I really liked most of the collectables in HZ:D. They all came with some text passages or audio logs in the codex and they helped you puzzle out the mystery of that world and how it developed. Also, I really liked that not all of the very minor ones were noted on your map. I hate it when it's all just lawn mowing the map for markers and you don't have to actually look at the world anymore and you cannot be surprised. In H:ZD, you could still just stumble across an old world artifact and be rewarded with some more info about the old world. Combined with the fantastic world building they had, I though it was great. I hope Starfield will also have a nice mix of POIs that give the player a good idea as to where to find most of the cool stuff but also some secrets, that you will only find by really exploring.

Yeah, collectable stuff is great as long as it's interesting. Nothing wrong with getting distracted by the world.

THey did, but understandable given that the game is padded with pointless Collection bullshit and most ppl are too ocd to not do "everything" so they keep doing the stupid grindy shit until they get bored and stop playing. Given the games on that list, that would account for almost all of them except Kingdom Come, which is a game most people in general probably don't understand or able to appreciate. Or maybe it's full grindy and pointless collection stuff that you accuse the other games of. Kingdom Come doesn't have collectibles. I suspect the reasons for the low completion rate is that the game is hard and the saving mechanics isn't exactly "On demand" or at least it wasn't at release. I personally didn't finish despite having 55 hours in it and liking it a lot. I died out of my own stupidity, but my last save was 3 hours ago, so I didn't bother continuing after that...

Yeah, the saving system was ridiculous on release.

Skyrim's main plotline wasn't too bad Holy shit, I almost pissed my pants. Need a warning tag for a post like that, god damn.

As for Skyrim's main plot, yea it's so great that basically no one ever finished it despite playing the game for thousands of hours. I've never in person met anyone who ever finished it I think I finished it 3 times. It's not a particularly challenging critical path. I've probably completed all the major quests twice. And probably a dozen abortive bouts of messing about. Fallout 4 remains my 'most played' Bethesda game.

an even bigger indictment of how boring people thought it was. I'd argue it's less about any boredom of the critical path, more that uniquely Skyrim offers so many opportunities to be distracted by other things. There are plenty of games where the critical path is the only interesting thing to follow. Given that Skyrim is one of the most convincing GOTY's in the last 15 years, any issues it has (no game is perfect) are hardly an issue for most people. I'd like to see some of that magic in Starfield, and frankly I expect it will be there.

Like you said, people play Bethesda games to explore the world but that doesn't mean the main quest was bad per se. There were plenty of memorable moments such as time travelling using the Elder Scroll, going to Sovengrade and meeting Paarthurnax who is a beloved character among fans.

You just dont understand what peiple like in a decent open world game. They dont play for the story. Story path is just a means to guide the player around the world and suggest further exploration. I finished Skyrim once, but played several chars. Same in FO4. In New Vegas It's why BW fails with open world. They just dont get it and keep making bigger levels instead of shaping a world to play in.

BioWare always had optional areas to visit and has local storytelling unrelated to the main quest at least, some don't even have that. Everything is about the main quest.

This hurts me! Ok, I guess 34.1% is pretty good, given this list but still, if you haven't finished the story of that game, you REALLY missed out. This is my problem. I admit it. OCD to do everything on the map and get immediately overwhelmed. When I hunker down and just do it, I'll quickly begin to see it as a chore which drags on forever before I can get back to the juicy story. But, by the time I do, I've forgotten what's happened and why. I hate that and also the way my body feels sitting there for so long staring at a bright screen while becoming irritated my vehicle or horse or whatever can't get around some obstacle. Yet I force myself to do this for hours to complete some dumb unfulfilling empty map. This is my biggest concern and worry with Starfield. Andromeda. Assassin's Creed Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. All games I feel like I should love, but can't bring myself to play longer than 20 minutes because I get so overwhelmed with the map sizes, annoyed with the repetitive content, and bored with the lack of story. You are correct, it's not challenging in the slightest. But if anything I would say the fact that most people didn't finish it despite how short and easy it is is an even bigger indictment of how boring people thought it was. They just dont get it and keep making bigger levels instead of shaping a world to play in. I'll never understand people who play games for no story and just for exploration. I guess my sense of exploration is easily fulfilled by going outside and going on a hike or exploring new places and doing new things irl. I see no satisfaction in doing all that on a screen because it becomes too repetitive- oh there's that same tree again, same rock, same cactus... unless there's an incredibly intriguing story (which I can't get by going outside) that makes all that melt away.

There is absolutely nothing unique about Skyrim providing distractions from the main path. That is in fact the primary thing open world games do. It's formulaic and measurable. Most people who play games want objectives, they want a goal to strive towards, they want something challenging to test themselves. Most people aren't reclusive introverts who refuse to leave their house and know they can just go outside if they want to aimlessly wander around the wilderness.

And yet people are still drawn to it, so clearly the game has goals that they can achieve. Even mindlessly wondering around the world is an objective in itself. That's what makes Skyrim unique from the others. The freedom to go whereever you want and be whoever you want.

This is what Andromeda should've been. Should've? I wouldn't say that. A thousand barren planets with nothing to do except build settlements/scan flora and fauna is exactly what I don't want to be doing in Mass Effect personally, at least not as the thing that's going to drive the majority of your playtime hours. If I wanted to do that crap I would just play No Man's Sky. Also, this is Bethesda, so the companions are probably gonna be ass, again, not something Andromeda should have emulated, despite the ones in Andromeda being bad already. Combat is typical garbage Fallout 4 combat. If there's one thing Andromeda did well it was that, so again, not something to emulate. Storyline about ancient alien artifacts and uncovering mysteries? Andromeda did in fact do that, it was just lackluster. But again, this is Bethesda, their story writing is typically not that good either, As bad as Andromeda's plot was, Skyrim's plot is a literal meme it's so terrible. Let's not forget their newest release, 76 literally didn't even have human npcs and told the entire story through fucking holotapes. That's as bad as it gets imo. Honestly the only thing from this game that I personally would want to see Mass Effect adopt would be some form of space combat and immersive space traversal. I actually mean that Andromeda should've been about discovering the galaxy, explore planets, travel to different places, learn different cultures....you know having adventures. If done right, Andromeda would been a good game.

I think the main quests in Skyrim stop the civil war and defeat the evil dragon are fairly good. I like how they present the reasons why the Empire and the Stormcloaks are fighting and the reason feels more real, the stopping the evil dragon is cool how it's done, if a bit convoluted because the lore of The Elder Scrolls series has always been a little lackluster to me. Not bad just a little vague and not interesting to me.
Been playing Fallout 4 and the main quest to save the PC's son gets lost in all of the various factions and side quests the game keeps throwing at you. I also not a huge fan of the cyberpunk elements in the game stuff like the synths, the memory den, teleporting and etc feel out of place there to me. The building settlements could have used a better interface and some more options like having the ability to combine places close enough to form a larger settlement or even a small town.
I do think Bethesda Games relies way too much on modders and honestly without the modders I think Skyrim and Fallout 4 most people would be done and over with them.
As long as they give me the option to switch to a third person perspective in Starfield then I'll give it a chance when I get a XBX or a PS5 to play it. If it is just FPP RPG Bethesda can expect me not to give it chance, because I don't like FPP RPGs and they don't work for me.

I dunno, it feels that even without mods Skyrim and Fallout 4 would still sell very well. The two games broke records for Bethesda in terms of sales. That being said, yeah Starfield definitely has third person view based on its gameplay.

I'm playing Fallout 4 because I'm waiting for Starfield.
It's just about scratching the itch, for a while at least...
I wonder how much Starfield will be 'Fallout in space'?

From the gameplay they showed, it's more "Skyrim in space with guns meet Fallout outpost building". People would say it's the same thing as just Fallout 4, but there are gameplay differences, especially at the content design level. TES focus on "dungeon" content, Fallout focus on overland content. Example: in Skyrim, most bandit camps, even small one, have a door because the chest/boss is inside a cave or fort. In Fallout 4, it's just the outdoor camp structure, no interior. The gameplay they showed for Starfield had most combat in interiors, so it seems to follow Skyrim/TES content design more than Fallout.

However, in the trailers you can see quite a few snippets of fights outside (especially again fauna). Also, since the loading screen doors seem to finally be gone, the I assume combined indoor/outdoor scenarios will be the norm (as we've seen in the mission they showed as well).
I do agree that it will feel more like Skyrim though, mainly because (thankfully) it doesn't look like we'll have a VATS system. So as far as I am aware, combat will mostly happen in real time, with maybe some slow-downs to choose stuff from wheels, which is more in line with Skyrim's design.
I really can't wait to see more. As far as I am concerned, the combat we've seen so far seems to be exactly what I was hoping for. Kinda first person (if you choose) Mass Effect.

Why the fuck does everyone in these recent "developer videos" across the industry this year keep looking progressively more like a parody of the Capitol population from the Hunger games or some third world gangbanger who just got out of prison?
