I’m conflicted
I like the characters that have been introduced in the comics, Marius and and Tessa excepted, and I like the idea of having them as companions.
However, the fact that the comics are the work of outside writers who say they made the characters makes this unlikely I think. With the possible exception of Calix and Francesca, for whom the latest comic served as an origin story but also had them parting ways with the other characters (I think?)
So yeah, I like them but I’m not sure the DA4 developers are actually that involved with the creation of these characters.

Like it seems like Mae will make perfect sense. We are going to Tevinter and we know that the Lucerni are currently working to reform Tevinter from within. She's got ties to both the Inquisition and past major companions (like Alistair and Isabela). Her being present in the game makes perfect sense on the surface.
Cole, on the other hand, felt like he was included solely to be a connection to the outside materials. His direct connection to past major companions is pretty limited (just Wynne, right? Did he even meet her directly?). And he really didn't add anything to the DA: I plot that was particularly compelling to the plot. He was much like Sera in that way. But the major difference between him and Sera was that I didn't understand a lot of what he was talking about because I never read that book. So his dialogue about the tower and his quests with Rhys and (someone?) fell flat since I didn't know what I needed to in order to enjoy it. Whereas with Sera, it was all included in the game since she was new to everyone.
So from my perspective, I''m cool with comic/book characters being involved. But I strongly prefer that they are plot relevant if they are. And, if not, then they are limited to no more than one character so I don't have multiple "Cole"'s running around confusing me. LOL.

That is the sort of thing high level designers and writers on a skeleton team can do long before proper production begins. Although that’s partly why I imagine Calix and Francesca fitting a bit better than Aaron and Vaea, since this story seems to be their introduction but it didn’t look like they were continuing with the others (I think, I’ll check this evening but I think it looked like they were going their separate ways). Whereas it seems Vaea and Aaron are going on to more Inquisition missions and will have their storyline continued in whatever the comic writers are working on now.

I really hope that they don't draw TOO heavily on the books and comics. Your list has 12 characters.
I agree. There is much of them. I believe that only 3 from 9 companions are establish characters. Well that could be a coincidence but DA 2 and DAI also had three.
DA 2 (Anders, Isabela and Merrill) and DAI (Cassandra, Cole and Varric)
1. First the returning companion (DAA: Oghren, DA 2: Anders / Justice and DAI Varric) I don´t think that get one this time but Lace Harding could be the substitute. Also she is a female dwarf.
2. Then a character how less screentime in the previous game but the Writers really liked him/her and want to expand this character in the sequel (DA 2: Isabela, DA 2 Merrill, DAI: Cassandra)
My obvious choice Calpernia
3. A character from another medie. Well there was none in DA 2 but in DAI there was Cole from the Asunder novel. I choose Maevaris Tilani over everyone else. No Vaea, Marius, Tessa in my party.
4. A female Qunari. A real Tal-Vashoth. Maybe Shokrakar or someone like her. I don´t think that we need another male qunari.
Also the perspective from a loyal Qunari isn´t necessary after Sten and Iron Bull. I see her as Rogue than Warrior. Again it would be nice to have a non Qunari Warrior this time
5. A Fog Warrior. A elven male Rogue or human female rogue
6. Someone like Daveth or Adorno Ciel Otranto. A charming human male rogue or warrior.
7. A human male Templar. He is a Tevinter loyalist
8. A Dalish Warrior like Ariane. I would prefer a female over a male.
9. Something fun and more unique for the remaining mage. A crazy mortalitasi would be neat. An older human male.
Someone like Jolee Bindo (Kotor 1) but a lot more bonkers.
And when to Advisors. I don´t think that Bioware will repeat this system fron DAI but i call them Faction Leaders (Major NPCs) 1. Dorian Pavus is the Leader of the Lucerni Faction
2. Archon Radonis is the head of the imperium and the traditionalists. 3. Charter is the Leader of Tevinter Inquisition forces 4. Sten as the new Arishok is the commander of the qunari military. 5. Rasaan as the new Ariqun is the leader of the qunari priests and spies (Ben-Hassrath) 6. Solas is Leader of his faction 7. Fog Warrior Leader Bob is the head of the Fog Warriors. 8. Maybe a crow leader from Tevinter crows.
Aaron Hawthorne and Vaea plus Tallis and Gatt are just Questgivers in my list.

Great list, just couldn't help making fun of BioWare's stupid stereotyping Thanks. But if you want more "tradition" should i include a human male Grey Warden? Of course the main straight romance option for females.

I won't lie, I've many of my own Dragon Age fan fiction character archetypes I would love to see made canon; Black Knight Imperial Reavers, Ubermench Dwarven nobles, Rogue (class wise, not dissidents) Imperial Templars, a romancable Ayn Randian female tal-vashoth saarebas, a bound shapeshifting demon, Lyrium enchanted half golem cyborgs, spirit warrior Emerald Knights, an artificer who finally cracked gaatlok and has musket rifles/pistols, a Rivani Seer possessed by a spirit AND a demon (think Wild Flower), and so many others... As far as Companions and/or Advisors, I think more than anything I want our general crew to to explore a specific theme; Origins had the rebel, ragtag bunch of misfits struggling to save the world. Awakenings had us rebuilding the fallen, once prestigious order. DA2 had the extended family and allies in an urban fantasy/castlepunk noir. Inquisition gave us the Justice League/Avengers* of Thedas. Not all the comparisons are perfect, and each one subverted as many heroic tropes as they paid homage to. Since DA4 will take us to the "Evil Empires" of Tevinter, the Qunari and possibly Evanaris, I want our Companions to echo and deconstruct villainous archetypes like the Legion of Doom and Illuminati. Instead of some rising star organization, let us beat the Dread Wolf at his game in the shadows and through proxies. Instead of the Hero with a Dark Secret, let's have a Companion everyone thinks is a unholy monster at first, but is secretly saving people. Instead of the apostate who automatically betrays us, how about one who starts as a deadly enemy for an arc**, but we can convince to join us? What if we actually explored the complex emotional layers of a Vivienne, a Behlen or Tallis as they worked to change the world? *Obviously, themes like the Inquisition being like the Avengers is purely surface level. Though to be fair, Anti-heroes like the Hulk was a founding member, Wolverine and Sandman have been Avengers, and Doctor Doom was technically one at least once . **I don't count Loghain, since at that point he was beaten and had no other options. A prominent foe who willing switches sides at the height of their power? That I find interesting. Particularly if they can be romanced, thus exploring the Dating Catwoman trope .

This is what I've been saying, just take the essence of Dorian and put it in a body of a straight man. Boom, a freaking, goldmine. I'm here for my very own gay Blackwall but I think he'd still be bi. Partly because if he is that '' KISA '' mlm (content fans) have been wanting, they are not going to deny him from the female userbase (who don't want to do mlm romances with a male character). And also partly because I do want a gay male elf for the first time ever. We are going to be all elfy next game too, and I'd like more Dorian's in the game, and by that I mean plot relevant homos to soothe my soul, not the other meh Dorian stuff.

And many are not bigots; they just enjoy playing as a woman because they are a woman... it's the case with many older female gamers who were denied the chance to play their own gender for many years. I can't say I have as many f/f playthroughs as m/m but it's my second most popular, and then all my f/m playthroughs sputter and die midway through the game lmao I'm a mess

Hanako Ikezawa(I'm maintaining your list while changing the commentary) Advisers: Since I HOPE we are not in charge of troops as the no name ex slave rebel I hope to be, I just don't see a need for "advisers" in general. I still like the permanent role they represent, though, I just hope they are more like... Strong Contacts and Mentors. 1. Aaron Hawthorne: Since he is dealing with his alcoholism, I would like not to do another "Commander with an addiction" again as an Mentor. 2. Charter: Was it Charter or Harding? Anyway, she seems a very mean non empathetic person. I can't see myself wanting her advice. 3. Maevaris Tilani: I would like her to be a Mentor. She's someone a character could look up to for any number of reasons, even shady. Mage Companions: 1. Francesca Invidus: I like your reason for including her. I also like that she is a Blank Slate- she didn't have enough "screen" time to give me any impression of her one way or the other. And she could continue to be a passive lil girl or go Strong or GTFO direction as well. I like that she is still a ? 2. Female Tal-Vashoth: I'm kewl with this option. Although Saarbaas is not the only "bad" job in the Qun world. Imagine your job is to give birth to children you then aren't allowed to raise past weaning. Grieving Actual Mother is a character we haven't gotten to deal with. (we flirted with Mother and Kid in toe with Morrigan) 3. Male Fog Warrior: Either gender Fog Warrior is fine with me. But there are also other cultures, if less relevant to the plot we suspect. Like a Rivaini Seer, although that would be in the mage section I suppose. Rogue Companions: 1. Vaea: I'm cool with her being there. I dunno if as a companion- she's locked to Aaron's side. I'm bored of him, so if I have to deal with him if she's in the lineup, I'd rather pass for more baggage lite companions. 2. Lace Harding: People want her to romance her, and I am firmly in the camp of her romance flag being respected. Since everyone is certain it won't be, I'd like her not to show up. 3. Qun-Follower: Tallis sounded like she'd swallowed the Kool Aid and Gatt was a victim being empowered by bullies. Especially considering we're likely AT WAR with the Qunari, hard pass at this very likely betrayer. Warrior Companions: 1. Marius: Boring character. hard pass. 2. Male Ambassadoria Dwarf: YES. 3. Male Dalish Warrior: One that hates what Solas is doing while being like a Green Emerald Knight dude. I actually prefer the idea of an ancient elf who knew of Solas from his time before he slept. And now he wakes to stop him with us and offer us insight into what we're dealing with. Want him to be tragic and think he's going back to sleep for "forever" this time after he stops Solas only for us to warm his heart and make him want to live in our time with us.

Want him to be tragic and think he's going back to sleep for "forever" this time after he stops Solas only for us to warm his heart and make him want to live in our time with us. Well I was writing with the notion that the Inquisitor would be returning as the protagonist, so that was the reasoning for some of my choices like certain characters or the whole having advisers again. Aaron: That is actually a really good point about him and Cullen having a similar thing about getting over an addiction. I hadn't even thought of that when placing him. Okay so maybe not there and perhaps instead just a character attached to Vaea's story. Charter: While Leliana was grooming both, with Trespasser and in the comics it seems that Charter is the one taking up Leliana's mantle more than Harding. Maevaris: Glad we agree on her. Francesca: I'm glad you liked that. I think it would allow us to explore that perspective without having to deal with the issues that might come with an actual Venatori character like Calpernia. And yeah like you said there is a lot of potential they could go with her. Female Tal-Vashoth: I know there are other bad jobs. I only chose Saarebas because this character is a mage on my list so that's what her future would have been. If a Warrior or Rogue I could see them doing something like what you said. Fog Warrior: While there are other cultures to explore, I chose Fog Warrior since with the Qun-Tevinter War being a thing it would be good to have someone who was caught in the middle. Vaea: Maybe Aaron could just show up to help with her personal quest or something. But I'm glad to hear you are cool with her being there, since your opinion used to be more negative of her. Harding: Again, I'm hoping that we continue as the Inquisitor which would remove your worry about the flag. If we aren't then yeah I'd prefer she not be there either. Qun-follower: I hope they wouldn't be a betrayer, but then I'm hoping we can do things like choose a side or even negotiate both. Marius: Fair enough. Ambassadoria Dwarf: Glad you liked this one. Dalish Warrior: Having an ancient elf opposing Solas would be very interesting, for a bunch of reasons.

Well, here's my list of potential candidates
Romanceable Female Companions:
Straight - A true dalish elfy elf. Haven't ever had a straight female elf so might as well now. Probably a (previous) Tevinter slave. Is worried about her clan going missing, might be someone who betrays us.
Bi - Harding, I mean it is to be expected so there you go.
Bi - A Vint loyalist bitch, just a total bitch. Kind of like Vivienne or Morrigan, the kind of woman that elicits a '' QUUUEEENNN, PUNCH ME, KICK ME, DESTROY MY RIBCAGE, CRACK OPEN MY SKULL '' response from freaks. Since most bitches have been mages, I think maybe a warrior, heck, make her an imperial templar.
Lesbian - A tal-vashoth mage, potentially an escaped Saarebas. Wears her tal-vashoth status as a badge of honor, and tries to help other tal-Vashoth to integrate to the outside world.
Romanceable Male Companions:
Straight - Straight Dorian. Dorian except he is straight. A charming ladies man Magister who mostly opposes Dorian's reforms and has an antagonistic position at the start of the game, but you can make him realize the error of his ways, a whole '' tame this bad boy '' arc going with him.
Bi - Ambassadoria Dwarf. Since we are going to Tevinter, a dwarf from the Ambassadoria is granted, and this is a chance for BW to make a new dwarf as cool as Varric, and also make him romanceable. Probably a bit more dwarfier than most of our other dwarven companions have been. KISA elements.
Gay - An elf who isn't a city elf or a common dalish, an elf who opposes Solas. Potentially an ancient elf or a fog dancer/warrior, or part of a completely new '' faction '' we don't know of yet. Bring on the gay elves please, and elves that exist outside of the city elf <-> dalish elf spectrum.

Francesca: I'm glad you liked that. I think it would allow us to explore that perspective without having to deal with the issues that might come with an actual Venatori character like Calpernia. And yeah like you said there is a lot of potential they could go with her. I know that you don´t like Calpernia but why should Bioware choose Francesca over Calpernia?
Don´t get me wrong i can see the appeal. Francesca could be more likeable than Calpernia. But is she that interessing? I don´t think so. Your list is also to loaded with sympathic characters. Where is the conflict in the party? Also having Harding and Vaea in the party isn´t impossible but unlikely. Both are the nice girls who everyone likes in the party.
But isn´t that boring?
Every previous rogue was different from each other in their game.

I can see the appeal. Francesca could be more likeable than Calpernia. But is she that interessing? I don´t think so. Your list is also to loaded with sympathic characters. Where is the conflict in the party?
I found her more interesting than Calpernia, and overall as phoray mentioned she is more of a blank slate so that leaves more room for potential than a character like Calpernia while still doing a lot of the thing Calpernia would allow. As for where's the conflict, three of the companions are each on different sides of the just the Qun-Tevinter War, then a more subtle conflict among the elven characters about their perspective of Solas and his goal.

That's a broad statement to make about female players and don't believe it is true. it's fine you think that. But I get around to all the romances (with Jaal being the first exception as I find him annoying as hell. Would have liked Taavos to be a companion). Anders is one of my favorite romances and he is only workable in the romance with a male Hawke. It's because of the story and connection between Anders and Karl that is so well done, believable and tragic. It gives a stronger reason for Anders to go to Kirkwall and risk his life. Something the female Hawke line is missing, IMO. I'd prefer a Stroud or Kal, Nicolas personality to Blackwall or Dorian for a female pc. I liked them both but they are not even close to my favorites in DAI which are Cassandra, Sera, Cullen and Bull. What I meant was the female userbase, then specified the portion of female userbase who doesn't want to do gay romances and vastly prefer, or exlusively prefer romancing men with a female protagonist, NOT that the entirety of the female playerbase is like this. Dorian is especially popular with women from what I've seen, and that just makes me think someone like him (sassy, charming, a bit narcissistic) would go over well with the majority of female players, if a similar character was a bi/straight romance.

Yeah I'm not sure he is a favorite among that many straight females and still not don't quite agree with you. Dorian is a charmer though and some people do seem to like charmers so I will give you that. The part of his character I like the most and why I romanced him was that he stood up to his parents and then when he found out what his mentor was doing he left his home to stop him and that took courage and character. Kind of the opposite of Alistair who came kicking and whining. As much as I like Alistair I am hoping for a romance with someone more like the 3 I mentioned in my above post. It does seem Bioware takes care in their romances so hoping you get your wishes on your preferences. Well I'm going by my own experience, and what I see in fanworks. In ao3 (a fanfic site if you are not familiar), Dorian Pavus is the second most is the second most referenced/written Dragon Age Inquisition characters, after Cullen, and both Iron Bull x Dorian as well as Male Inquisitor x Dorian are the third and fourth most popular ships, both above Female Inquisitor x Iron Bull and Female Inquisitor x Blackwall. So, my mental gymanstics tell me that Dorian is pretty damn popular with women, because there's no way it's gay men writing all that fanfiction. Of course a point can be made about Dorian being popular BECAUSE he is gay, but I still think a lot of women would welcome him as a romance, or rather someone like him. I don't know what I want from DA4 in terms of romance, but I do want a new gay male companion. A well-written one with plot-importance. Top it off with a good romance and I'm a happy man. Qunari, Human, Elf, Dwarf, beard, no beard, rogue-y or a KISA, doesn't matter.

And um, let's not forget, there was a Dorian "straight mod" that was notoriously created. And it was downloaded a LOT. (Just looked it up: 4,333 unique downloads.)

Well, here's my list of potential candidates Romanceable Female Companions: Straight - A true dalish elfy elf. Romanceable Male Companions: Straight - Straight Dorian. Love this list. I would explore pretty much all of these.

As we're heading to Tevinter, I wonder if we'll see Eleni Zinovia again? David Gaider once said they had plans for her in the future, though whether that's still the case, who knows... I think she'd make an interesting companion, assuming we could make her a tad more mobile , and undoubtedly all that knowledge of old Tevinter would come in handy.

Oh, man, I would love that. We know that people can get turned into statues and back again - it happened to those pirates Isabela knows in Mark of the Assassin. A de-stoned Eleni would indeed make for a fascinating source of information on Tevinter history.

Having just recently replayed the mage origin, I would love that. I love that Jowan was just like, "Ummm... this is some creepy Tevinter shit. Also, LO HERE COMES THE DAWN." And Lily, being the devout Chantry sister she is, just thought it was evil and wanted everyone to stop talking to it. I found this from the devs: *edit* Lol just double checked, this was a Hrungr post on the old bsn
