Lets get this one thing straight, even if it was a failure EA would never say that. They will redirect towards more positive metrics or keep it vague like "Anthem continues to sell well..." vs something more concrete like, "Anthem is Bioware's fastest/best selling product...." or " Anthem has surpassed our intial projections...." If a game surpasses it's initial projections then that is the literal definition of it being a success.

If a game surpasses it's initial projections then that is the literal definition of it being a success. Nevermind that success doesn’t necessarily mean *direct* financial success. There’s been a lot of talk about the success of many Sony or Nintendo exclusives and many people have pointed out that these games didn’t necessarily rake in as much money as one may think - but they aren’t expected to. Their task is to sell consoles, not necessarily themselves. With that, I’d like to point out that live services already make half or more of the revenue of companies like Ubisoft or EA. And - as mentioned before - if Anthem manages to, say, bring people to subscribe to their Access program and do so possibly for many years (thus also alleviating the need to create new titles each year and save money by churning out updates for existing projects), I can’t see how they wouldn’t be able to tout this as success. Also - something I’d like to point out that is directly related to the topic. Did people even notice that Anthem has *always* been primed for digital, rather than physical sales? There’s no special or collector edition with anything that ain’t digital. No fancy art book or figurines, no canvas bags or Javelin helmets.

If a game surpasses it's initial projections then that is the literal definition of it being a success. And - as mentioned before - if Anthem manages to, say, bring people to subscribe to their Access program and do so possibly for many years (thus also alleviating the need to create new titles each year and save money on churning out updates for existing projects), I can’t see how they wouldn’t be able to tout this as success.
But this has a chance to be it's biggest failure as well. I have no doubt in my mind EA was expecting this game to bring in subscribers. Anywhere you see ads, they're not advertising Anthem, they're advertising the premier subscription and saying that you can play the Legion of the Dawn edition. But if playing Anthem isn't a good selling point due to the negative reception you're not going to bring in as many subscribers as you would have had the game been a break out hit.
In reality you want people to try it, and then not want to plop down another $80 to keep the Legion of the Dawn Edition, so they tell themselves I'll just keep the subscription because I'll probably play some other stuff as well. But having people cancel after a month is not what you want. Even if they come back 6months, a year from now after the game has been worked on and buy it, probably at a discount, it's not what you have gotten had you hooked them on the subscription.

They discounted the physical LOD edition for both PS4 and XBox...base game and both digital editions still full price. Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop, and Target, all editions, physical and digital, all full price. This took me 30 seconds

If a game surpasses it's initial projections then that is the literal definition of it being a success. Financially yes, but has Anthem surpassed their initial projections? Many things working against it: 1) Review scores (kills hype) 2) Apex Legends 3) Divison 2 It's all speculative at this point, isn't it? I'll quote Mike Gamble from his Twitter when people were voicing their concern: "Don't sweat this guys. seriously."

Very well could be. Considering they've put out about 20 GB worth of patches in the last 7 days, that might be an accurate picture of their servers right now.

EA is in it for the "long game"...it's been almost 12 years since BioWare was acquired by them so they are finally making their move.

Eurogamer reports on the UK charts, only counting boxed games (no digital downloads). Others use low Twitch viewers as an indication that sales are going bad, or big discounts in various countries. EA expects Anthem to sell 6 million in it's first quarter. It's all guessing, because EA doesn't like talking about sales figures. If Anthem does bad, I'm pretty sure they'll keep a team on it like they did with Andromeda's multiplayer. They will still be able to make big money on microtransactions, even from one or two million players. I do worry about BioWare, Dragon Age and Mass Effect... Physical sales has been going down consistently each year, so using it as a metric of success for games isn't necessarily useful. While I'm sure Anthem's digital sales will be more impressive than its physical sales, I'm also fairly certain it will underperform due to the abysmal first impression from the demos and critics and gamers alike raking BioWare over the coals over the poor state of the final game.

What does the first week one way or the other tell us anyways. Isn’t a games sales more determined by whether or not there is a big drop off in later weeks? And for games like this isn’t the goal more long term participation?
I mean if it is successful or not I don’t think anyone even the people at EA or BioWare will know for months to come. I guess if it ultra tanked or was super successful they’d have a idea quicker but I suspect it’s up in the air for a pretty big range of sales.
