Truth is that you can't please everybody. No matter what, there's always somebody to whine. Just a fact of life.

Yep. You'll never find one thing that would please everyone or even most. Especially today when it seems to be mandatory to get offended by the weirdest details or behalf of someone else.

Is it possible for any company to produce a strong female lead who doesn't derive outcry from either side (feminists/everyone else, etc)? For example a lot of people liked Lightning, but a lot of people disliked her because they thought she was a Cloud rip-off. A lot of people liked Lara Croft, but I know a lot of people said she was catering to sexists, etc because of her looks. So is it possible to create a strong (personality and physically-wise) female lead that will not elicit outrage from either point of view? I think Aqua from Kingdom Hearts is a good example imho, I haven't seen too many negative criticisms about her from either POV so she seems to be a pretty popular female lead. Lt. Ripley from Alien would be a good example of a strong female protagonist who does not feel fake/forced and most people like.

On topic - I like Lara Croft as a protag and am currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Not sure people who say she caters to sexists have a leg to stand on. Never once seen either of the newer games play on her beauty/sexuality. Other than maybe one small cutscene where she climbs through a gap and there is a 'small' amount of cleavage shown. The games are mostly about how she's a super intelligent, brave badass. Which is fun.
But yeah, in general, there will always be some who want to find problems with any depiction of women. Even ones where there IS nothing wrong.

One of the worst things about Star Wars: TFA is Rey being ridiculously good at everything. Luke and Anakin took years of training to hone their abilities and they had pitfalls (Luke lost is fucking arm too, BTW) whereas she just does everything perfectly with no training at all. From combat, to engineering, to piloting, to using the force.
Kylo Ren wiped out Luke's Jedi academy and he's been been taught by the incredibly powerful sith for years, and she more than matches him with, again, no training whatsoever.
Hell she even teaches Han how to fix the Millennium Falcon. Yea, no. On topic: I'd definitely say Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs. She's up there in my list of top movie characters.

Really the amount of people who complain about Rey... none of them think that there might be a reason for it For example, she could have been part of Luke Skywalkers new generation of Jedi like Kylo Ren, and just had her memories taken away so she could live a normal life away from the First Order after Kylo Ren destroyed Lukes attempt to rebuild the Jedi Would explain why she learned things so quickly, when she would have already gone through some Jedi training, and would also explain why Kylo reacted so negatively towards knowing that a girl was involved
Either way... is she powerful??? Yes... well, potentially. Is she perfect??? Nope
I kinda think that its hard to get a balance right... when it comes to female protagonists no matter what I guess there will be someone complaining about it... which sucks but eh... personally im just happy with a realistic character... doesnt matter how many people they can kill or how many people they cant, what matters is how well the character is developed

I have not seen The Force Awakens but from what you described it sounds like she may be what is considered a "Mary Sue"? (inb4 chants of sexist pig ) That sums up the character.

Well unless she gets some sort of past revelation in the next film that shows she was trained by someone powerful it won't make much sense why she is better than Obi Wan/Anakin/Luke when they were her age, with supposedly no training. It's obvious that J.J. Abrams was going for the amnesiac wunderkind backstory but the writing, and execution left a lot to be desired. Me personally, the buildup and reveal was better handled in The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis' character. *crazed look in eyes* " Chefs do that?" - Charlie Baltimore
