Boy, do I want to start making my own canned pickles. You have to be very careful though, you probably know that already because you work in a gastronomy-related area, but anaerobic bacteria that can grow in poorly preserved home made canned food can totally ruin your life, and its sometimes really hard to identify slightly spoiled canned food. I had botulism once, all I can say is holy cow. I already thought about canning stuff since I grow tons of fruits in my garden, but I never did it out of fear of getting food poisoning. I eat all the stuff fresh instead. In a survival scenario I'd probably try to preserve food by drying and salting. The latter is known to be slightly carcinogenic but hell, people preserved food like that for ages. And its a survival scenario. Or simply do it like me and grow tons of potatoes, pumpkins and parsnips. Throw them in a dry cool area and arrange them so they can ''breathe''. Problem solved.

I have the offline installer (.apk file) for this app on my phone and tablet. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.servalproject&hl=en_USMade by the red cross, to help your phone communicate with other devices if/when you can't reach a tower. Uses your phones wifi/bluetooth adapter, instead of its cell signal. And it can let you keep using your phone number for communication too. Pretty neat imo.

Paul Harrell talks about how to select a practical knife that'll foster program compliance (ie something you can take with you regularly). A knife being one of the most important pieces of gear you can have in survival.

On creating and using a sling, which takes a bit of practice to gain proficiency with, but is a weapon with virtually unlimited ammo.
For your carpentry needs, a drill.
And lastly, for wood and tree chopping, a stone axe.

Chemical and Biological attack survival. Couple of things the video forgot to mention: When you decontaminate never use hot water, hot water opens the pores in your skin and makes it easier for you to absorb the chemicals. Also never use chemicals that make your skin softer, it does the same thing. Straight soap is the best thing. When you put a rag over your mouth to decrease the amount of chemical agents you inhale, piss on it before you put it over your mouth. The nitrate in the urine helps binding many chemical agents and it works quite well. People did that in WW1 before they got good gas masks. If you have been exposed to chemical agents so severe you need decontamination cut off your hair completely, it traps stuff like nothing else on your body. Try your best to cover your eyes as well, eyes have open blood vessels and will absorb most chemical agents quite well delivering them directly into your bloodstream.

Another thing that vid didn't elaborate on are the most potent of chemical agents, nerve ones. Nerve agents like VX can enter the body through the skin and it only takes a drop the size of on Lincoln's eye on a penny to kill an adult human and it sticks around in an area long enough to be used as an area denial weapon.
Here's a vid on how to survive a nerve agent attack in a military context.

Yeah nerve agents is one of those things you cant really do much about, you only realize its being used when either your buddies start to cramp violently and die or when you start to cramp and die. Its like a sharpshooter hidden far away in the bushes, you only know there is a sniper when its too late for you.
Also non-skin contact chemical weapons are usually combined with skin going agents that cause you to vomit, that way you have to take off the mask to prevent drowning in your own puke and that is when the chemical agent gets into your lungs and kills you anyway. Pretty much all chemical agents should be considered skin-going nowadays.

I use aluminum foil to preserve most foods for camping trips, I find because of the not so perfect seal the food can ''breathe'' a little and stays tastier longer, food in plastic bags with perfect seals kind of start to get super moist from the condensation, especially things like cake and bread. Just my experience.

Just my experience. These products are pre freeze dried and have desiccant bags in them so they do no get any moisture in them. You just add water (hot or cold depending on what the dish is) and re seal the bag and wait for about 8 minutes. Not required for short term hikes but can come in handy for longer multi night hikes because they are so light.

Yeah nerve agents is one of those things you cant really do much about The way to really do anything about them is to prevent them from interfering with neuromuscular junctions, or the brain's pathways to the muscles and nervous system. Which is basically impossible, we'd pretty much have to make an entirely new race of human beings from the ground up for those tailored features, nerve agents are horrible like that. Pity, but the solution four decades ago is still the solution now, sealed containment and hard suit And hoping to God that you have enough time and enough warning to get it on. I had to do a few nerve drills back in the Army when we were prepping for the invasion of Iraq, and the quickest I could get into my suit was about 6 minutes(With help and a buddy checking the seals), and note this was full hazmat gear.

Survival 101. No matter what kind of survival situation, find:
Shelter Water Food and equipment
In that order. Exposure can kill over night, dehydration in a few days, hunger in a few weeks.
Weapons might need to be high on the list if it's a world wide event...

As far as a weapon in prep for a post-apoc scenario, nothing beats a pistol or rifle in .22lr. The ammo is cheap, readily available and can be bought in large quantities. It'd be useful for hunting all sorts of small game, from squirrels, rodents, cats, small/medium sized dogs, etc and with the right shot placement, not too shabby for anti-personnel work.
That and a knife of course.

It'd be useful for hunting all sorts of small game, from squirrels, rodents, cats, small/medium sized dogs, etc and with the right shot placement, not too shabby for anti-personnel work. That and a knife of course. Personally, I think the 12 gauge shotgun is the best survival tool of them all simply because of ammunition variety, it is both the best hunting tool and also the best defense tool. With shotgun slugs you can hunt the heaviest game and also defend yourself from dangerous game and people and even stop cars or shoot through light cover, depending on the type of slug. Heck, I have some really hot hardened steel slugs. With slugs you can also reach out to 100yds which is plenty for most hunting scenarios, an attacker hit with a shotgun slug will be instantly out of the fight and will most likely die very quickly, with bird-shot or smaller shot you can hunt any kind of small game and even foul which will be your main food source in tough times. You cannot do that with a rifle. Also a shotgun can be used as breaching tool, in various tests the shotgun slug is the only round that will reliably remove a big lock, shoot door hinges off and blow door locks out the other side. Another advantage it has is the shells are reloadable, so if you have a reloading kit the 12 is even more effective, you can also load a variety of stuff into 12 gauge shells so chances are very high you have some kind of projectile. Heck, I have seen people casting lead slugs directly from hex nuts and the flew pretty good. Shotguns can also be had in a variety of packages, are legal to own in most countries, the ammunition can be found everywhere, shotguns often come in reliable effective packages. The only downside is the bulk and size of the ammunition, which is only an issue if you have to leave and hike around, but you should only leave your home behind in the most dire situation, and if you do with buddies that help carrying ammo. Ideally you stay at home, make it the base of your operations and you carry a 9mm pistol, have a scoped .308 rifle and a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Try it out, imagine yourself in various situation with a 12 gauge pump shotgun and a loadout of slugs, small shot and buckshot. I cannot think of many scenarios where you wish you had a different kind of weapon. Only long range engagements come to mind, but thats hardly a survival scenario situation.

Addendum: having said that the 12 gauge is the best survival weapon, in theory it is - practically the best weapon is the one you have the most training with of course. In a dangerous scenario ALWAYS grab the weapon you are most familiar with and have the most practice with, even if you have functionally more effective weapons available. Best scenario of course is having lots of practice with your shotgun.

Every improvised weapon, and really any stick/knife weapon, uses the same basic attack and defense principles.
Understanding the bo, you will find that you become competent to a fair extent with any handheld weapon that is not a gun.
A walking stick, depending on material, can be a bo in a pinch and do work. Even if it is a lightweight aluminum ski pole, you have some vectors of attack where it is quite effective.
Go into your backyard and swing a stick around like a kung fu chicken for a while. Do some of the silly fancy things you see in the movies. Then think about them, determine practicality and situational application, and work on it.
For me, the weapon I learned to use best was the nunchuku. I was always fascinated by Bruce Lee, and wanted to do fancy shit and be impressive. Ego...
I was never that good doing nunchuk tricks, still am not. Most of them have little application in a real fight unless you are defending a sword attack, which just doesn't happen a lot these days. So, I stopped worrying about being fancy, and started swinging the thing like I meant business. This resulted in many bruises, lumps on the head, and eventually an understanding of momentum, recoil, and swinging for the fence without knocking myself out AND having a defensible posture after the attack.
Martial Art is more about practice than it is having a great teacher or lineage. It is a personal thing, and while you will benefit from instruction you can learn a great deal on your own. And, it is definitely a survival skill.
