I am sad, as Mike Laidlaw is a good dude and I've enjoyed his work at BioWare . I am reserving any further feelings about what this might mean for Dragon Age until we find out who his replacement is. Hopefully someone experienced in game development and knowledgeable about the franchise!

The biggest names of the MET were working with Montreal, and then Casey left and opened the way to the rest of key personal working in that game to leave, so you really think this is fine? Just an industry "thingy" people used to excuse all the departures? Fool me once, not twice. Still doesn't change the fact that those are two different teams and that most of DA's is in Edmonton, not Montreal. And we don't even know reasons why Mike left Bioware. It could be personal, or it could be something else entirely, or many things at once. Sure, one of DA4's leads left the game that barely started development because reasons, I'm sure he began working in the game with the mindset of leaving shortly after. I've seen your way of thinking in the years prior to MEA's release, not gonna pretend this is normal. Thisisfine.gif

I've seen your way of thinking in the years prior to MEA's release, not gonna pretend this is normal. Yes, because you sit in Laidlaw's head and know exactly when all decisions were made or for what reason. Mike wasn't just responsible for the game, but for all the material in-between games, so maybe he delayed his departure until all those side projects have been pushed further or settled, all battles to greenlight the game have been won, while he was searching for appropriate replacement for months and chose to leave when all appropriate decisions have been made. We. Just. Don't. Know. Correlation does not imply causation - just because we saw something similar with MEA doesn't mean that the same thing happens to DA. All we really see is end results of decisions made, without even knowing what caused them, until someone starts talking.

First Gaider and now Laidlaw. Damn. They have done some amazing work over the years and I wish them all the best in the future, whatever they pursue, but this doesn't bode well for DA4. Montreal was a great example of what can happen under the BioWare banner when big names and experience aren't involved throughout development.
It does seem like there's something going on behind the scenes, especially now that Casey Hudson has returned. Let's just hope it's not EA's meddling again. Please, don't fuck it up. Please.

Ehh, another big name being added to the ever growing wall over the last few years.
Really hope this isn't going to be Andromeda all over again if various people leave in the middle of the next DA dev cycle. I'm not accepting it twice in a row and so soon.

I'm not catastrophizing yet. I'm sure they had someone in mind for the position. We'll just have to wait and see. If everyone left in the same week or month then I would panic. So thank you to Mike and wish you the best for the future.

Don't want to freak out people, but is it true that job listings for Dragon Age have vanished from their site? Didn't really keep track of this.

Don't want to freak out people, but is it true that job listings for Dragon Age have vanished from their site? Didn't really keep track of this. They are job postings, so they likely were just filled. I've seen some new faces on Twitter recently like Emily & another who's name escapes me at the moment. And there weren't a ton of postings. I remember 14 at one point, then it was down to 11... And Mark just tweeted this a couple of hours ago... Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah Mike... Thank you for everything. We will see each other again. I am so excited for you to see what the next Dragon Age will be.

It is true, but it could mean anything from them having filled all of the positions, to HR taking down the page to update it with new listings. People at the office are still working, Mark doesn't seem to be perturbed about the game getting made, Mike thinks whoever is still there is competent. I wouldn't flip your lid about it, too much.

Didn't really keep track of this. i've read this comment from reddit i'll copy paste here. take your own conclusions. Subreddit Dragon Age guy: "Job listings for Dragon Age have gone as Nirolak from neogaf reports. So, this likely means the franchise is having a complete turn around in game design. They hinted at this with party control changes. Also it doesn't seem like Laidlaw parted ways with EA on good terms, he sounds very irritated, which I can only guess means he didn't agree with the change in direction. It might also be cancelled."

Darrah all but confirmed the existence of a new DA on twitter. As for parting on bad terms, that really doesn't tell us much at all. I'd actually welcome a new direction for Dragon Age considering I disagreed with much of his vision in the recent installments, but until we know what that is everything is speculation. MP only would be boo! but a return of tactics would be yay!

Mike Laidlaw is leaving? Good news. After Dragon Age 2's fiasco and the "Hawke single most important character in the universe of Dragon Age" crap, it is about time Laidlaw leaves. The dude has done very little to Bioware games other than misleading marketing.

Thank you for all your efforts over the years Mike, and best of luck in the future. You called it. You are now my official canary in the coal mine when it comes to Bioware disasters. I'm not kidding.

I give him a bit of leeway for number 2 because they were under serious time constraints, so everything would have been rushed. Inquisition on the other hand, I was very unimpressed with that. Empty zones, botched combat, VR nerfed, what was he thinking? :S

But also he's only ever worked at Bioware on the more action oriented titles of Bioware. Mass Effect, Dragon Age 2 and 3, Jade Empire, Sonic: the Dark Brotherhood (whatever that game is classified as.) He did work on Origins but I give Knowles huge credit for that. I dunno, to me he never represented Bioware's roots very well, never worked on KOTOR, NWN, or Baldur's Gate, and I think it was clear in his vision. His vision just never sat right with me

I think what I'm reading from you guys... Is that I should be freaking out... I wouldn't... Mike seems like a really cool, friendly guy and is probably really talented and good at his job. But he is one person. It takes a village. *edited because it seemed like I thought he was dead* *drinks for edit* True, but at a bare minimum, it will be a negative blow to morale for the whole DA team and disruptive to the current schedule, while a new leader is identified and put in place. If you will allow an analogy to surgery, is losing Mike like losing your spleen, which is survivable, or is it more like losing your heart or brain? Sure, all the different parts of the body do their share of the work and it's a team effort, but at the end of the day, do you have a wounded but living survivor, or an undead corpse aping the behaviors of a loved one?

There was a whole bunch of tweets from different DA devs giving no context about them a while back; they all make sense now. I think that's when Mike told them and they were just waiting for the right time to publicly announce this.

I liked DA2, so I am sad to see Mike leave. I'd rather the DA3 lead writing/decision making talent would be replaced. Hopefully the larger scale vigil is premature.
