Chugster, have you got a photo of your default Sara with the new normals, but in the same lighting as your first picture?
I like preset 3s diffuse, but the pore details are just too much sometimes. Would changing the normal help this?

Yeah, changing the normal gets rid of all the pores and stuff, I used the one from preset 1 and Sara has such beautiful skin now As for another screenshot, they are both taken in SAM node, but ive messed around with my settings alot so im not sure what settings the original pic was taken with

Funnily, for males, it's also the Normal from preset 1 (Shane) that is the smoothest. It's like they forgot to patch the other eight or something.... I wish I used preset 1 on female preset 3, but I used 6, which looks nice, but seem to generate a bit of shading, making the face appear a bit dirty.

yeah, we need an update, my game wont load so i have to do a repair and play with the default textures...hopefully this will be fixed in the future....its gonna be a pain if we need to reassign textures/normal maps every time a patch hits

I used the Recovery Tool and then restored the .DLL file that came with MEA Explorer back to the original (you could probably just delete it and hit 'repair' in Origin too). Then I updated the game, and replaced the .DLL file again. Re-exported my textures and imported the ones I wanted to use. Game started up just fine and I was able to make a new modded Ryder. Even re-installed the pale skin mod and the underarmor-as-casual-outfit mod. Everything works! Though again, I did start a new game... I don't know if that matters.

All merit is for those that made the tools, awesome people like Warranty Voider and Wavebend, without the tools modding wouldn't be possible, so a hurray for them . So this is how the new Sara's default texture from patch 1.06 looks , I don't like that they added a lot of makeup to the texture, it's hard to change the lipstick on CC with the lips being too red painted on the texture .

Awesome guide fialka , it's really useful for new people in modding, thank you so much for your time. My english is bad and I'm not very good at posting long guides, it takes me too long but if anyone need help with textures, modding or whatever let me know . I've found that hmf_head_xxxx_mask.res is the specular map, which changes the shining on the skin if you want to add it to the guide or test it yourself. I tweaked the ao_head_mean.res too which is the ambient occlusion map and it makes some little changes with the light on the skin too, but the important texture files are diffuse_mean.res, normal_mean.res and hmf_head_xxxx_mask.res in that order for texture swapping. Comparison pic for hmf_head_xxxx_mask.res file, right is with preset 9 specular map, and left with default Sara specular map. My personal big thanks for pointing to that files! For a long time I was straggling with Jayde diffuse map - on any preset for me it gave effect of double brows. The only way I could remove it is by first using mod for changing presets. Turns out, hmf_head_xxxx_mask.res was responsible for that nasty imperfection - now I can modify anything without need of extra mod install! Thank you!

The normal map makes some weird shadows on the brows too if you use a different normal map than your preset because they don't match, that bothered me a lot and it seems the mask file soften it a bit. We have to wait till we can touch the textures in photoshop to fully fix that issue. Why the hell they put the brows along with the face texture? what a sloppy job .

So you know how I was all 'everything works!' with the patch? Yeah... funny thing, that. Today I went to load my save from yesterday, and guess who got a freeze on load? Not sure why it worked yesterday but not today, but, I did find a fix! After some trial and error I figured out that it was the texture replacements responsible (mods like the paler skin mod work, you just have to re-install them, and make sure you don't save over your modded game until you re-install, or it'll revert your character back to the default palest tone and there's no fix). I did some digging and realized that they apparently updated the preset textures in the new patch. Hence the freeze - remember the crashes we got when we tried swapping textures in different locations? That's what's happening here. So instead of swapping textures in the old location, you have to go to: Patch > Win32 > characters_sp.toc > win32/dev/characters/player/bundles/sp/blueprintbundle_pathfinder_female_customized (or male_customized) (Before we went to Data not Patch. The rest of the directory is the same.) You'll have to export the textures like before, and re-import them, but within this new location. The one thing that's different is that Jayde's (default Sara) textures are no longer under "Jayde." They're under "Universal." I notice there's a "Universal" option under the male heads too. I wonder if this is default Scott, which means we can mod with it now?

I did trying re-exporting the files. In fact, I did that yesterday post-patch and the game started up fine. But today I couldn't load my save, and the texture swaps were absolutely the culprit (I could load the game with just my other mods installed). Swapping the textures in the 'Patch' directory instead fixed it. I'm working with female Preset 8, if that matters - with Jayde's diffuse map and Amy's normal. I know @carefull was having issues as well. Not sure why things are working differently for different people - I'm just glad I was able to fix it!

You can definitely mod Scott, but I know when we last tried the one preset we couldn't work with was default Scott's because he's in a separate directory (where default Sara is in the same place as the other female presets). Post-patch that may have changed - but even then we wouldn't be able to add a thicker beard to default Scott. We'd only be able to take his stubble away completely or add his face texture (stubble included) to a different preset. Don't have time now to test that myself.

Is it possible to replace pre-patched Sara texture? I don't like how she looks now. Definetely no, because pre-patch texture files, all of them, crash the game. fialka thanks for the tip. I will try carefully exporting, and if it crashes the game, will try modifying files in the patch folder.

Same here - when I manually replace texture files in the same location as before, everything is fine. However, when I tried to use old version of "default Sara skin" - I had infinite loading screen bag. Guess, that mod needs some work.
