This is sad news. I really liked Mike and I'm sorry to see him go, but I wish him the best. As far as how this bodes for the franchise, I'm not worried. They plan three games ahead and Mark is still there to guide everthing. I was wondering what the "well fuck" tweet was about. I'm wondering if we will still get comics and books?

You mean used to emphasize story telling. Not sure what to think. A few big names left during MEA development and I remember people saying no big deal, MEA will be fine. I don't think I need to say anymore on that. Now if DA4 is in development, there goes another one. I guess only time will tell. MEA lost people when Edmonton decided they didn't like what was done by Mtl after 3 years of development and scrapped most of it (which would cause a blow to the moral of the team working on it). DA4 seems to have have started development only a few months ago, so not quite the same thing, who knows how much of the game direction was already decided. They were staring at disaster from all reports. No Man Sky clone, procedurally generated worlds that many there couldn't figure out how to get working, exploration which they found dull (and which I still find dull,) how do you weave a compelling storyline through all of that? Edmonton shipped in Walters to give the thing direction and scope and to make the hard decisions, because it seems like the Andromeda team were off in airy-fairy land for a few years

DA4 just went from "must buy" to "we'll see." I for one love DAI, despite its flaws. At the time, I saw it as proof that the old, character-driven BioWare was still alive under all the corporate muck. Thanks for helping create some unforgettable games, Mike. Good luck with whatever you do next.

No, this is not good news, but for all we know, the decision might have been made months/weeks ago and they've been working out kinks and arranging replacement for a while now.

Oh wow, Mike has been with Bioware and Dragon Age specifically for such a long time. But yes, it does explain why the devs have been so on edge lately and why he removed all mention of Dragon Age from his Twitter bio a week or so ago (and then added "DA guy"). I can't help but feel apprehensive for what this may mean, but as always, time will tell. At least Mark has confirmed to still be working on the next game, which seems to be the most positive thing to take from this whole thing. I do wonder who will replace Mike - it seems they'll have some big shoes to fill.

Well, I'm... apprehensive. Lead developers leaving is disconcerting to say the least, though after more than a decade it isn't entirely unusual. With Casey coming in as the new general manager, I wonder if there's a bit of an internal shake up going on. I'm not going to pretend this doesn't make me worry about Dragon Age 4. It makes me wonder if Laidlaw left or was made to leave because upper management didn't like the direction and threw out all the work they've done so far (This does have me a bit paranoid...)
And I liked Mike! He created my favorite Bioware villain and I've gotten much joy from the Dragon Age franchise.

i'm not happy but i will not say i'm sad either.
Anyway, Gaider and Laidlaw were very close minded in a lot of aspects, i think as someone already said it in the post, seems since some couple of years ago that new blood it's needed.
for his part, i guess so much needed fresh air and kicked some big pressure of his chest, he deserves it tho.

I'm all for it if he takes on a role as a writer. Monolith's writing is embarrassingly bad on both Middle-earth games. Without the Batman "free flow" combat they took from Rocksteady, those games would be really terrible LOTR fan fiction.

While this makes me dubious about the next Dragon Age's development, I will continue to hope for the best. Everyone deserves to do what they want and what they need. I hope Mike finds both!

I'm happy if he's happy. But I'm also sad and worried for selfish reasons, because he was such a big (and great) part of the DA franchise.

This bums me out for real, if only because I've always liked Mike as a human being, and he's been a reassuring presence since things kind of fell apart with MEA. I haven't loved every single decision that he has, ostensibly, made over the course of the games, but I do think he's done an overall good job with the series.
I also don't think I'm going to worry yet, unless his replacement has a history of being gross. People get tired of their jobs, even ones they love, and video game development has a particularly punishing cycle. I can't blame anyone in a AAA studio that decides to choose life. Whoever takes over is going to be surrounded by people who have already invested a lot of time into the DA universe AND the next game- unless they're placed by EA specifically to change direction, they're probably not going to do too much in the way of turning it into something completely different.
Although, my kingdom for someone who will advocate on behalf of dual-wield warriors.

Let's not pretend this is normal, some of us did the same thing with MEA and look how that turned out. Definitely reason to be concerned. Two different teams. Even with Mike gone as lead doesn't change the fact that - in contrast to Montreal - most of DA team remains experienced AAA game veterans. The biggest names of the MET were working with Montreal, and then Casey left and opened the way to the rest of key personal working in that game to leave, so you really think this is fine? Just an industry "thingy" people used to excuse all the departures? Fool me once, not twice.

Exactly, but I think to some extent it's justified. People were worried about MEA and many of those worries turned out to be accurate, but the DA franchise is not in the same position. DA still has many of the original people still working on it and Mark is still in charge and it's not like Patrick as lead writer is a total noob. Anyway, I'm not worried but I think it's natural if some people are.

Welp this is not good for DA4. Anytime someone important leaves a project mid development it doesn't go well. Sigh, guess I'm going to take a prove me wrong attitude with DA4. I miss the days when I can just be hyped for a game and not worry about my beloved franchises getting shafted.
I do wish him well in the future he always seem like a nice dude.

Still doesn't change the fact that those are two different teams and that most of DA's is in Edmonton, not Montreal. And we don't even know reasons why Mike left Bioware. It could be personal, or it could be something else entirely, or many things at once.

Worrisome. Bioware needs a kick in the balls, but not the kind that knocks them out. It all depends on what talent they acquire and how good new leadership is...this industry needs more Kojima's, Miyazaki's, etc to create something that "stands out". Also keep in mind that senior staff burnout is a widespread problem, developing games like this take a huge toll on your personal life, or even your health. Now more than ever we need a pathfinder, heh.

Seems kind of sudden - he was in the early stages of PR mode for the next DA just yesterday. Hopefully this was a decision by him and not one made 'for him' by the suits up top.
