I used liquefied soap in a spray bottle against spider-mites and aphids once, it did not work at all for me. I sprayed the leaves of the plants nearly 5 times per day and the aphids didn't care at all. Neither did the spider mites. A handful of died simply because they drowned because I sprayed them so hard but the chemicals in the soap didn't do anything. Maybe it depends on the soap. *shrugs* For me the only thing that has worked every time was waiting for the ladybugs to come, they immediately go on a killing spree and completely exterminate any pest in a matter of days. Yes! My kids would bring those into the house and put them on the plants and we'd release them after a bit. I know that sounds weird, but they're ravenous little buggers. Have you ever seen a lady bug larvae? I'd always seen them in spring but never knew what they were until a few years ago. They're kind of ugly, I never would've associated them with ladybugs. Now I'm more careful when I see them. These people are living in your garden: Don't tread on them!

Hmf, slighty jealous of people here being able to plant winter crops. Like Vella said, the growing season here (close enough to arctic), is basically over. We got good crops of raspberries, as usual, both the normal red and also some bushes of yellow varieties. The secret for getting good crops from razzies every year, is to plant bushes at least on two different years. So when one bush rests more one year, the other will yield berries, and vice versa next year. Damned pheasants ate all our gooseberries! I've already named the male pheasant 'Lunch'. And my salads and kale didn't survive the bugs during the summer. Next year, I'm considering a small greenhouse. Vella, your pears look pretty similar to my grandpa's old apple-pear tree hybrid. Ours are round like apples, but have a distinct pear taste. Oh, and baked the first apple crumble of the year today from the apples that were left on the tree after really rough early-autumn storms. Hopefully the winter apples, ripe next month, will make up for the lost ones. Raspberries were so good this year, big and juicy and hardly any worms in them. Arktinen, I can't really remember wich cultivar it was but something that survives "IV-vyöhyke" maybe Olga? A rabbit ate my chocolate cherry tree last winter. It ended up as a delicious roast.

Do any of you have a problem with people going onto your property and taking your produce without permission? I don't know if there are some parts of the world where this is acceptable, but to me, it's theft. If I'm asked there's a 99.99% chance I'll say yes if I have enough crop, but the way I see it, you have to ask before you take something that doesn't belong to you and you didn't work for. This hasn't been much of a thing in the past few years due to the drought I mentioned earlier (though now and again unfamiliar people will take my oranges without asking), but I started thinking about this again since I'm essentially starting my garden over this year. No, since a) I don´t have anything remotely interesting to steal and fences are common in our country and people would have to climb over one which is definitely considered intrusion.

This year my parsnips are really big. I think I have to thank my cats for this success, they wiped out all the little annoying voles that used to eat my parsnips before harvest season. Thanks cats! They're really big, some weigh more than 2 kilos and are as big as a small head. And they're super tasty, so much better than whats commercial available.

I want Venus Flytraps all around my future permanent house. And cacti. Cacti cacti cacti.
I wanna greenhouse full of veggies though and a few fruit trees like peach, apple, and lemon. Just gotta make sure no squirrel attempts to fuck my tomatoes.

You should have put next to a matchbox Was it very hot variety? This weekend I was supposed to wrap up my garden for the winter. Didn't get to it though so I have to do it next week. My last pelargonias died this week due to frosty nights Bye bye pretties, see you next year!

You should have put next to a matchbox Was it very hot variety? Yes, VERY hot, in fact one of the hottest chili in the world - the Moruga Scorpion. I tried a slice and before I could even start to chew it was so blisteringly hot I nearly puked. Of course its not mean to be eaten like that, it actually has a wonderful fruity - almost sweet, like a red or yellow paprika- flavor and works especially well in south American recipes with beans and potatoes or burritos etc. This weekend I was supposed to wrap up my garden for the winter. Didn't get to it though so I have to do it next week. My last pelargonias died this week due to frosty nights Bye bye pretties, see you next year! Aw, sorry to hear about your flowers. Its getting cold really fast around here too, I've already performed an emergency evacuation and put my most fragile plants indoors. Do you cover your outdoor plants with fleece blankets to protect them from frost?

Most of my flovers, trees and berry bushes don't require covers during winter and the flowers I put in pots, like the pelargonia, would die anyway. What I could have done, is dig them up and take them indoors, and some summers I have especially if I've had some really pretty variety. Usually I just let them wither and buy new ones next summer. Biggest problem during winter is not actually the cold weather, but rabbits that eat everything. Last winter I lost my chocolate cherry tree and half of the raspberry bush. The rabbit lost it's life though

It's still a bit early for doing gardening stuff in my part of world. The seeds have arrived to grocery stores, and I've already bought a few bags because my kids wanted. Today I dug up all the seed bags I could find and checked the dates to see what to throw away and what to keep. I'll have to wait at least a month before sowing anything, though. *sigh*

I have tons of all sorts of seeds stashed away because when I go shopping for seeds I get greedy and completely overestimate the size of my garden - and the amount of free time I have. I'm not sure what I'm going to focus on this year (besides chili and potatoes of course). I may plant more beans and tomatoes, they have been fantastically high-yield last year, and that with very little maintenance and care. And I use tons of beans and tomatoes in my chili dishes.

I tried growing a garden last year. Mostly herbs, but also some tomatoes and peppers (No root vegetables. The soil here has so much clay a carrot would end up looking like an orange radish)
Cherry tomatoes turned out great. Was putting them in salads all summer. Unfortunately, animals got into the larger ones.
Bell peppers I don't think I watered enough. Only got a few and they were kinda small.
Serranos did EXTREMELY well. More than I knew what to do with, was giving the things away. Which surprised me, it's not very hot where I live.
Herbs did okay, basil, oregano, thyme, cilantro. The cilantro died early on, though. Maybe I overharvested it?
Anyway, was an interesting experience. Wonder if I should do it again.

We moved to our current home 3 years ago, and I am not going to bother trying to plant vegetables this year. First time since I was little I'll not be growing them. The yard is just too shady. There is a portion of the backyard that gets enough sun, but the husband pitches a tantrum every time I bring up building a few small beds in that area. "I'll have to mow around them!" Can't even grow sun-loving flowers. Hurts me a little.

Bell peppers I don't think I watered enough. Only got a few and they were kinda small. Be careful with watering peppers, just as with chili peppers its extremely easy to over-hydrate bell-peppers, then they show signs that can be easily misinterpreted as dehydration. A viscous cycle begins that ends with root rot that destroys the plant. Peppers need very little water.

Huh, and here I thought since the bell peppers didn't do so well, and the serranno did, I figured the conditions were overly dry.

Huh, and here I thought since the bell peppers didn't do so well, and the serranno did, I figured the conditions were overly dry. Grown pepper plants need like 2 x 1 cup of water on a hot summer day, depending on the fruit sizes of course. If the weather is cold and overcast and humidity goes up, be easy on the water, pepper roots are extremely sensitive to permanent moisture. Something they really don't like is permanently moist soil, all they want is to drink a glass of water and then dry up again. With certain chili pepper its even more extreme.

Problem:
Every year i grow Zuchinni in the same spot. They get big and i wind up using them to stuff Scallop Squash, make pies, soups etc.
This year they didn't ripen. Thinking at 12 inches in three days they might just need more sun i left them therr.
A week later my Zuchinni have turned to the same colour as a pumpkin they're slightly bigger than usual at about 12-14 inches length 3-6 across in a caveman club shape.
4 weeks later they are still ripening even after i cut them and left them on a table.
If anybody knows what this is i would be appreciative I don't actually trust eating them atm.

Last October I became the proud owner of my house. The house itself needed a lot of work (house built in 1945) and the garden is the project that is now still left to do.
Most trees and plants/bushes were so overgrown that I had to remove them/cut them down. Now I am looking into how to design the garden. What I want in there for sure are some low strain fruit trees, a Cherry and an apple tree.
Debating about some berrie bushes like raspberry.

The only mistake you can make with those plants is cutting them down too much. Otherwise, they're basically maintenance-free and very rewarding.

I had the variety u shouldnt cut to much, and moved them. Took me too much time to put them back in the soil (1 month of winter) THen there s 2 cuting style depending on the variety, but i forgot everything again. Anybody has a good tip for cochineal ? It s on a kumkuat tree i d rather not treat with pesticide
