1- Female tal-vashot warrior, daughter of Sten Arishok who hates her father and left the qun, reunion or enemy paths.
2- Young male grey warden warrior, friend and disciple of the hero of ferelden/warden commander, helping with the research to cure taint, searching for the missing warden.
3- Female elf rogue, enemy of solas, maybe a disciple of an old elven god who survived, bringing some lore and insight from the other side of the spectrum.
4- Female mage, follower of andraste (not crazy fanatic, just reasonable and open minded) showing the good side of religion and the maker.

Anders was a pretty good Andrastian, helped to purge the Chantry... while not female... We had many "good" and good Andrastian companion, mage and non-mage as well... too many in fact.
What about a good Tevinter mage? A part of the Imperial Chantry?

I like a companion who doesn't put up with crap from the main character. Even one is not afraid to punch the main character instead of being punched themselves. Tells the main character his/her plan to complete a quest is pathetic. That companion comes up with his/her own plan that turns out to be better. The same companion talks smack to the other companions. The reason why this companion is needed is because he/she is very skilled at what they do, not just to mock the other characters, but fighting. The same companion could be called upon for interrogating a baddie for information.
I wouldn't mind seeing a companion that looks like Lloyd from DAO or Gamlen from DA2.

I'd like a character like XAN from Baldurs Gate, an outright chicken that has a chance to get panicked in every combat.
Also a well done near chaotic evil character like bishop from NWN2.
We have far too many middle of the road companions that can be twisted to how the player character wants them to be. In fact people have been so spoiled in this regard they get darn right upset if their companions does not leap to their commands without question. (See Sera and the people that hated her.)

I LOVE Wynne. But I find Bethany to blander than unsalted saltines. I like a companion who doesn't put up with crap from the main character. They tried that Vivienne. She's super direct about not supporting your decisions. She puts you down. She talks smack on other companions. And she's recruited because she's a highly skilled, influential, and powerful ally. Personally, I love her. But many people found her offputting and I'd say that she's one of the most polarizing companions. I'm all for seeing more companions who will aggressively challenge the PC and can't be swayed towards a centrist view. Harkens back to BG and those companions. Speaking of whichs....... v I'd like a character like XAN from Baldurs Gate, an outright chicken that has a chance to get panicked in every combat. Also a well done near chaotic evil character like bishop from NWN2. We have far too many middle of the road companions that can be twisted to how the player character wants them to be. In fact people have been so spoiled in this regard they get darn right upset if their companions does not leap to their commands without question. (See Sera and the people that hated her.) I agree that I'd like to see less companions who can be swayed. I think some should be able to be swayed. But I think it's important to have others that stick firmly to their beliefs. The logistic issue with this is that companions in modern games have much more detail and resources put into their development, so there are less of them. In BG, there were like 20 companions, but each were shallower in detail. If they did that in a current gen game, it would greatly reduce the amount of companions available to each PC. Again, I'd be okay with it, but many fans would probably complain. Alot think that the DA2 and ME3 rosters are too small. If we started with 9 companions (3 on either extreme and 3 in the middle) and those on the opposing side either left or forced a confrontation, you'd be down to about 6 companions. I think alot of people would be annoyed. But, to me, it would potentially be worth it to see more strongly held views expressed. It's one of the areas where I firmly support a "realistic" approach to development.

Going off of themikefest's post, I'd love a more divisive gay guy as a character. Outside of Dorian's perspective on slavery, all the Bioware gay guys have been pretty likable and '' gay best friend '' material, especially Dorian, and Gil too. I'd like something a bit more harder to chew, problematic and whose problematic views can't be changed, challenged yes, but no changed, a gay guy who won't bend over to kiss your butt and wont become your gay bestie even if you agree on most things. Someone who will only open up to the person who he is being romanced by, but otherwise has no interest in anyone else, outside of tolerating the people around him.
Of course, similar characters are welcome even if they aren't gay men. I don't really like when if you make the right choices, you become pretty much besties with a companion. DA:I felt too chummy and Dora the Explorer at times.

It's one of the areas where I firmly support a "realistic" approach to development. Haha, I see, what do you say, I thought too at first, but I found interesting her character later: according to my explanation, she's a martyr. the Sunshine, who smiles when carry her burden, and feel, she's a burden. A very good character to present the situation of the apostates – as an Andrastian mage, who just wants to live, but feels she jeopardizes her whole environment with her mere existence. Not with her magic, she's good with the magic, but because the law. But she's not rebellious. Hates this, but not rebellious. I think, she reported herself. How would able the Templars to catch her if not? She's smart, hid her whole life, but hated this. Her family kept her safe – and she wanted to pay back. Bethany: So, you were in the Circle and ran away. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to do that.Anders: You've been an apostate your whole life. Bethany: Exactly. It was never anything I had to work for. Other people always took the risks, to keep me free. And just if Hawke supports the rebellion she shows, how she feels really. But if Hawke betrays her, she remained a smiling martyr. But this is just my theory. I think, this fits the story. And much more fun to play a non-mage Hawke with this theory... And: we can't forget, that the writers' goal was always to justify the player's decision, whatever is it.

Canon-wise, my Hawke brought Anders in the Deep Roads because he’s a Warden and able to sense the darkspawn, and Bethany because he didn’t want to leave her without protection in Kirkwall, so she became a Warden. I know it’s not the best choice for her, but it fits how I roleplayed my Hawke. If they were in Ferelden, he might’ve made a different choice, but not in Kirkwall. And it’s something I agree personally on my canon Hawke as well.

I'd like to see a Mage Templar.
I'm aware of how contradictory that can be, but I believe it would be compelling to have a mage who specializes in combating other mages.
Of course, a major hurdle to that is how they would keep their magic "under wraps" especially in close proximity to Templar abilities; further muddling the issue is how Seekers get their templar-esque powers, i.e. a Spirit of Faith reverses their tranquility. That could lead to a conclusion that Templars are really mages, just with a different "mana".
I have no illusion over the difficulty of creating such a character, but if Dwarves can cast magic, elven gods are still around in the flesh, and qunari can be potentially descended from dragons, then I suppose it wouldn't be completely out of left field.

The mages are the best against the mages, without lyrium addiction. They have many anti-magical skills. They don't have be a "Templar" (probably even impossible), but can be the most important parts of an anti-magical force. This is why that three-mage-bullshit is a nonsense. Especially because of the Dalish don't have Templars. More mage = more safety. Mages can teach the little mages and stronger stronger than a non-mage to fighting against an abomination, if accident happens.

Because before they were my bros and everything was cool, but now they might be thinking about me sexually, even though I have all the charisma of bin lining, and that makes me as uncomfortable as I make women feel, and I don't like the taste of my own medicine. Even if that were the case bikelock it's not as if the inverse is any better. Whether you are for its inclusion for its own sake or against it for the same reason. It's the same trite bullshit homie.

Eh... I think moral alignment as a concept is pretty dumb and restrictive.
I don't need the game to tell me which characters are good and which ones are evil. I am perfectly capable of making up my own mind.

My ideal #TheDreadWolfRises roster would be: 6. A Tal-Vashoth ex-Sarabaas who hates the Qun. We've had one loyal Qunari, one who can go either way depending on player behaviour, and we've been able to play as a Vashoth. Time for someone who was brought up under the Qun and has every reason to despise it. Female Qunari please, we have not had a female Qunari companion since....ever. Which is coincidentally also my #1 on my new companions roster. Female Qunari, we've had fighters already and she cannot technically been raised as one, make her a mage, a Saarebaas. Also romanceable.

Maybe the polite ones still exist, but have no interest in discussing with someone who isn't very polite I'm not the one who begins conversation by assaulting the character of someone I don't know nor have never met. I'll just state that, but I'm the impolite one? Adorably inaccurate if you ask me. I'd argue most on the board know little of my character to begin with, little lone enough to form judgements over me. Well considering all I've seen you do in this forum is be condescending, I'd say there's enough to go by. And if that is not true to your character, maybe it's you that should change how you come across in the internet. And you can't take a moral high ground when you are more than happy to join in on the impolite tone of conversation. I've never said you were the only impolite one, I'm not saying I'm polite either for that matter, so please stop with the self-victimization. If you want to have a discussion that doesn't dwell into impoliteness, you have all the tools in your shed to do so. Whether you use those tools, are up to you. And that goes for everybody. - - - Now, on topic. Give me a gay male elf. Thank you.

My ideal #TheDreadWolfRises roster would be: 9. A Dalish elf warrior inspired by the Green Knights who is mad at Solas and wants to fight for her people against him. this is my Inky exactly
I like the 3/3/3 model for companions and would quite like for it to return.
Specifics companion-wise I'm mainly after:
- A female qunari, preferably a mage, and preferably who doesn't like or even actively opposes/wants to dismantle the Qun - A female dwarf. Scout Harding would be fine, she's cute. we are just sorely in need of both a female qunari and a female dwarf in a main game, it's been three games already (I know Sigrun's there in Awakening) - Maevaris Tilani, my new queen - Felassan, because I'm still in denial that he's dead and HE'S THE BEST ELF. like, I know he's dead, but that won't stop me crying for BioWare to bring him back - I've said it before but Ima say it again, I'm dying for an elf companion who is FOR his or her people. and by people I mean modern elves in the modern age. it's not that Fenris or Zevran for example were anti-elf or anything, not at all, but the focus of their plotlines were other prisms. they were an escaped slave and an Antivan Crow first, an elf second. which is great and their stories were super interesting and also you're more than your race ofc. I just really want someone like Sera, who cares about the little people and the underdogs and was kind of a representative of the average normal citizen of Thedas caught up in all the crossfire, but for elves specifically. they don't have to be super elfy or whatever (whatever that even means) but they shouldn't be divorced from their elfyness or have elf-cringe like Sera was (still love her tho). ideally this elf is a City Elf. they might be a small-to-medium time rebel leader, like a Iorveth type, or a freedom fighter or someone like Briala more spies and shadowy, or a Robin Hood type who steals from human highups and gives what he gets to his community of elves or elves as he travels around. they'd oppose what Solas is trying to do and believe in making a world for and making things better for elves in the present. I need me a Iorveth peep or a Briala on the roster. the only other notable City Elf heroes I'm aware of are Garahel and Wenna di Ladia. edit: and Shartan oh my god i'm so sorry Shartan I forgot.
"Wenna di Ladia, an elven archer and descendant of the Emerald Knights who fought during the Third Blight. She became a rallying cry for alienage revolts and rebellion, and is a hero to this day among city elves"
I'm DYING for someone like that. don't care if they're male or female, don't care what class (warrior or rogue would be preferable I think), don't mind what slant they take (shadowy like Briala, or a cruel/kinda dark a la Iorveth so like straight up anti-human and burns human villages / civilians and does other questionable things, or a heroic freedom fighter style person, or a more peppy/light hearted sort of Robin Hood..) I DONT CARE. I just need an elf who is for elves. GIVE ME MY MODERN ELFIST BIOWARE - Given the direction the next game is going to take, I would possibly also like for there to be a Dalish elf on the roster who is against Solas' plans and isn't crazy/stupid/insane. I don't believe that most of the Dalish would support him and I want some reasonable Dalish representation who isn't my PC for once. love Merrill but she was an outcast. :'( it would be really interesting to me to explore/witness their feelings on all the revelations and maybe they go from believing in the Creators to not. how would that affect them? it's just not the same to explore that journey in a PC instead. anyway at least please don't slaughter clans or a clan wholesale in this game BW, that trope is done to death, and show us some Dalish in-game who aren't being in league with Solas and/or dumb (not that I'm saying those are the same thing). &, there might be too much overlap between this char and the City Elf Champion Person above, which is why this char is "optional" on my list. - and our pet this time should be a griffon because they're back and I REALLY want to fly on one.

After having finished Dragon Age: Deception, I'm going to make a new list. I really liked the 3/3/3 companion split and the 3 advisers so I'll be using that.
Advisers: 1. Aaron Hawthorne: With him having decades of experience and still being able to fight expertly, if he isn't a companion I can see him being an adviser in combat like Cullen was. After all we learned that he is teaching Vaea to fight. It would also bbe a nice connection to Origins since he fought during the Fifth Blight as well as the war for Ferelden's independence. 2. Charter: As we see in the epilogue of Trespasser as well as the comics, Charter was being groomed as Leliana's successor so I can easily see her becoming our new spymaster type of character. 3. Maevaris Tilani: While her status as leader of the Lucerni with Dorian may not allow her to be a companion, I can see her easily being our political advisor since she knows all about the system in Tevinter.
Mage Companions: 1. Francesca Invidus: With Dragon Age: Deception her character is clearly being established to be involved more in the events of the plot. I find she offers a good opportunity in storytelling in that her family was involved with the Venatori and while she wasn't involved herself she was a sympathizer to their cause. This could be an interesting way to examine the perspective of these people in Tevinter without actually having a Venatori companion. 2. Female Tal-Vashoth: As others have pointed out, we've had Qunari characters who have either been staunchly loyal to the Qun and characters that can go either way so I think it would be interesting to have one that is staunchly against the Qun. Perhaps once her magical talent was discovered she didn't want to suffer the fate Saarebas do so escaped and became Tal-Vashoth. 3. Male Fog Warrior: Since the Qun-Tevinter War will definitely be among the major plots in the game, having someone who fights against both would be great. Plus the Fog Warriors seem to be a popular faction among the player base so we'd finally have a companion.
Rogue Companions: 1. Vaea: She seems to be a very popular character among the comic readers and if any of the comic characters became a companion I see her as being the most likely. She also offers a few interesting and unique aspects that could be explored in the plot, from basic things like the noble rogue to her unique perspective of the world due to growing up in an Alienage, having family in the Dalish, to now venturing the world as Aaron's squire then partner. She has a good mix of modern elf perspectives so could be interesting to contrast with the ancient elven stuff we will see in the next game. 2. Lace Harding: With how popular she seems to be among the devs and the fans, it is almost certain that we will have her return as a companion. Like some of the others, she is among those who formed the new secret Inquisition so it makes sense she like the others are involved. Plus bioware always has at least one returning character from the previous game join again and it seems she will be it. 3. Qun-Follower: With the war between the Qun and Tevinter, I think it would be good to have a companion that represents the Qun's side. It could be a returning character like maybe Tallis, or some new character.
Warrior Companions: 1. Marius: Since Tevinter doesn't really have Templars like in the South, having a character who is their equivalent could be interesting. Plus his connections to some of the stories like Calpernia could lead to potential narratives. 2. Male Ambassadoria Dwarf: With the unique history between the dwarves and Tevinter, this is something I definitely want to see explored and having a dwarf from the Ambassadoria would be the best opportunity. 3. Male Dalish Warrior: We've had elven mages and rogues in our party but never an elven warrior so this could be a great opportunity. He would also act as a good counter to some of the other elves in the party, maybe having mixed feelings about Solas whereas the others are fully opposed to him.
I don't expect all these characters, but can see them doing some of them.
As for romances, assuming they follow the 2/2/2 pattern plus a couple extra like in DAI: Straight Male: Marius Straight Female: Francesca Bisexual Male: Fog Warrior Bisexual Female: Harding Gay Male: Ambassadoria Dwarf/Dalish Gay Female: Tal-Vashoth Extra 1: Maevaris(either available to men or both) Extra 2: Vaea(Ace Spectrum, available to both) Extra 3?: Maybe the Dwarf or Dalish that isn't gay(available to both) That would give everyone at least 2 or 3 options.

This is a good list. Some things that it's made me think about:
I really hope that they don't draw TOO heavily on the books and comics. Your list has 12 characters. Only 5 new characters of significance. Versus 7 of them are returning. And only 2 of those are actually present in the prior games. That would mean that there are as many characters from the books/comics as there are new characters. And those are both DOUBLE the amount of returning characters from the games. Compare that to DA:I where (with the same breakdown): 7 new characters, 4 from prior games, and only 1 from the books/comics. I hope that reading all of the books and comics doesn't become necessary to fully understand the plots. DA:I suffered a bit from that and I hope they don't keep going down that route. At most, I would want 1 or 2 from the books/comics (with Mae being one of them).
Agreed 100% of the Fog Warrior (personally, I'd like to see a Fog Dancer, but either works for me) and the Ambassadoria dwarf. Very cool new unexplored facets of the lore that I'm really looking forward to learning more about.
We actually have had two elf warriors: Fenris and Ariane. The latter was even Dalish. Although, her role was pretty small, so I could see there being room for another. And since it's been a while since we've had a Dalish companion (only Velanna and Merrill), I'm ready to meet another one. Preferably a warrior or rogue so that we don't get yet another Dalish mage.
I also hope that they don't get carried away with having so many people in the main group as romances. In DA: I, there was a 7-5 ratio on romance to non-romance in our main group. Your group ups that to as many as 9-3. I'm all for romances, but I just don't want that to be such an important part of the character development. If you look at my list of my favorite DA characters, literally only three of them are romaceable: Isabela, Dorian, and Alistair. The others are all non-romanceable for various reasons: Vivienne, Carver, Aveline, Wynne, Sigrun, Varric, etc.. And I'd hate to think that those characters would be less likely to be included in the future. I'm always a fan of the 6 romance approach (2-2-2 with at least one ace option in there).
I do hope, for your sake, that Vaea is added and that she's romanceable and ace and maintains a "good alignment" so that you can get what you are looking for though, since I know that's important to you.

I know. As I said I don't expect all of them, and a few were placeholders. For example the military advisor doesn't have to be Aaron since he could just play a role with Vaea's story, and characters like Marius and Francesca were just putting names and faces to the general idea of Magekiller and Venatori sympathizer respectively. Of the ones on the list, when it comes to comic characters I see Vaea and Mae as the most likely while the others could appear in the game but not at the capacity of main team members. Oops, I totally forgot about Fenris. But yeah, it'd be interesting to have another warrior and it would be the first time we've had a male Dalish. I'm glad you liked the general ideas for the characters though. Like you said there is many unexplored facets of the lore and they could also give us every perspective of the main conflicts in the game. Inquisition was 8-4, not 7-5. But sure it doesn't have to be among the main cast like that. Some of the romances could be characters outside the main group, so long as they do them well. I was mainly just making the list using only those characters since that's what previous Dragon Age games have done, with the one extra to help balance the numbers out to everyone having 3 options with the exception of straight males and maybe lesbians as having 4. If they did cut say Mae from that list, everyone would have 3 options but it would be nice for their to be a trans romance. Thanks.
