How about a gardening thread to share tips, tricks and pics? Anyone here interested in that sort of thing? I was unhappy with the vegetable quality and availability in my local grocery store so I started growing my own stuff a couple of years ago. Turns out its not difficult but actually a lot of fun and very rewarding. Now I'm growing potatoes (a lot), parsnips, tomatoes, salad, sugar beet, raspberries (tons), blueberries. I'm really proud about my exotic chilis though, some are very picky and hard to grow, but its so rewarding and hot food is totally awesome. I'm using the seeds to grow new plants, no need to buy them anymore! A small excerpt: Ghost pepper, extremely hot: Jalapeños: Habanero ''Big Sun '' They're really slow this year. I think the soil I'm using is not 100% ideal for them. African ''Namaqualand'' . Extremely tasty and kind of hard to cultivate around here. We're not in Kansas Africa anymore, planto. Tomatoes. More than I can eat this year. Your turn! What are you growing? (Cancer and frustration are not valid answers)

This has been a terrible year for my tomatoes, after three straight great years, for some reason the climate spawned a whole ton of pests. My potatoes are good, beets are small but tasty, very disappointed in my tomatoes though.

Some slugs and some kind of small bugs, not aphids but small like that. I refuse to use pesticides, I guess I need to find some king of good organic thing.

Sounds like spider mites, they're problematic. Are you using a greenhouse? Slugs are easy to deal with though, simply place sharp rocks or bent sharp sheet metal around your plants, the snails avoid sharp and pointy stuff so you blocked them access to your tomatoes.

I've become a lazy gardener the last few years and the weather always conspires against my weeding time table. My first few years in my house I had glorious veggie and flower gardens. My big chore right now is picking up pears, my pear tree has started to drop pears. Lots of them.

This was a terrible year for my tomatoes as well. Got these thorny little buggers that congregated in clumps, emitting a sticky substance that attracted ants...it was not cute. Forget its name at the moment.
I grow flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit, though not as actively in the past few years, due to drought (not to mention I got a bit discouraged when the drought killed all my blueberries). My climate is pretty forgiving for late season crops, so I currently have tomato and watermelon growing. My mint, rosemary, passion fruit and strawberries are doing well, but my lavender is not, due to spider mites. My corn seedlings failed to germinate (I think they were too old) so I'm hoping to plant some mature seedlings by the middle of next week. Carrots, parsnips, yams and potatoes are on the planting schedule as well (I'm very late this year, I know). I just love, love love cooking and baking in fall and winter, and nothing beats using your own home grown produce.
I also have a golden pothos that, unfortunately, appears to have root rot. I transplanted it into a bigger pot, but I guess I just soaked it way too much. I wanted the roots to establish, not to grow rotten. Seems like the only indoor plant I don't kill is snake plant.

I just love, love love cooking and baking in fall and winter, and nothing beats using your own home grown produce. I wholeheartedly agree. I love fall, and harvesting all the fruits is part of why its my favorite season. Also, if you have spider mites there is a cool trick that might work for you, those spider mites love dry climates. If you moisten the leaves regularly they will die. Theoretically. Besides that there are some natural predators but a spider mite infestation, especially if its the red ones, is very hard to battle successfully. Two years ago my entire sunberry plantation was destroyed by those little monsters and I tried everything I could to save the plants. Oh, and I can recommend Ladybugs. Those little bugs wreak absolute havoc on a lot of mites and other pests. In spring my chili were horribly infested with aphids...then the ladybugs came. The bugs and their larva exterminated the aphids in a matter of days. Those are real killers. I watched them pick up one aphid after another with their mouth pincers and suck them dry in a second. They did that all day long.

I do gardening just for fun. The point is to have something low maintenance and tasty stuff in my yard. So I have some berry bushes like strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries, apple and pear trees and so on. Also this summer I planted some carrots, salad and peas for kids to eat.

I didn't do a garden this year. I have a few tomato plants that aren't doing so well, but I kind of half-assed taking care of them. My elephant ears are doing awesome along side the house, but that is about it.

So I've had a garden of some form for most of my life. It's usually been a serious "This feeds the family" farm garden, and growing up entailed four huge fenced gardens and a green house. Lots of work, gorgeous plants. College, I helped out at the agriculture building. My first house (A dinky trailer with a garden plot), I grew tomatoes, spuds, lots and lots of cucumbers and kale, strawberries, the usual.
And now I'm living someplace remote, where I can't just ask my parents for some good dirt with lots of bunny beans for fertilizer. Besides the challenges of gardening in the Arctic (Well, at least the kale's happy), I've come to a depressing conclusion.
Commercially available soil that will ship is terrible. Like, I didn't realize growing plants was so hard, but my CUCUMBERS ARE NOT HAPPY. Gah.

We bought a new house 2 years ago so I am still getting the veggie garden established while trying at the same time to turn barren wasteland of a back garden into something worth looking at. It was awful, just a house in the middle of endless half dead grass, no trees, no plants... no nothing.
Current plan is tall hedging around the fence line to hide the ugly neighbours, with subtropical planting of various heights and wooden board walks and decks. The big main deck was built last christmas and the boarder Lily Pillies are in (sitting at about 5m now.. yay). Once we finish building my partner observatory at the bottom of the garden it will be onto the board walks and then I can finally get on with the actually planting something.

The last time I grew anything out of my own will was when I was very young, 8 or so.
I grew pumpkins, and I planted them near the cesspool so they would grow like crazy.
And they did. But I had trouble keeping the bugs off them. (The first one, my tithe, was killed by bugs. I had to give the second instead.)

I only know a handful of plants that could be cultivated in such harsh environment. Just about what you'd think -- tundra island. I've got a few semi-wild edibles that I encourage, and then hardy kale and strawberries in small raised beds outside. And my half-dead cucumbers and a very kindly aloe that doesn't even care about no sun for months because it's made of magic (Although it's in good dirt, unlike the poor cucumbers) hang out inside. I keep thinking I should be a bit more committed to indoor gardening, but space is kind of at a premium. Maybe next year I'll get a grow light, though part of me resents becoming a hobbyist gardener after growing up a farm kid. I've done a lot of harvesting wild plants this year to fill that void. Still, even the little aloe does wonders for my mood, and having it around for burns or a bit of a snack when needed is very helpful.

Trilobite DerbyI've been to Iceland a couple of times, sounds a lot like you're living in a very similar climate. The people there still grow tomatoes and cucumbers in little heated glass houses in their garden. So you totally can grow plants in such environment, its just a little more complicated though. (not that much IMO)

I would love to have a glass house in my garden, something similar to this It's on my to do list I already have the glasses for it, got them for free from a renovation site where they were rebuilding balconies.

This weekend is wine making weekend. More of my pears are dropping than I thought would drop by this time of the year so I have to get going on it.
I already have a good bunch of raspberries from this year frozen so I will be making Raspberry / Pear wine which turned out well last year.
I could just make a batch of pear wine as well but I'm going to go for another combo instead and try pear / banana wine as well. No guts no glory!

I would give you multi likes if I could Vella I've thought about putting the pear in bottle trick most years. One had to find just the right branch to try it on. I always chicken out or forget about it until the pears are too big.
