Germany will have to follow and do lockdowns as well... Why are we STILL dragging behind?! The death toll in Italy makes your head spin. Korea has a handle on it. Europe is drowning right now, as expected. People are so illogical... Germany and especially Switzerland not giving much of a damn is just puzzling. I have friends in Germany and nobody really seems to care much. Whats going on... Even our chancellor said that Germany must wake up before its too late.

My guess is that our German superiority complex is to blame for acting so slowly. We keep telling ourselves we have amazing health care here so nothing can happen to us. OR they do know we're fucked and there's little we can do and they're downplaying it so that people don't lose their shit. The way some people cry about getting robbed of their precious freedom for a harmless flu bug drives home how little some people care about their fellow citizens. And how many people are still unconcerned because they think they're not at risk personally. This is going to get ugly in Europe. We lack the kind of collective thinking Asians have. For them it's common sense to self quarantine and do whatever they can to migrate the spread. Here people are more selfish and our democratic process too slow for such a fast spreading threat.

I quit my job today (by phone call, even). Well, maybe not completely. I'll be back for a couple of things, eventually, but yeah, mainly. Many years (has it become now) ago I started to write seriously (fiction). I quite enjoyed it. Two years ago I realized that I'd rather write than doing anything else, and I was frustrated by my ordinary work taking so much time away from me. I also realized I wouldn't be taking any risk. I'm set for life, so I can totally afford to fail and be laughed out from agents and publishers. But I didn't want to quit right away. I was involved in projects at work, which I wanted to see to their ends. And also, I was kinda "irreplaceable" , and felt some sort of responsibility and loyalty towards my employer. But I notified my employer and we set off on the journey towards this day. The irony is that knowing I would quit and start writing, meant that I practically stopped writing at all during these two years. I don't think that matters much, as things have continued to move about in my head. This day didn't come quite the way I figured. The reason is of course the threat from the Corona virus. I can't sit at restaurants in the sun and enjoy life. Instead, I, as everybody else, have to isolate myself and my close ones as much as possible. Truth be told, I wasn't going to quit quite right now, but the Corona virus made me push forward the date, to reduce the risk of exposure for myself. I can't say I'm feeling good. There are the dark clouds of this threat hanging over our future. Hopefully we'll all come out in the sun again some day. But I honestly think this is going to be quite bad.

First, congratulations on your new journey, even if it seems like it might be off to a rough start, perhaps there's some inspiration in the circumstances that you could draw upon to write? I'm not 100% committed to finish any of the three different works I have in progress - I might do something else, because I've steadily become better at this -, but my rather conventional 'hexagecimalogy'-brick-volumes Fantasy epic, definitely had a devastating plague planned for for the 1000-page volume 2 (which has been pushed off towards volume 3 or 4, by volume 1 grotesquely swelling from the normal Fantasy-author-diarrhea.) I'll give this project a serious look, but it requires much rewriting and I might not enjoy that. Also, it looks like a project I'll do until death, and I don't really want to go that Robert Jordan route. This story doesn't mean that much to me. ...Not yet. We'll see.

Ugly in Europe? Imagine the USA, with all your issues plus one of our political factions doesn't believe in science or the media. Oh for sure. :/ The States will get hit harder than Europe probably. But I imagine Europe will get hit harder than we think regardless. Any advantage we have in Germany in terms of ICU beds we're probably pissing away by dragging our feet longer than the others. Ugh. I had to scare the shit out of my mom tonight about what's going on in Italy where anybody 60+ isn't getting ventilators anymore, to finally make her understand how serious this is for her. She's a tax consultant, used to be self-employed, now works part-time 20 hours a week for a small firm. Had another client over right when I arrived to have a talk with her. I made her cancel ALL her appointments for a month. Told her to stay away from the office. No more grocery shopping (I'll do it). No social gatherings. Stay put, only walk the dog or work in the yard. That's it. Sorry mom, you're in the risk group twofold! Meanwhile I seem to have caught a cold. At least I think it's just the cold. I'm coughing but no fever. Runny nose. Doesn't feel different from any other cold I've had, I'm prone to developing a cough... Made a few of my coworkers nervous today by coughing frequently. Will call in sick for the rest of the week. I wish I could get tested but no chance. I'm getting paranoid about getting it at work and passing it on to my mom, I see her every day because of the dog. We'll be working reduced hours in the office starting tommorow. And those who are in between projects can stay home. Home office for those who can do it, I can't. But reduced hours with full pay is very fair. Half of my coworkers were gone today already because they have kids to watch or called in sick. This is surreal...

If I were you I would not see her at all - it might hurt, but it sounds like you just put her in grave danger every time you go meet her. Just call her- Thankfully, I don't have to do grocery shopping as I'm living in a rural area and the grocery store does deliveries.....for now. I pay via online banking and the guy drops the food crate 3 meters in front of my doorstep. I only have to disinfect and decontaminate the groceries, that's important. If I need to do some actual shopping or go any place with lots of people I will definitely only do it with my full NBC mask.

My ambulance service is taking a few precautions -- more sanitizing, all the good stuff.
But I will say, based on what I've heard from our medical director, a lot of people are over-reacting. And a lot of people are under-reacting. It's nasty and you don't want it to get the elderly or infirm... But it's probably not going to take out society. I'm going to be very careful myself, since my job is public facing -- brewer for a small health food grocery/pharmacy -- and our department can't afford to have any of its EMTs in quarantine. Volunteer services just don't have the people.

Today I left home to fetch some meds from my doc and to refuel my car. (Only way to break curfew is to get medications and to go get groceries) It was really crazy, like the end of the world. The whole time I only saw one other car, the streets were completely empty, no people anywhere, all shops closed, it was silent like never before. No engines, no sounds of machines, no music, nothing. And as if that wasn't enough the weather amplified the apocalyptic situation by a slight drizzle with absolute zero wind and with clouds painted yellow-orange by the setting sun. It all felt so strange, not bad, just....different. Strangely peaceful yet eerie at the same time. Also the last couple of days I have not met anyone nor talked to anybody. Or even seen any other person from a distance closer than maybe 10 meters-. That feels kind of strange too. Hard to imagine that might become a normal situation for maybe many weeks if not months to come. Eh, I don't like that much.

It all felt so strange, not bad, just....different. Strangely peaceful yet eerie at the same time. On my way to work this morning I was thinking that at least that part of my day was still normal. There isn't much traffic since I go in so early. But as I was looking at the steam stacks and which way they were blowing, one drifted east and another maybe a couple miles away at most was drifting west. From my vantage they were exact opposite directions. Ones in the middle were going straight up. Wind is apparently going mad along with the everything else.
I haven't personally been to a store in the past week or so but my coworkers who have say the shelves are bare. It's so crazy. I'm lucky though, in that I don't normally hang out with people other than at work, so not hanging out with people isn't a negative for me. I'd much rather be home reading a book than out trying to be social.

As I was imbibing some liquid therapy today (several cans of Guinness, for strictly medicinal reasons i.e. chilling the f out to lower my critical stress levels) I was in a gaming frame of mind thinking that we're all Quarians now living in a Fallout world were toilet paper is the new currency not bottlecaps.

They just announced that Germany will not take any further measures and that they wont do a curfew. Germany is sitting in a house on fire and they don't even realize it. They WILL have to do lockdowns and curfews because people here don't seem to care indeed. The weather is beautiful and EVERYBODY is outside enjoying it. There are kids and parents everywhere and they're all GATHERING. They're standing around in groups talking and laughing. Teenagers sit in the grass having fun. Corona panic, my ass! People are just worried about running out of pasta and toilet paper. They're not worried about the virus, it seems. Nobody seems to get why schools were shut down! Closures are pointless this way. In fact, kids might actually be spreading the virus fatser now because they're not locked up in school but roaming the streets like it's summer break! I'm going to be so mad about a curfew though because after months of dismal weather I'm finally enjoying walking the dog. And being outdoors by yourself should be fine. You're not going to get infected walking past another person once in a while. But that's not what people are doing. They're socializing as if they don't have a care in the world. I live in a small town. Not super rural but lots of fields and forest trails. Lots of old people here who are ALSO all buzzing about outside but they're not mingling so much at least.

I live in a small town. Not super rural but lots of fields and forest trails. Lots of old people here who are ALSO all buzzing about outside but they're not mingling so much at least. I went for a run last night, and there were lots of people out but they were not gathering. I ran through a neighborhood full of houses, and there were people walking their dogs (looked mostly like couples or individuals) and they tended to stay away from others. Quite a few other people out running as well, and it seemed like people were more likely to... cross to the other side of the road to keep away from one another. The weather was great with a clear sky and the start of a nice sunset forming. Most other people I saw outside were keeping to their front porch, maybe talking with their neighbor but from the distance of one front yard to the next, keeping that ~10m separation going. I don't know if that's true everywhere, but I didn't see any people gathering in my immediate area. I suppose it could be some cultural differences between a more populated metro area (~200k in ~65km²) vs a smaller town. Our county did send out information both electronically and by snail-mail reminding residents that they should actually spend some time outdoors, but when coming across other people they should practice "social distancing" (maintain 2m separation) and not gather. Good luck Kappa Neko

I luckily get to work from home, my primary hobby is gaming so I don't mind staying inside (but if I want to go out, I still can), and people around here are still sensible with barely a fricking panic hoarder in sight. As long as those (and any infected) won't migrate here from elsewhere, we can probably ride this out.

And me working in a supermarket. Well, I suppose it's job security I've been looking at people who are working in these essential but often underappreciated jobs and saying things things like, "Thank you for all that you do." when I go out. Sometimes it take a little hardship to make one not take others for granted.

Well, I'd rather see people taking the panedemic a bit too seriously than not enough. I'm thankful it's not killing children and I'm thankful some people will only experience mild symptoms. But Covid-19 is roughly 10 time more deadly than the average seasonal flu and we can't ignore that. I probably should be more worried about myself since I'm older, but after surviving stage 3 breast cancer, not a whole lot scares me. I take every CDC reccomended precaution seriously and act accordingly. My neighbors are doing the same. Anchorage restaurants are on delivery only status and our stores have some shortages, but not too bad compared to some places. I ordered TP last week from Amazon.com. We have drive-by Covid-19 test sample collection started but I'm hoping those swabs will be able to be tested in a timely manner. It looks like we're up a few more cases today: State announces 3 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing Alaska total to 9 so farwww.adn.com/alaska-news/2020/03/19/state-announces-3-new-confirmed-cases-of-covid-19-bringing-alaska-total-to-9-so-far/Drive-thru COVID-19 testing underway in Anchoragewww.alaskapublic.org/2020/03/17/drive-thru-covid-19-testing-underway-in-anchorage/As far as the economic impact in our state goes, I'm especially worried about southeastern Alaska. It was bad enough that our idiot governor screwed around with the state ferry system, but now they face a reduction in their normal cruise season tourist trade. I hope they have a good fishing season, but cannery labor is probably going to be impacted too. One more thing. Trivial but no fun. It sucked to have all the bars closed on St. Patrick's Day! Update. This just in: Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall will temporarily close doors to help curb spread of coronavirus www.adn.com/alaska-news/anchorage/2020/03/19/anchorage-5th-avenue-mall-will-temporarily-close-doors-to-help-curb-spread-of-coronavirus/
