Pumpkins now off the vines. After this photo I gave the two biggest ones to my neighbors who has small kids so they would have some Halloween pumpkins. I put a basketball in the photo to show size reference. A photo of a few of my large potatoes, once again for size reference I put a softball in the photo.

Last night, for the first time, I ate potatoes that I grew. Smaller red ones, turned out good. I didn't take any before pics and you won't want the after ones.

Time to resurrect the thread! Did some metal detecting at a ditch at the side of the road on our property, and found a coin! It was badly corroded, but I recognized it as a one penny copper coin. I thought it was from the sixties or seventies, but once I had soaked it for a few weeks, I could see the text, and knew it was way older. ( Not the recommended way to clean coins, BTW. If you think you found something ancient, just rinse it and have it evaluated. ) As you can see, a very small coin, 15mm in diameter. But minted in 1913! That was a suprise for sure. I couldn't find an old enough map, but the road is visible in a map printed in 1930's. Oldest houses around here were built in the beginning of the 20th century, and the road used to lead to a marketplace couple of kilometers away, so the coin is not out of place at all. The NII monogram isn't visible. The corrosion is bad, suggesting the coin was in the ditch for a very long time. For the not history savvy: in 1913 Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland, under Russian rule. And some pictures from the garden: My wife planted some cornflowers. I didn't have the heart to mow all the fall dandelions, as the insects seemed to like them. Red dahlias have been particularly nice this year.

When it comes to the garden I am in an impasse of sorts...I bought the house in 2016 and started renovating (which included the garden area) but climate changes seem to throw themselves into the matter of things. I planted several fruit trees and tried to get the rest of the borders going as in having something in bloom all the time for the butterflies, bees, bumble bees and whatever else takes care of plant and insect business. I have several berry bushes which do have a lot of berries which the black bird is gathering . But somehow it feels like less butterflies and bumble bees are coming around this year. I know there has been a lot of rain but should I start worrying? I did see this one twice in my garden this year, just a pic from the internet since I did not had my phone handy myself: www.tuinadvies.nl/data/hoe_zeldzaam_is_een_kolibrievlinder_in_je_tuin_1658929679.jpgSightings like that do make it worth while to keep investing in my little patch of land for animals who might need whatever it provides.
