Doing decent aliens is something I think is near impossible. Most of the time they either end up too human or look like they're being weird for the sake of being weird. Obviously I can't say what anything alien should look like, but lots of bits sticking out all over the place usually just gives the feeling of being odd for the sake of it.

It's disheartening to see so many concepts for alien designs that are more interesting than the uninspired Kett design. Though even the early stages for Kett concept art was better looking than the final product in my opinion. It seems the designs for aliens got less ambitious during production. Hope some of these ideas make the sequel.

The tribal looking mounts remind me a bit of the Collectors, though it's mostly the shape of their heads and the multiple eyes.
I admit I would freak out a bit if I ever heard, "assuming direct control" in Andromeda.

Some very interesting designs for alien races. Hope we see some of them in the future with DLC or sequels.

Got some more drawings by Ben Lo, this time with kids! My absolute favorite is the Krogan one. There are few familiar faces here, likely used as a template. Here's his description of the art: "Very early on on the Mass Effect Andromeda. We had a week called Mass Effect Week. Which gave each of us an opportunity to come up with any cool idea for the game. This was the proposal I came up with… Since the Mass Effect one, fans have been fascinated by the universe, and created many fan art, most of which was of the Kids. As a generation Ark going to Andromeda to start a new life. There are bound to have kids of every race aboard for the mission. Krogan running around with kids on his back, Salarian teaching their young on data analysis, Asari teaching the class a lesson on the Milkyway and so on. This would have been a great opportunity to have more life on the Ark. Give the players what they have been asking for. Put more at the stake, giving the player a much more important reason to fight for." I'll be adding these to the OP to keep things organized.

Another case of the concept art being orders of magnitude better than what we see ingame. The concept art makes things feel alive, what we have ingame feels more like cardboard cut-outs. I think considering the Initiatives mission it is disappointing that the only references we have to children are from either a human criminal we do not even get to lock up or just message terminals in New Tuchanka.
A bit convenient that every single child inside New Tuchanka will be inside the residential area. Some of those messages are really funny and being able to see some of the kids referenced would have been nice.

I do really like the concept art with kids. After all, it's a Civilian Initiative where we are supposed to colonize worlds. One thing that bothers me in the nexus is that theres no leisure stuff around. Shure when we first arrive on the Nexus it's almost abandonned, but the more we progress, the more we build colonies and that we get closer to 100% viability, we should see more & more leisure stuff around, more people enjoying themselves. All we see is people in space suit working around, even in the Vortex bar. I hope in future installement(DLC or MEA2) we will have more stuff like the Pressidium on thee Citadel and kids & people hanging around not in battlesuit.

For me, this is probably the most important concept work in the lot here. It better establishes the community that the Initiative brought with it as a bustling cluster of life. This was something the Citadel in general lacked as well, but at least here, it made sense that the first game would not have a fully established community just yet. Hopefully, the next game really steps it up and creates a more vibrant setting similar to this. My favorite in this group is the asari teacher surrounded by children. That's definitely something I'd like to see, with perhaps Ryder (or any other PC we play) being able to observe briefly.

Romancing a turian in a video game =/= being attracted to them. Yes, there are people who are (you do you), but for the most part I don't think that's what it's about. They like the personalities of the characters. Personally, I have trouble romancing a non-human even in a video game, but that's just me. I had Sara romance Jaal on my initial PT. (First BioWare alien romance. Asari don't count. ) Liam was the plan, but he's so f-ing stupid that he was repellant. I liked Reyes okay, I guess, but I acted with Kadara's best interests in mind, choosing Sloane. I was not going to be denied my "Matchmaker" Trophy, so Jaal it was. His personality and arc are top-notch; but it was still uncomfortable. It's just gross, to me. If they'd had a human arc with all of the great content of Jaal, I'd have been super impressed. It's all very good, and blends with all the rest of his story arc very well. (Half of it is his regular arc, with changes, I guess.) Too icky, though. I have 100% of the trophies, now, so no more dirty compromises. heh, I am exactly the opposite. I was attracted to jaal before release because he was a great-looking alien and all mysterious and different, but the romance content made me really push through it with my teeth grinding at it being a must for me to experience for the story purposes. I really disliked the frighteningly huge and invasive family, the dialogue on the F!Ryder part awkward/shy to the extreme, the sex scene was really embarrassing (I am more into interesting ways to show characters awwww... kiss a-la SWTOR) and his voicing downright the least attractive male voice. Which is odd, since most male voices are so good in bio games.
Anyways, yeah, if I am to experience a memorable romance in Andromeda, it is with Reyes, and he is a boring human. Which is really ironic!

Personally, I thought most of the designs we ultimately got in the game were rather great. The kett and angara aren't, particularly the kett, but another problem is the color palette. Illustrations will usually capture liveliness of imagery a lot better than any playable game engine would, since you can make everything glossy and crisp with no concern for rendering limitations.

I'm replaying as Sara, again, and I hate how obnoxiously awkward she is. Scott is written as confident, and at times pretty smooth. Sara is impossibly awkward. I can't imagine any living person saying the things she says in the way she says them. It almost makes me want to skip romance arcs I haven't seen. She's only normal with PeeBee, because PeeBee makes it an easy topic to broach.

Are some of the character art in the plates in second spoiler for new aliens that are coming or where they all for Kett? It's very possibly a mix of both. I have no doubt that there's lots of concept work floating around that never really made it to the web as ideas thrown about for both the Kett and Angara as well as possible other races.

Not necessarily. Take Fallout 2 for example, that was a game where the communities you visit feel alive and it had much greater visual restriction than current game. It is not just the image you see but the dialogue and attitude that make the feel.

She's only normal with PeeBee, because PeeBee makes it an easy topic to broach. F!Ryder was my first char, and I liked her overall, just not in romance with Jaal. I did not romance others. My m!Ryder flirts with everyone, and he's way better as far as romances go. Though, going back to concept art, I found myself laughing when that poor animator was explaining about his much misused reel about how they had to turn on the heat in the animations because actors were reserved on stage. Now I can't stop laughing whenever I see a romantic scene because I keep seeing something like Mal trying to embrace and kiss Zoe to tease Wash.... back to concept art, just like with the animator talking about his work, I am divided between seeing those interesting screens and backroom process, and just sticking to sitting in the audience and watching the final product. also, I am puzzled by multiple screens with children, I am wondering if there was supposed to be a montage for colonization success with lots of children shown? Is it coming as the happy beginning to be soured by whatever happens in MEA2? Who knows...

There will likely be a ton of children that pop up in-between games as the outposts grow into cities, and watching just a small portion of that expansion would be amazing. I feel like these scenes would create a breathe of fresh air for the established races, and bring something very new for long time fans. Maybe Ryder will hear a history lesson about how the first outposts were established.

I can see Kesh totally dispelling these myths. That, or "Legend tells of a solitary krogan that defeated the kett singlehanded. With his mighty hammer, struck the first post into the ground, and upon that rock, Podromos was born."

99% of those concepts are better than any of the shit in the game. Dude wasted his time and talent because some idiot said to make the aliens "human and relatable."

Look at the crashed ship.Clearly looks like human design. I'm a little dissapointed because concept arts had much interesting stuff than the final game.
