I cant really do much work, over 50% of my customers are staying at home and my suppliers are really out of capacity from all the missing staff. Also messes with shipping dates of wares. This starts to get annoying. Gonna leave early and go grocery shopping. Can't hurt to have some more food at home.

A bit frustrated now. Getting really sick of the overreacting to this virus... just learned that if I dare sniffle at the wrong time or someone sees me after I take the stairs and am a bit out of breath I could be forced out of work for at least 2 weeks. Fucking hell people, this isn't the black god damned plague.

Fucking hell people, this isn't the black god damned plague. Well, I'd prefer the plague as it is easily treatable today, a virus isn't. I'm not sure about the overreacting. First people said everyone was overreacting since the virus would never make it out of China. Then when the Virus reached Europe in no time at all people said everyone was overreacting because its not worse than the common flu. When it was confirmed that the virus was 20-30 times deadlier and MUCH more contagious than the common flu people said everyone was overreacting since the health system could handle it. Now that hospitals in Italy are OVERWHELMED by all the critical cases so they are forced to choose whom to help and whom they leave to die since they are totally out of capacity people say everyone is overreacting because it will soon be over. Now that deaths by the virus double each day, people say everyone was overreacting since the governments of the most affected countries are prepared for cases such as this. Now after the government admitted that they only have lung ventilation systems for only a FRACTION of the cases - and every severe case, which is 20% of the cases need those-, and they estimated that 60-70% of all people will contract it, people say everyone is overreacting still. Also, the economy will plummet dramatically from this, that's an absolute certainty. I dunno, but those who have switched to home office work and bought some supplies look quite sensible to me now.

If you actually look at the numbers, while more dangerous than the flu, it is nowhere near as destructive or fatal as the media is painting it and places are treating it. Most of the fatal cases are also above 70 years of age. Once you get below 60, the death rate plummets and we still only hit a 4 percent death rate of a virus with a small sample size. But the media has latched onto a ratings goldmine and they will not let up anytime soon sadly. My work response literally said if you have the sniffles you will go home and you cannot come back until the sniffles stop for more than 24 hours without any medication............ the sniffles, in fucking allergy season. There is a reasonable response to this (hint, wash your hands, don't touch your face, if you get sick stay home) and then there are reactions bordering on sheer paranoia.

But the media has latched onto a ratings goldmine and they will not let up anytime soon sadly. Yes, the majority is but ONE THIRD of the severe cases in Italian hospitals are YOUNGER THAN 65!!!
Unless we all don't care about our parents and grandparents, this is a serious situation for a significant portion of the population. Surely, nobody wants to die as young as 60? I'm quite worried about my mom who is a heart attack survivor, age 65. I'm worried about my best friend's parents, her grandmother. Most of my neighbors are elderly and I quite like some of them.
If half of them die, that's still awful.
And let's not forget other risk factors besides age that apply to a troubling number of people in the western world: heart issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity. One of these probably applies to 50% of the US and European population. Enjoy having no empathy with any of them. And let's hope you don't suffer complications for unknown reasons (which is always a possibility) when all ICU beds are full.
It's not the end of the world, far from, but it's still a dangerous situation for some people.

What do the colors in that chart mean? They each represent a continent, more or less. The Americas appear to be grouped together.

The problem with our ICU beds in Germany is that 80% of them are already occupied by flu patients and for other reasons, it seems!
So being number 2 on that list might be misleading... I worry that we'll have a similar situation as the Italian hospitals soon. A couple of weeks and they already have to let some people die. :/

4 % death rate would be absolutely disastrous, so there's no reason to take comfort from any reasoning like yours. It will mean, for instance, that you know a number of people who will die from this. Based on a billion cases, it means 40 million dead, if you have trouble with the math? More alarmingly, the fatality is, globally, right now, 7.22 % !!! Calculated the only way it can be calculated, comparing deaths to survivors. And that, I'm sorry to say, does put it into the 'Black Death' category and means that it's considerably more serious "than media is painting it". ...But then again, we had the clues from early on, didn't we? Why would China lock down entire, huge cities with military, if this was just another flu epidemic? If you must paint it in more positive light, which I would urge NOT to do - since any laxness will result in exponentially worse outcome - you can choose to assume that there is a bigger, "dark" number of cases and survivors, and that the mortality thus is lower. I wouldn't put much trust in that though. Also, we know that viruses tend to mutate into less dangerous varieties over time. This is because the less aggressive forms will spread easier, not incapacitating their victims as much. I wouldn't trust that so much either - not in the short run -, because this particular virus seems to be highly contagious over a long time period. There are also reasons to expect mortality to increase. Because society and health care will break down. Very strong measure early, is the only way to get a handle on this. If that is successful, there will be a number of pundits who will take the outcome as proof of that it was "unnecessary". We just have to live with that.

My state is slowly preparing for a general curfew, in one state people are already confined to their homes, and all stores but grocery shops and drug stores are closed, all borders are closed as well. Also, I just learned that I wont have to go to work tomorrow. This is such a weird situation, a couple weeks ago the government said none of this would ever become necessary.......

Germany will have to follow and do lockdowns as well... Why are we STILL dragging behind?! The death toll in Italy makes your head spin. Korea has a handle on it. Europe is drowning right now, as expected.
I'm going to work tomorrow with mild cold symptoms (runny nose, so not corona), hoping to hear the news that we'll get sent home. So far they've only tested home office for the more important people. We in the open office space will continue to breathe the possibly contaminated air from the piss poor AC that keeps making us ill year round already. Half the office is coughing at any given moment.
If not, I took unpaid leave the week after (requested before this virus thing hit because most of us are idling waiting for projects anyway). Then I need to be back for a week for some scheduled work I can't skip and then I have 3 more weeks off anyway when Europe starts drowning big time in this shit. Yaaaay!
My best friend is one of the unlucky ones whose kindergarten is one of only two that will continue to operate as emergency daycares in town. She is SO Happy about it....
Now I need to convince my mom to stay at home and maybe use this to finally accept retirement. My chances of that are slim. She still consideres getting her hair dyed vitally important even though she's so scared she has panic attacks, lol. I have a feeling the hairdresser will close soon too. Which is perfect because showing herself in public with gray hair is unthinkable to her. Problem solved then, I guess!
People are so illogical...
