I would give you multi likes if I could Vella I've thought about putting the pear in bottle trick most years. One had to find just the right branch to try it on. I always chicken out or forget about it until the pears are too big. I think I'll try next year, if there's any pears. I was a bit surprised how big my pears grew, because I'm practically on the survival limit of the pear trees here. Sweet tasting pear cultivars don't survive here so mine is some cultivar meant for jams and maybe ciders too? Well the growing season is pretty much over here. Next thing is assembling protecting fences for the fruit trees so that the rabbits wont eat them during winter.

Not many pear trees here in Edmonton, mine is the only one I know of thought I am sure there are others. This weekend I should probably dig up the back garden and get all my beets and potatoes out of the ground.

Phase one of the wine project done, pears gathered, cut and rended down in boiling water. A preferred way would be to just juice the pears but they have such a thick skin you need and industrial grade juicer, my regular one gets gummed up after a few pears. Now I just get a large soup kettle, put in about 4 inches of water and load it with quartered pears, then get out the old potato masher.

I think I finally killed the cursed raspberry after I relocated it for third time. Tomatoes went well this year. I missed few suckers here and there so I have jungle bush tomato now. Herbs went bit worse then last year, but still holding up. There is some kind of mysterious invisible insect infestation going on, which I blame on global warming and approaching apocalypse. I am most curious how will my birch tree project turn out. We planted it into ground two weeks ago and it´s still alive.

No matter what I do they still sprout out somewhere unwanted.

Nooooooo! You can't kill a raspberry plant! What do you call a small birch sapling? A son of birch! The leaves have all dried and fell off, but I am silently thinking it will grow new ones again. To elaborate a bit, the raspberry was huge failure from beginning. I wanted specific variety, but couldn´t find it anywhere but in one online shop. I finally snapped and ordered it, but it came in form of two bare sticks with barely any root system. It was already June and I had two sticks in ground. Then I discovered the raspberry in my local shop, sold as small, nicely grown bush. So I bought it and planted it next to sticks. Only to find out two months later they probably put wrong label on it, since it turned out to be blackberry.
It´s autumn and I still have two bare sticks in ground. I wonder what will spring bring....

Processed my beets the other night, did some quick pickling of some, just froze others. Dug up all my potatoes last eve, had a really good crop considering i did almost no weeding in the back garden this year, it was like a forest of weeds. Pulled all my tomatos as well a lot of them are not ripe yet, i'll have to put them on a towel in the basement at let them ripen. Both batches of wine are on the go, batch one raspberry, pear with a few blueberries added and pear banana with a few granny smith apples added. Both are fermenting along nicely, I have high hopes for the raspberry pear but the banana pear batch is still very dodgy.

Big day in the garden today. Planted sage, dill, parsley, cilantro, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, beets, corn, gaura, lobelia and portulaca. I'll start the potatoes, carrots and turnips next week. My gardener also replaced my tomatoes. They were not the variety I planted (I had rare seed so that can't be helped), but he did replace them. Accidents happen and to be fair he's actually an excellent gardener (and it wasn't him who killed my tomatoes but one of his employees).
I chose my Fall/Winter crops this year based on the Moosewood Cookbook. A Russian borscht I've been making for years is from that book, which I didn't realize until recently. There are a lot of exciting recipes in it I'm looking forward to trying.
Edit: I forgot I planted brussels sprouts too.

Hmf, slighty jealous of people here being able to plant winter crops. Like Vella said, the growing season here (close enough to arctic), is basically over. We got good crops of raspberries, as usual, both the normal red and also some bushes of yellow varieties. The secret for getting good crops from razzies every year, is to plant bushes at least on two different years. So when one bush rests more one year, the other will yield berries, and vice versa next year. Damned pheasants ate all our gooseberries! I've already named the male pheasant 'Lunch'. And my salads and kale didn't survive the bugs during the summer. Next year, I'm considering a small greenhouse. Vella, your pears look pretty similar to my grandpa's old apple-pear tree hybrid. Ours are round like apples, but have a distinct pear taste. Oh, and baked the first apple crumble of the year today from the apples that were left on the tree after really rough early-autumn storms. Hopefully the winter apples, ripe next month, will make up for the lost ones.

Some slugs and some kind of small bugs, not aphids but small like that. I refuse to use pesticides, I guess I need to find some king of good organic thing. I was once recommended to use water and a couple of teaspoonfuls of dishsoap(NOT dishwasher detergent/DISHSOAP) in a spray bottle to get rid of spidermites on my house plants, it seemed to work rather good, actually. Annnnd so ends my plant knowledge....no garden here....but I'd give gardening a shot if I could.

I used liquefied soap in a spray bottle against spider-mites and aphids once, it did not work at all for me. I sprayed the leaves of the plants nearly 5 times per day and the aphids didn't care at all. Neither did the spider mites. A handful of died simply because they drowned because I sprayed them so hard but the chemicals in the soap didn't do anything. Maybe it depends on the soap. *shrugs* For me the only thing that has worked every time was waiting for the ladybugs to come, they immediately go on a killing spree and completely exterminate any pest in a matter of days.

Yes! My kids would bring those into the house and put them on the plants and we'd release them after a bit. I know that sounds weird, but they're ravenous little buggers. Have you ever seen a lady bug larvae? I'd always seen them in spring but never knew what they were until a few years ago. They're kind of ugly, I never would've associated them with ladybugs. Now I'm more careful when I see them.

Do any of you have a problem with people going onto your property and taking your produce without permission? I don't know if there are some parts of the world where this is acceptable, but to me, it's theft. If I'm asked there's a 99.99% chance I'll say yes if I have enough crop, but the way I see it, you have to ask before you take something that doesn't belong to you and you didn't work for.
This hasn't been much of a thing in the past few years due to the drought I mentioned earlier (though now and again unfamiliar people will take my oranges without asking), but I started thinking about this again since I'm essentially starting my garden over this year.

Don't have a problem with that due to my remote location but that would irk me big time and see it the same way as you do. I'd never take fruits from a garden without asking the owner first. If you want to find out who stole from you plant a small patch of Paris quadrifolia, those who get carried out of their homes were the thieves....
