I wouldn't expect too much. I forsee that the relationship with the family will be rigid and static. Maybe that's because my expectations of the game aren't that high.

I'm a bit more hopeful myself that there'd be some variety in the relationship possibilities especially with the talk of dynamic relationship and the possibility that the father has a role that goes beyond dying early in the game.

I'm terrible at judging these kinds of things but the Ryder siblings look and sound to be in their twenties. We do have customization so the player character can likely look as old as the player please. Hilariously, Hawke could look older than his own mother like he was in his eighties.

I'm still holding out for it being done like in Fallout 4.

I had a thought I once posted about doing something as a homage to Mass Effect 1 by doing something similar to the profile reconstruction: Ryder is being brought of cryogenic suspension and the character customization happens because it is the computer searching for Ryder among the pods and uses the profile to verify Ryder's identity. If it holds true that Ryder is the first one to wake up then the same could apply to her father except it's Ryder creating his profile to search for him. Just something I thought was unlikely but neat.

I'm not particularly keen on having an emphasis on family. It can be used as a shortcut to emotional engagement without actually earning it, which doesn't always work for me. And it tends to mean there'll be a lot of assumptions about your character and how they interact with their parents

Also it probably means we don't get a choice of backgrounds.

The lack of background is almost surely, at this point. At least the one related with the family, maybe the professional one (like the WH, SS And Ruthless) might be customizable.
I do hope that they'll allow us a bit of freedom in defining the family relationships.
