- Bloody Hell! 🤣 Italy sunk my whole navy. HoI4 of course, and not really, "just" my Mediterranean strike force. But that's bad enough. I exited the game in disgust without saving. If I ever start this game again with an earlier save game, I have to look into ways of reinforcing my Mediterranean navy. Otherwise, I had retaken command of my expedition force and started pushing into Germany. I thought things were going well, and my air forces and navy just got better and better. I thought I was steadily whittling away at Italy's fleet, sinking submarines, destroyers, convoys. I shot down so many aircraft over Malta that Italy stopped bombing. I was chasing Italian forces across North Africa. Surely I was doing well? ( Feels like playing Chess and thinking your position is strong, then suddenly losing the Queen.) Losing your navy ....bad Having Italy do it.....worse! Just my Mediterranean strike force, but that is essentially the Mediterranean fleet. I certainly can't recover from that in the game. (The fleet was completely wiped out - which doesn't feel terribly realistic? -, carriers, battleships, everything, only one destroyer survived.) The Italians, yeah, about that... HoI4 doesn't do anything in a consistent manner. It's certainly not a WW2 simulator. All of the major countries have the same material and competence. Italian and Japanese tanks kick as much ass as German or American, same with airplanes and ship technology. Just as if it was just a balanced board game of some kind. However, when it comes to number and age of units you start with, natural resources and industrial capacity, the game suddenly tries to mimic WW2. So, like playing Britain, I start with lots of natural resources from all the old Empire, a very large fleet of obsolete, old ships, but exhibiting a distinct lack of destroyers, an air force of biplanes, and not much soldiers beyond some skeleton colonial garrisons. And not terribly much of an industry either. Britain is a small country and the colonies have no factories or infrastructure. I did my best concerning the destroyer problem, but the Italian strike force showed up with 82 screen destroyers. I had 20-something in my Med strike fleet. Italy only has a fleet in the Mediterranean. As Britain, I have to have two fleets for Britain/Eastern Atlantic/North Sea/Baltic, a fleet for East Asia/Indian Ocean/Western Pacific, a fleet for West Atlantic/Caribbean, ...and a fleet for the Mediterranean.

HoI4: So, I eventually loaded a month earlier and tried again. The Mediterranean was a very chaotic struggle for a long time. I sent both my home strike forces to the Mediterranean as reinforcement, 6 BBs for a total of 8, Italy had 10. For some reason I did not understand, they had to go all the way around Africa and through Suez. Also, I lost most of my oil supply. Luckily, like the paranoid that I am, I had built a few extra reservoirs.
So I learned something new. Just as you cannot give an Admiral responsibility over things which are different, like open ocean and coastal waters, but have to have two Admirals and two fleets in the same region, you also need to have more generals. Particularly a general that do important, unique things like guarding Gibraltar, Malta and Cyprus. The Guy in North Africa, responsible for guarding the Mediterranean and Middle East colonies, had for some reason withdrawn all army forces from Gibraltar. Like Gibraltar is so safe, right? No need for troops. Only, as soon as Spain suddenly joined Italy, they had promptly marched in. 🫢
All fixed now, and I have whittled down the Italian and Spanish navies pretty good now. A good thing I had already sunk the German navy. I have oil supply again and am chasing all Italians out from all of Africa. Enough.
Looking good.

Lol My home fleet sunk a couple of rather big German convoys outside Britain's coast. - What the H** are the Germans doing there? Then it dawned on me that I don't have a single soldier defending the British isles. Maybe need fixing before a German convoy full of soldiers does make it past the navy.

The daughter of my sister sent me pictures of her two daughters, who won the second and third prize at a local dressage competition. That's awesome and I am very proud. Edit: I need to give more context, I think. Three years ago on this day, my sister died. So, it was very sweet of her daughter to send me those pictures today.

My ISP was bought many years ago by another company. They told me today that they now have a new hosting service, but that I can still use my old email addresses and my homepage. The latter I use for uploading images to the web. And very important ones too. What would we do without my FemShep sigpics.

HoI4: More thoughts: I have learned to manage navies in this playthrough. You have to, playing Britain. Before, I went out on internet and collected tip and info. But you always learn by yourself. Things I got told which were wrong: Put your strike fleets on "Always Engage". Nope, that's not a general good idea. It might not be a good idea ever. Even if you win, by possessing superiority, you'll have unnecessary losses. I did play the first part, at war with Germany, at the recommended settings and I lost 28 Destroyers, 2 Heavy Cruisers, 2 Light Cruisers. And Germany did not have a strong fleet. With same settings, I got wiped out when Italy went to war. I cheated and loaded a month earlier autosave. With coward settings, "Engage only at low risk", and "High repair priority", I comfortably whittled down the Italian navy. Took time and many engagements, but I only lost 2 Destroyers and one Heavy Cruiser. And Italy's navy was much stronger than Germany's (and mine, in the Mediterranean). "High repair priority' seem to mean that your ship disengages and seek to limp to base for repairs, when it has about 30-40% health left. "Medium repair priority" means it seeks repairs when it has only a hardly visible sliver of health left. "Low repair priority" means it won't reach port before sinking. Upgrade old ships or not, has been settled, I think. Only way you're going to have a large enough fleet to prevail as Britain, on five seas, is to use the old ships and also make them survive (also thus coward settings). Perspective, started with 124 Destroyers, lost 30 of them during the early years. It has taken me 13 years to build 137 new Destroyers (I'm at start of 1949). And I still lack Destroyers. I need some 20-30 more. Survival of the fleet is crucial to dominate and continue to dominate. But I've done that well. Except for a brief period when my oil supply was cut off (don't know exactly where but probably Gibraltar), I kept my convoys and supplies safe. And cut off everybody else. I must have sunk something like 20,000 convoys. There's another big justification for spending shipyard time at upgrading old ships: Steel. Between my ship building and tank production, I did not have enough steel to keep all yards at building ships. Despite buying hundreds of steel units from USA for as most something like 30 civilian factories. A crippling cost. So Rule Brittania, Brittania Rules the Waves. Now the land war, otoh... I have about 2 million casualties and have lost something like 20,000 light tanks, against Germany. And by 1949, the frontlines are pretty unmovable. Not getting anywhere. ...But I think I know a couple of things that went off wrong. Against Germany, I should have ramped up to Medium tanks much earlier. Now I got caught on the wrong footing, never making up losses.

I was on a bus today. Our public transport is great, BTW. At a stop a police officer on a bicycle asked the driver if he found a phone. Indeed he did. Apparently a passenger left it on the bus and only noticed it after leaving the bus and asked two police officers advice. So one officer chased the bus. Ghehe. The other stayed with the owner. The driver said that if the other officer phoned that phone, he would give it back. And sure enough the phone rang. What I like about this story, is that the officer took the time to solve an ordinary problem and I told that officer that, because you don't often see the human side of the police. Then there is the Amsterdam dark humor kicking in. I told the driver: "That's a super cop." To which the driver responded with "We bury that one in a nicer spot."

HoI4: Finally cracked the Germans. But screwed up at the "negotiations" afterwards. I was the biggest scorer and had the most point-capital, but France and Soviet greedily annexed everything, while I tried to liberate Finland, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Argentina,.. France, the traitors, didn't even give me access to ports to ship my troops home. Luckily, I had territory in south of Spain and I just had to have all my 72 divisions, cutoff from supplies, travel all the way down there. There will probably be another war. Against Soviet.

HoI4: My modern building program: After 11 battleships, 10 carriers, 12 very heavy cruisers, I've run out of ship names. Most typical Royal Navy names are already taken by my old ships, so I had to be creative, 'Queen Jane Gray', 'Robert the Bruce', 'King Richard III' etc. Also got in some old ship names, 'Temeraire', 'Mary Rose', 'Swiftsure', etc. But now my mind is starting to get blank. 'Grenville' was taken, but maybe not 'Richard Grenville'? Then there's his father too, 'Roger Grenville', but he didn't sink half the Spanish navy, so doesn't rate a Carrier or Battleship. 🤔

Had an excellent little evening hike just now. Normally I hike early to mid morning with longer hikes lasting to maybe early afternoon. Had an appointment this morning so I decided to do a rare evening hike. (It is still just about the longest days of the year here, sunset at about 10:08 pm) So on this hike I saw: A giant Beaver working on a dam on the creek. Several sets of ducks with ducklings (just out of nesting season for ducks here.) At one bridge I saw a coyote, then to my amazement a white tail doe came out and was chasing the coyote. After bit two more coyotes came along, looked like a mother and two younger ones just out of being pups. The younger coyotes took notice of a mother duck and ducklings near-by and I thought for sure the coyotes were going to make a meal of them. However the deer came out again and chased the coyotes again, I'm thinking the mother deer had a fawn nearby. All in all a very eventful one hour hike.

I don't want to go into details, but two days ago I started a complaint against a health care organization, using an official method, recommended by Dutch law. I said that I didn't want excuses, but procedural changes instead, which would not only benefit me, but others in my situation too. To my surprise they took this very serious and today 3 people of that organization showed up and admitted it was their fault. They said they would update procedures and evaluate those with me after a month.
Let's see how it goes. I feel better now and less anxious. I never expected they were that fast.

@ MadIce, hope everything is ok with you. HoI4: One thing that often happens as you try to play this orgy in micromanagement, is that you run into puzzling things which give rise to questions: " Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? What is it I don't understand? " Sometimes, you learn something new. Sometimes the mystery continues. Right now, my UK is being angered by communist France' and Soviet Union's foul assault on China. But I cannot declare war, because I have no Casus Belli. I can send volunteers, and I guess 13 modern, overloaded tank divisions should normally do something about the situation. But the terrain is hopeless and distances and logistics a nightmare. I don't want to put my soldiers through that, so far from home. I would want my navy and strategic jet bombers to do some work. I'm sending Lend Lease, just like USA, and here's the mystery. Only about 50% of my LL comes through, and about 30% of USAs LL. The rest is sunk at sea. I have also gifted 300 convoy ships, and they're mostly gone as well. Okay, okay, but why, how? Because 100.00% of Mexico's Lend Lease comes through!? What is it that Mexico do right? They have no territory with land borders to China. I do though. I have Hong Kong. Why can't I just deliver from HK? France can't sink my ships because we're not in war. Maybe I should just retire this game now? That's an odd situation. Normally, 😑 I eventually can't load the save game because of a new patch.

HoI4: So in the meantime, I started to pay interest to the specs of my UK navy. I've looked at those numbers before, of course, but not really comprehensively and together. But now I used pen and paper and took notes. And discovered something worrisome. I have 24 Battleship, but 10 of those seemed pretty weak. The 10 oldest, 5 Queen Elisabeth Class and 5 "R-Class". I've upgraded them, of course, in steps, so they all have the most modern radar, fire control and anti-air, but they're very slow and don't pack much of a punch, actually, they're weaker than my most modern cruisers. What to do? Upgrading engine and main guns is not really worthwhile, but my fleets and Strike groups need those 10 Battleships, and building 10 new takes years and needs mountains of steel that I don't have. Not feasible. So I started to experiment with the configuration, and discovered that the time it takes, is not dependent upon the added cost to the ship, but how many and big changes are made. So unfortunately, the ideal, upgraded R-class and Elisabeth class are not practical to aim for, no matter how neat and good value they seemed. Instead of equipping better guns, I must add another gun turret, and sacrifice either some anti-air or the aircraft facilities to make space. And then spiff up the boilers a notch. That only takes 8-9 months for 5 shipyards, ...per ship. That's bad but reasonable. These old ships did very well before, but now we're in the 50's and I have to think that when I face the French navy, they will bring some modern ships. So I need to put these on some steroids. So I did it. All 10 at the same time. 50 shipyards out of my 107, for almost 9 months, and suspending most of my Destroyer building programs. For 75% more firepower and 20% more speed.

I took a 'city walk' today instead of a hiking trail hike (mainly becasue the mosquitos have been just nasty the last two hikes.) I don't live too far from one of the trendy parts of town (About a mile) so I walked there and to my surprise the annual 'Art Walk' festival was on. Each year at that location they close down some streets and the area is filled with artists, jewelers, clothes makers all with booths displaying and selling their wares. I had not brought my wallet with me so I was not going to buy anything but it was like a giant art gallery with all sorts of different styles, just great, lots of talent. The other good news is they had a food truck selling mini donuts. So of course.....

I also had a good walk today. I think part of why it felt so good was that I did it earlier than I usually manage to get away.
Then I also spent 1½ hour watching a conversation between Jordan B Peterson, Jim Caviezel and Tim Ballard. Very good stuff. Context was the movie 'The Sound of Freedom'. A must see, I'm quite sure. A 10/10, people are saying. ...Not the usual scum, of course, on the contrary they try to do anything to cancel it.
Also discovered that Civ V doesn't work any longer on my laptop. Annoying. On my W10 desktop I got an error message and some additional Microsoft stuff was downloaded and everything was okay. On my Win11 desktop, nothing, just failure to launch. I guess I'll eventually uninstall it and re-install it and see if that helps.

Good so far. Went walking all over the city. Got some new shoes, hit up a thrift store and got some pants/shorts/shirt for cheap too. My feet aren't happy from doing all that walking in my old shoes and one of my toes decided to turn purple in protest but I'm the boss. Felt nice to walk for a few hours, breezy sunny day today, great for it. I have not been anything approaching my best self in the last few years but I got a bit of flattery rambling about too. A few young women offered some spectacularly nice smiles and one rather flirty girl ventured so far as to sit next to me at a booth after I let her go ahead of me at the burger-joint. Shame they have terrible taste in men.

Shame they have terrible taste in men. They always go for the jerks! As for my day, I was completely out of my mind because I could not find my cat - she did not come home for lunch like she always does and also did not react to my calls which is also super unusual. As the hours passed I got really worried. I suspected she jumped into the delivery truck which brought me some parcels in the morning because she is extremely curious even for cat standards. I looked for her everywhere for hours, in the woods, behind the bushes, in the fields - I even called the truck driver and asked him to search his truck for my cat. Even my two other cats sensed that something was not right and started to run around getting all stressed out. (I think they mimicked my behavior) I already imagined her alone and lost in some warehouse far away from home. 3 HOURS later she just popped up out of nowhere with a fat mouse in her mouth and she was like '' hey what's up''.- First I felt like whopping her ass but I felt so happy and relieved to see her again that I gave her lots of food and cuddles instead. Cats. I should have known better.

So yesterday I for some reason bought Soulcalibur VI on Steam's summer sale. I keep pretending I'm going to quit these Japanese fighting games, that it was a thing I was into when younger. That it's all about brainy strategy and manager games these days. And indeed, I do no longer have every generation of every fighting game, and I do not have any console newer than PS3 and XBox360. So I did stop there in some sense. ...But then these games emerged for PC on Steam. And eventually they were also on sale at a tempting price. And I just kinda had to "take a look", you know. So the last Soulcalibur I had was IV. I never got V, because I thought they had removed too much from the IV game in terms of gameplay. They might have corrected that with dlc later, that is apparently how these franchises are milked now, but I wouldn't know. And strangely It was like riding a bike. I was just right back in it. My head didn't remember the moves, but my spinal column/muscle memory did. So suddenly Steam claims I've played it for 10 hours already. - Oh well.
