I don't know what's so wrong about any of that if it's done well.

You had two siblings and a mother. The father is long dead. One of the siblings always dies in the prologue and the mother always dies in the second act. The other sibling either dies or is absent for much of the game past the first act.  Some people thought it got old, some thought it was wasted potential and even some thought the mother's death was avoidable because of something in the previous acts.

Your family having the option to survive the plot would actually quite the novelty in a BioWare game.

 You're family survives in Mass Effect 3.

There are three pre-service backgrounds with the Spacer's wherein the mother is alive but here it seems there's one background which would be the same as with Dragon Age 2.

 Kalah and Hannah Shepard were also arguably the exceptions until Dragon Age: Inquisition which left a lot of the Inquisitor's past for the player to select through options or through headcanon.

Note: the Colonist's family is wiped out in the attack on Mindoir and the Earthborn's parents are never mentioned or acknowledged as far as I know.
