very closely to standard dating sims. It's got the childhood friend, the teacher romance, the rich spoiled guy, the quiet guy, the jock, the actually-nice bad boy, the actually-evil bad boy doctor who kills your classmates and feeds them to you... all the usual bits.

Yep, the main innovation basically amounts to crazy story idea. If I recall correctly, it's intentional. Part of the idea was to poke fun at some of the standard dating sim roles by filling them entirely with pigeons, but otherwise keeping the tropes exactly the same. Though, on the other hand, that's a surprising amount of effort to go to in order to make a joke about dating sims, so I'm sure it's since morphed into hey, dating "intelligent pigeons who can somehow take down full-sized humans with meat cleavers despite lacking opposable thumbs" is kind of fun on its own merits.

That's one way to think about it. ... Another is for Anthem to take the pressure OFF their sRPGs to be like anything else, and instead be what they want them to be. Also - we don't really know what Anthem will be like, aside from what was released. And if the game also has great story and other standard 'Biowary' thing that people like, then it being LIKE Anthem in that regard shouldn't really worry anyone.

I suspect DA4 will be safe, as it seems to already be in development and I doubt they would force it to change until after Anthem has proven itself, at which point it will probably be too late in development to totally redesign the premise around drop in coop, though they could theoretically have some additional coop features put in. I'm honestly more worried about what EA will do if Anthem bombs.

On the top of my head I can't think of a game that it wasn't derivative in some way in years. Nier:Automata? Undertale? Journey? LittleBigPlanet? Bayonetta? Katamari Damacy? BioShock? Papers, Please? Shadow of the Colossus? Unless you mean all Bioware games have been derivative, in which case I might say Jade Empire, but that's borderline I admit. While these are all great games, some are derivative in some way: Nier = Drakengard + Devil May Cry LBP = Minecraft, I guess? Bayonetta = Devil May Cry Bioshock = System Shock My point is that being derivative doesn't make it automatically bad.

It's not sudden. It started when the ME franchise was put on hiatus and Montreal was downsized. Between now and when Anthem ships, Bioware contributes no new revenue streams to EA, only incremental over existing games. Any revenue that would have come from MEA DLCs is down the toilet. That's never a good thing for a studio and that's a painfully long time to not be producing new revenue. I'm not saying it's a certain or imminent threat to the future of DA, but it sure didn't help. If Anthem also fails, I am going to be very, very worried about DA. Larger studios have been shutdown for less.

I'm fairly sure DA2 or ME3's ending was much bigger "not helping" moment. And Montreal was downsized... and many devs from Bioware were put in the same building as EA Motive to work on helping with polishing Battlefront 2. With so many of their folks having experience with Frostbite they can earn their checks by helping ship other titles EA is banking on. Also - while I can't predict what will be people's reaction to released Anthem, I think worrying about game that is scheduled to be released more than a year from now is just unhealthy. I'm fairly sure Bioware's folks know what's at stakes, so is EA and they're going to put extra effort there. So far, they've been successful in creating a lot of positive hype for the game and until they'll reveal more, let's tone done on worrying

Arguably, ME trilogy was more successful financially than DA, but I don't think DA was forced to be more like ME. If anything, it was the other way around.
