I survived the grocery store. Lots of bare shelves but I was able to get almost everything on my list, so can't complain too much. TP aisle was completely empty though. Luckily I bought some a couple weeks ago before the world went nuts.

Yeah there is a kind of selfish it's only old people I'll be ok, so I'll do what I want, bury my head in the sand and continue as normal or as we say in the UK "I'm all right jack" attitude. It's the typical "me" demographic of modern societies.
So to hell with the sick, the old and the disabled, don't you dare inconvenience me It's not just the old and people who actually contract the disease, the disruption will effect many people in different and serious ways. I can use myself as example, I have epilepsy and I dread to think what will happen if I run out of anticonvulsant meds.
Oh just an observation on the "Flu is worse" people. This is usually said by people who don't actually get the Flu. The Flu is a serious and really unpleasant exhausting infection, the last time I had it, it took me almost a month to get back to normal. Most of the people that say they get the flu every year are really describing the common cold, people do love to exaggerate. They won't be so cocky if the virus infects enough of the population to eventually mutate, and become deadly to younger people, that's probably what the authorities fear the most.

Well, this I didn't need. My cat just came in, and it looks like he's broken his ankle somehow. C'mon, kitty; if you're going to do that, do it after the virus panic.

Aww hope your kitty is ok!
All the panic buyers are still here in full force, here's a good example for you -
A girl I work with, her father went to the butcher to buy mince. Nothing fancy, just plain old minced beef. The woman in front of him tried to order 40kg of mince. Let's also take note that prices have also doubled up to $24.99 per kg at most places in my area at least because you still can't buy anything anywhere here. Her excuse was that she had a "large family". You can all work out the logic of the mathematics she used to calculate that figure.
If any of you feel like you're running low on supercharged morons, let me know and I'll send some over for you 😂, there's plenty of them here for everyone!

I don't know, if the virus gets really bad, and it most likely will, food supply may dwindle into a trickle. If she can freeze that 40kg I can understand her. A few weeks ago people called those who bought protective masks morons, and a few weeks before people called those who said that the virus would spread beyond china and kill thousands morons - I would not be so quick to judge anymore.

Unless she is throwing a very large party, where on earth was she planning on keeping it?
We do have large amounts of food. We have a 25 lb. sack of rice, for example. But I eat rice quite regularly and it does not go bad as long as it is kept cool and dry. We also have a variety of canned goods, that we also eat. Bulk buying fresh food without a specific purpose in mind is just mad.

A friend of mine hunts, he has a freezer big enough to put the meat of 3 deer in it. Compared to that 40kg is nothing. I think a global health crisis that is most likely followed by an economic crisis of yet unknown but probably severe magnitude is a legit purpose for storing some food. In fact, its quite a sensible idea to have a food stock to last a couple weeks, if not ideally 2-3 months. Nobody saw this crisis coming, but a total power grid failure is expected to happen within the next 10 years and even our government and military suggested civilians to have a food storage to last at least a month.

I'm sorry, but I think 40kg at one time, when no one can get it is a little selfish. I'm pretty sure she's be mad if the person in front of her did the same and ordered it all before she could get anything. I've got no problem with her wanting that volume, but it should have been spread over multiple days so others have a chance to purchase food too. Currently now here there is a maximum purchase of 1-2 items per transaction (which doesn't work when people are just walking back inside after each purpose), stores are trading at shorter hours so staff can attempt to restock with what little they have and not get verbally or physically abused. Also so the store can have additional cleaning done. Then the first hour of trade is for pensioners and those on government benefits (only happened recently, and guess what? There was hardly any stock to replenish for these people because everyone else has bought obscene quantities for weeks previous). And also, online ordering (for home delivery) and click and collect (where you order online and pick up in-store) has been cancelled by our 2 largest chains. Honestly, at all the supermarkets I go to regularly in my area (maybe 5-6), 65-70% of the stock is gone, 10% are random items strewn about the place, household staples are extremely rare or non existant and the stores are full of people zooming around like vultures looking for a discarded pack of toilet paper 😂

In bad times its usually the egoistic, the unfair and the brutal who survive. Being nice and respectful is a luxury reserved for good times or for those bound to always be in last place. Also don't expect anything good to come from being nice, you'll only get some peace of mind, but you cant eat nor drink that, neither can your family. If you don't know how the situation is going to turn out - with a major global economy and health crisis inbound, and with shortage of food production possible and likely, egoistic hoarding as precaution makes some sense. Not dissing you 7en, I know what you mean - - but I tell you I hoard shamelessly when I feel its a necessary precaution that could be VERY important in dire times to come. I have ''hoarded'' some food and boy, it feels good to have some amount of security in that area.

People like you make things worse for everyone else, so you need to be restrained. We shoudl have started rationing weeks ago.

News are kinda grim, I just read that 627 people succumbed to the virus today, and that just in Italy. Yesterday it was 500 and the day before high 400's.
I also read that a more aggressive mutation has emerged that makes far more critical cases, thats also the reason why our curfew has been extended by 2 weeks.

Stay at home order in Illinois now... fucking christ. Going to be interesting to look back at this and see how much more damage we did than the virus ever could have.

Laundry day today. That was a very long time ago last time. Apparently, when you quit your job, you're supposed to do a lot of other work instead. Also, writing, I need more discipline. We'll see, I need to organize more structure. As for Corona, I hope everybody is suitably scared by now. I'm good with numbers, and very early on I did some preliminary projections from the data available then, and I realized this has the potential to become very bad. Now more data is available, and it's leaning more towards my worst fears than in a hopeful direction. The only thing that will put a brake to this is quarantines and shutdowns. The plan that Britain and Germany seemed to want to follow previously, will fail simply due to the lethality of this virus. It seems they have realized that now. ...A bit late. Keep yourself as safe as you can. Wash your hands, keep your distance, beware of people and things touched by many. Use gloves or hooks to open doors etc, if you can.

It's all Corona these days here in the Netherlands as well, with (yesterday) nearly 3000 cases, and 106 deaths. I live in Eindhoven, which lies in the province of Brabant with the most cases of COVID-19 (just over 1000), although my town isn't as affected as other larger towns for some reasons. There isn't a complete lockdown (yet), but people are hoarding toilet paper and stuff just like everywhere else. Even our Prime Minister called out on this (again) in yesterday's speech even saying that people should stop hoarding because it's "achterlijk", which literally translates to "retarded". Yes we can say the Dutch version of "retarded" here.
So schools, daycare, restaurants, bars, public hotspots and tourist attractions are all closed down, and more and more "non-essential" shops are closing down too, because almost nobody goes shopping these days.
And I lost my job because my (former) employer decided to get rid of all temporary employees all of a sudden. I actually liked the job I had for once. And I'm still pissed off about it. Yes I know people are dying, and I'm not the only one, but I still feel bad.
At least the sun is shining...

The delivery service of all major grocery store chains are fully booked up for the next two weeks and the calenders doesn't extend further. Same situation for a coworker 20km away. He suffers from asthma.
WTF
So much for avoiding the crazed aggressive people in grocery stores these days. Sigh.
People are panic buying like it's the apocalypse. We're creating stupid shortages that aren't actually there. But if people keep buying up supplies for many months, eventually we'll get fights in stores over what's left to buy. Can't wait for the looting to begin...
Mankind, thousands of years of evolution and we're still selfish stupid monkeys. No offense to monkeys!

Today I got a crazy good deal for RD40P3 Mask filters, 10 bucks a piece! I bought 20. If used with a military grade full protection mask it gives the user a protection rating factor of 1000 (which is 99,95% filtration rate), compared to a half mask with a lousy factor of 48. Mankind, thousands of years of evolution and we're still selfish stupid monkeys. No offense to monkeys! People are just afraid.

I was wondering has the magnitude of what is happening really sunk into people or are they in shock or are they really in denial, nothing will really be the same after this, there is no going back to how things were in 2019, this is a historic seismic event on a par with a world war or the great depression a lot of people are going to have to grow up very quickly and that statement also includes people in their 30-40's. The status-quo is dead we will all have to quickly adjust to a new reality. I remember reading books and articles about historical "hinge points" now I'm living through one, initially it's an almost surreal feeling but day by day it's becoming painfully real.

The status-quo is dead we will all have to quickly adjust to a new reality. I remember reading books and articles about historical "hinge points" now I'm living through one, initially it's an almost surreal feeling but day by day it's becoming painfully real. What I think is gonna change forever: * Countries will switch back to more rationality instead of globalism. If this crisis is showing us anything its how important it is to produce necessary stuff yourself. Other countries immediately put an export ban on their wares and china exports were severely crippled. * The European Union might be done for. Whenever a crisis happens Europe is NOT a Union, every country is on its own doing their own thing. The EU has become a lumbering useless giant only creating asinine laws for lobbyists and drawing money like crazy. This crisis has demonstrated this more than any other event. * People will self-isolate more. It is expected that the virus will establish itself like the flu, and it will return in waves for years to come. People will keep more distance, the old people will stay at home more often. * This crisis might be used to get rid of physical money once and for all, because it spread germs, and you can make people stop hoarding by regulating it. Politicians have been wanting to get rid of it for quite some time to have even more control over their citizen. They will use this event as a springboard for their agenda.- * A great depression will follow this event, that's for granted. A lot more unemployed, a lot of little and medium sized businesses gone, * More violence on the streets. Immigrants coming to Europe will find a Europe stuck in a great depression and they they won't be their number 1 concern anymore. I can see more immigrants resorting to violence and forming gangs more than ever before.
