We do have some key lesser known parts of our constitution.
- Freedom to stick your tongue on a frozen metal pole. - Freedom to create maple bacon. - Freedom to play hockey on a frozen pond

What I want you to examine (and I would appreciate if you did so in good faith) is the reaction and the posts of your friend, who, by chance, happens to be American. As soon as he sees that I react violently to being called smug he makes sure to do it almost every time. Yes, I see the recurrence. I don't believe it's motivated by personal malice towards you but Hawkeye isn't known for pulling his punches in debate, particularly if riled up. But I'm not going to advocate for him, he can defend himself. What I would suggest, to both of you is letting this matter rest. I think this particular discussion has run its course. It's clearly not going anywhere and further comments won't be aimed purely with reason but will likely be barbed and little more than shouting matches and reintepretations of past posts "I never said this!" "show me where I said that!" etc. I was getting into that as well and I should've recognized it and disengaged. But it's hard to see when you're right in the middle of it. Anyway, let's let it go. The thread can turn to other matters or sink quietly, as the case may be.

Britain and France are like the estranged parents* who raised America - and we're both hoping it'll pay for our retirement home now that we're getting on a bit * (probably a lesbian relationship between Marianne and Britannia ... unless you want to use your Coq emblem, then you get to wear the trousers obviously)I always pictured England as a girl tbh She is:

I had a bit of an education on some different things when I went to Australia a few yeas back.
The abundant use of 'mate' (Wait, we are at Ayers rock, it is 39c thee is no water or boat anywhere near us!?!? Does this mean you want to mate? Now wait a minute here.)
'How ya going' What? How am I doing?
Tall blacks and flat whites. Coffee that is. Tall blacks it seemed were just black coffee, Flat whites were lattes I think. (Gave me a taste for them though.)
FANTASTIC meat pies all over the place. Stopped at a lot of small towns, each one seemed to have it's own butcher and its own bakery/coffee shop that often served delicious meat pies.
Road kill kangaroos, in Alberta we have road kill dear, coyotes, skunks, the most popular poor victim are porcupines. Dead roos on the side of roads, in 39c heat.
Also some of the secondary highways has no shoulders but lots of 2 foot round gum trees 6 inches off the road.
Have this lovely looking fruit on vines all over the place, the locals called them Paddy melons and warned us not to eat them.
Small flies are prevalent.....deal with it

-descends- ALASKA IS AWESOME. SNOW IS AWESOME. I'm going skiing this weekend, and the ocean's frozen up so the polar bears are starting to leave. I will note that I spent six months on cultural exchange in Costa Rica in high school. Then I went to the lower 48* for college and I think I actually had more culture shock trouble with college. Somehow, it was worse because they were speaking my language and technically it was my country... But with fences and people and small stores everywhere. *Alaska-ism for the continental United States There. Proof that Alaska should be part of Canada! It's not fair to keep you guys away from the good life in your frozen prison up there. At least Canadians don't know any better. You do have them hot springs though. Hmmmm... I envy your snow a bit though. I've only been to Alaska in that one month in summer when things actually aren't frozen (not ALL of them anyway) and it was AWESOME, so I can't actually tell what -20°F feels like. But at least when it's this cold the sky is blue, right??? I don't see the sun for weeks and months in Germany winter where it rains 90% of the time. The last time our tiny pond was frozen over enough to skate was several years ago, I believe. No wonder Germans (and Brits!) are so negative. Our weather sucks the joy out of everything. I'd send you a picture from my office window but I'm not allowed to do that. But it's GRAY. Fu*king gray all day! Winter is actually the best. It's when it's easy to get around -- because there's snow everywhere -- so even if you're off the road system, you can travel to the rest of Alaska without planes. You can dress up for the cold, but you can't escape from the heat! And there's this lovely magical pink orange light you only get off of snowy mountains that just makes everything feel good.

Ok, look. I'm not sure why the word "smug" is such a hot button with you- it's not like anyone's calling you an asshole or otherwise insulting you. I can't speak for Hawkeye but I don't consider smug to have inherent negative connotations, even if the word means " undue pride in x". But if you're really taking it this personally I for one apologize. Please note, I'm not required to, the forum expectations clearly state there will be conflicting opinions that may not be to everyone's sensibilities and so long as there is no malicious intent or outright attacks, this is perfectly ok. We are not interested in babying anyone. I have not been malicious and I have tried to reason with you. I don't believe Hawkeye is a troll (not in this case, anyway), but both he and I approach discussions like this from a logical argumentative/ debate point of view. We make assertions, draw conclusions and counter arguments that other people make and we expect the same in return, until we reach some synthesis of opinions or break off the debate. We don't really encounter or respond to immutable opinions that if attacked, cause people to get offended and leave all that often. Personally I don't believe that's the best way to participate in discussions like this, but I won't tell you your business. Anyway, I'll let Hawkeye speak for himself if he has anything to add. For myself I will apologize again for calling you smug or implying you didn't post in good faith. It may simply be that I misjudged how you handle these things and assume you do as I do. It is I who should be apologizing to you, because the diagnostic was right in front of me this whole time. Yes, I take great pride in being Canadian. That this pride is "undue" is another story, which I do not intend to pursue. What I want you to examine (and I would appreciate if you did so in good faith) is the reaction and the posts of your friend, who, by chance, happens to be American. As soon as he sees that I react violently to being called smug he makes sure to do it almost every time. And as for your denial of an issue? Well, that would seem rather blindly patriotic on your part (oh the irony!). And yes, not the least bit smug, since you categorically dismiss the idea that such a notion could possibly exist in Canada. Have you ever bothered to check out this sentiment with your own research? It's one google search away. Do not worry, mate, pal, I can Google alright. Now will you call me anti-American because I tell you, personally, to Google : "pulling the wings off of flies"? At this point, smug isn't what I'd describe as your sheer reactivity. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't have some sort of national pride at all. I encourage it so long as it doesn't descend into nationalism. Along that note, I asked you to describe what Canadian culture entails, and what being Canadian is all about. You provided descriptors, which is fine, but on their own, they're not encompassing enough since they're broadly applicable to a great many national identity's. I'll ask again, what makes your national identity unique? I'm hoping you'd realize the argument CrutchCricket was going for when he listed off ways that Canadians identify themselves, largely in relation to other countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom. Now, about me being a 'bully': get real man. Am I a bully for saying that, yes, Canada has a cultural trend involved with belittling their neighbor (and to which you certainly aren't alone among the world)? Yes, I am. Am I saying that your attitude would be that of denial to such an idea in Canada? Yes I am. Am I a bully for pointing those out? If that's what you want to call me, fine, I'm a bully. Lastly, I really hope you actually learned what I'm talking about here via said Google Search. Given the 'good faith' statements you've been making, I'll take it in good faith that you actually bothered to read my sources and look up this attitude. In return, I knew the meaning, but looked it up regardless. So... you're saying I'm cruel? Shoot man, you don't need me to rag on the hypocrisy of a certain facet of Canadian culture to know that's the case in many things. But I find your definition egregious as well.

Far too much of the can dish it but can't take it forum behavior.

I do, and I love the mountains. I trained at Ft. Wainwright in Alaska for Northern Warfare (the US Army's polar/arctic training center), and I love it. I was at Elmendorf for a bit but that was mostly just a flight transfer into Africa back in 02. Ah the joys of post 9/11 military traffic. It was...sort of dirty truth be told, run down. Well, after BRAC rolled around in 2008, JBER got a lot more traffic and a population boost from the downsizing of Ft. Greely (which has since grown again for some reason.) They upgraded a lot of the infrastructure to accommodate the increase in personnel up there. That said, a lot of complaints still exist about amenities in many of the homes and barracks, and the fact that there basically isn't a real town for hundreds (thousands?) of miles makes it a uniquely shitty post. I wouldn't know personally, since I only reported to Wainwright on my own time for school. I never went anywhere near Elmendorf/Richardson. Drove up there myself (I made the trip from Seattle to Fairbanks in the middle of winter all in my Subaru, a proud achievement of my life considering the lack of roads at some stretches!) which was how I was able to go through BC and Yukon. Yellowknife is an awesome place. It'd be cooler if it had more of a population, but it's a lot like Juneau or Anchorage in its Northernly charm. I turned the entire trip into a vacation since I wasn't doing anything else at the time and I had a block of about a month to spare between arriving at the school and leaving it. Two weeks on either end, and a drive that takes about 5 days altogether, and you have some time to spare just enjoying the scenery.

The total lack of empathy, the idea that everybody should be envious of you, the sense of entitlement, the narcissistic supply should have pointed me on the right direction sooner. Of course you'll deny it because admitting it wouldn't fit with your perfect self-image. But I will not interact anymore with you until you consider visiting a health professional.

I thought we were supposed to let it go. Unfortunately due to being provoked again I will have to answer, if only in the hope that other people will not suffer the same abuse as I did. All because I called you smug. Did that word rub your nose in dog shit when you were younger? It's a an attitude, a behavior. And you're showing a lot of it. I am getting very real, man. It is my (ex)health professional opinion that you are suffering from a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Say what about abuse? Did I mentally scar you or something? If that's the case, I don't know whether to feel proud or disgusted. So... I'm just not going to address it and ignore it entirely. It's probably better that way. It is my non-health professional opinion that you can't produce a real diagnosis from an online interaction. Nor would I call it professional to make such an opinion based on these kinds of online interactions in the first place. Disregarding the appeal to authority here, I'm only going to address one point; I'm empathetic. Don't get me wrong. I can feel how other people feel. I know how they feel, more often than not. I merely lack sympathy for them much of the time. Sympathy = agreement. I don't agree with any of your assessments, but I don't much care at this point either. Trading barbs over what was a reflection on a foreign cultural reflection with very real background has no purpose, and for that we can agree (though for the wrong reasons.) As for your last barb? Great! Nice knowing you!

Yep, that discussion is done. We're moving on. A while back, in a context I can't now remember, I made the comment that New Zealand is Australia's Canada. But having read the Australia vs New Zealand section of the site Hawkeye linked, I realize that was pretty off the mark. Here's the intro to the article: Canada and the US are (as I'm sure everyone knows by now) incredibly similar in climate and culture, except in the extreme far ends of the countries. But those gaps are far larger between Australia and New Zealand. I mean I knew the stereotypes of "the Outback" and well, Lord of the Rings, but it never really dawned on me how different the climate is. Anyway, anything more I can say would just be regurgitating the article at this point. I may do some more research on it, but in the meantime we do have some Aussie and Kiwi users on here yes? Anyone care to chip in? No need to go at each other like us Northerners though.

docsteely, The Hype Himself, yeah we're done here. Do not respond to each other on this anymore, or at all if you feel you can't be civil. The discussion is over.
