Alfonsedode, I copied this for you from the internet since my English is not that great The most basic techniques for cochineal scale control are mechanical. Attach a power nozzle to the end of a hose and submit the scales to a strong blast of water. You can also dip a toothbrush or any kind of brush with a long handle into a solution of dish soap or insecticidal soap for the purpose of scrubbing off the scales. Once soap is applied, hosing is no longer advised since it would wash off the soap. Still, you should continue to make water blasts and apply the soap at regular seven- to 10-day intervals in order to achieve reasonable control. In winter, spray with Neem oil, an organic product derived from a tropical tree. Release of mealybug destroyers, a species of lady beetle, is effective as a biological control technique. Mealybug destroyers, which resemble mealybugs in their larval stage, feast on mealybugs and scales, too. Locally, you can acquire mealybug destroyers from Rincon-Vitova Insectaries in Ventura. Other growers of beneficial insects can be located through the internet.

I love crocus and tulips. I planted tomatoes and golden berries (Physalis pruinosa?) about a week ago. It's terribly early since I can't get them out before mid-july because of possibility of night frost. They have already sprouted so they'll be big once it's summer.

I ll try soap and cleaning, always forgot you still can kill them by hand , but i m pretty unsure what power noozle on a hose is nor what kind of pressure it s supposed to give

@vella
I've always wanted to have a greenhouse but the aphid infestations scare me. Are you going to use ladybugs?

I've never had problems with aphids in the greenhouse. Maybe it's the climate? Roses are very susceptible to aphids but tomatoes and cucumbers seem to be very resistant in my experience. Paprikas may be another case, but I guess I'll find out that this summer. I've never used any kind of insect repellants, chemical or otherwise.

Still early here, If I am going to do gladiolas this year I should get them and plant them this weekend though. I need to rake the yard, do some pruing and I really want to repaint the fence this year and if i am going to do it, I need to do it soon before trees and shrubs start to leaf.

Paprikas may be another case, but I guess I'll find out that this summer. I've never used any kind of insect repellants, chemical or otherwise. I grow mint all over my garden including close to my tomatoes. Aphids have a number of natural enemies, and these insects are much better at controlling aphids than any other method available to gardeners. Pampering and nurturing their natural enemies is an excellent method of organic aphid control. Introduce beneficial bugs, like lacewings and ladybugs, to your garden as a natural way to kill aphids. Nearby plantings of mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, and dandelions will help attract these insects to your garden. www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/insects/homemade-aphid-control.htm

I've managed to finish the spring clean up round. First flowers just showed up, the blue edelweiss, and a few pushkinias, squills and one each of the snow drops and snow crocuses.
Once this snow/cold spell is gone I am gonna get serious about digging up raspberries I do not like, and moving the ones I do there, and digging up a sand-pit to limit their spread.
Just ordered a couple of gorgeous daylilies to replace all the regular lilies, because I lost the 5-year war on the red lily beetles and for my new flower bed. I just started converting my old vegetable bed into a flower bed too, so, yeah, it will be a big year for splitting and relocating plants to get the patterns to repeat but not look boring....
And, a couple more weeks, and I can plant gladioli and dahlias... aww, can't wait!

Well, I dunno if I killed the thread or what... but it's been cold here still, so I repotted my house plants, did an inventory of seeds and soaked peas of every kind.
Also, started the attempt # 3 at Canterbury Bells (cup and saucer). This time trying to start indoors... pretty sure they grow like weeds everywhere else on the planet! Wish me luck!

Hey, no, you didn´t kill the thread There is just not many gardeners I think. So to keep things going, I am gonna give you my seedlings today Mostly herbs and tomatoes and two violet peppers: This is squash. I always struggle with not enough light, so I am having these beautifully leggy things : And this is my most absurd project. Of Texas Mountain Laurel, which I made mistake when checking hardiness zones for, so it´s not that well suited for my country. But it was so hard to germinate and it´s taking so insanely long to grow that I don´t have the heart to throw it away. (this seed germinated in summer 2015, so this is how it looks like after almost two years)

I wish you all gardens with good insects FERDA MRAVENEC! Yes! Our TV cartoon channel had bought some Czechoslovak animated series and dubbed them, and we used to watch them in the 90s. Bolek and Lolek, and Pat & Mat are even more popular than Ferdy.

Unfortunately, I even manage to kill cacti. I'm good with animals, but plants... not so much. However, my father grows various kinds of chili peppers. We've also had physalis, tomatoes, eggplants and some other stuff. It's too cold here to grow most things, but I haven't given up on my avocado yet.

Is it hard to grow cilantro? Based on what I've read cilantro grows slowly from seeds and doesn't like to be watered too much. Never tried though. I was thinking about doing a small herb garden and was thinking to use those ready grown pots from grocery stores and just plant them to new bigger pots. Has anyone tried this?

I do that sometimes with basil. And as long as I repot it, it grows very much ok

I buy herbs in pots myself but plant them in the garden. So far it worked out very well. A laurel oak (hope that is the right translation) is what I want to plant as a new experiment.

Is it hard to grow cilantro? I drop seeds in the soil, and it grows... peculiarly, our northern prairie climate is not bad for many Mediterranean herbs, as it is arid, sunny and hot for long enough for them to grow over the short season. Soil is also naturally basic, lime rich, so I have pretty much everything save for basil that is a frigging princess. I keep that one inside in a pot. I really recommend Sage, thyme, oregano, garlic chives, parsley and regular chives as care free herbs interplanted between flowers or low berry shrubs. I also keep sorrel and spinach, so all together, it's a fresh salad in a few minutes of chopping all summer long.

I just bought all sorts of chili and pumpkin (edible) plants for whooping 60 bucks! I'm especially happy I could get my hands on ''Big Sun'' chili, they're rare and produce very large hot fruits. Almost the size of green paprika! Why do I buy chili plants? I have seeds but in order to grow them around here you need to start planting them in January and then you need artificial sunlight lamps, heaters.....its very demanding. I tried it once and oh boy.... only 4 out of 10 plants survived. Buying them when they're already 10 centimeters tall works great though.
