LOOK AT THE LEVEL DESIGN. There are huge chasms on either side of Ryder. He HAS to go forward. Then there are huge doors that are like "look here! Come through here! Touch me!"
This is so different from Inquisition where it's like "la la la wide open space, you can go southeast. You can go northwest. Oh look what is this? Southwest? Oh, let me pick these weeds to the north. Wait, what are we going again? What is the point of this area? Huh?"

I would also like to mention that in Inquisition, they did not make some huge statement on the primary audio channel (I don't know what you call that when you hear audio more clearly and loudly than some NPC in the distance who clearly sounds like they're in the distance which renders whatever they say as annoyingly unimportant) whenever they picked up or examined an elfroot. Notice that Ryder and the VO person make comments on the primary audio channel regarding the plant he scans. It's not just collecting elfroot. It's not.
I hope they don't add like 5,000 of them at every step thereafter for him to collect, mind you.

what is it with the fear of BW delaying the release of ME:A? I am quite confident that it will be released EARLY 2017 (and not christmas - after DA:I I don't think they'll make that mistake again ) and even their new website states "early 2017" EDIT: and yes, I am at least moderately excited ^^

That 4k trailer has been giving me DAI flashbacks so my hype level is lukewarm. I'm interested in learning more but I'm not all that excited about the release. I will say that if the game only ends up being as good as DAI storywise but has combat like ME3 it'll be better by virtue that DA combat is about as boring as it gets to me.

excited? more curious to be honest. Excitement for me would be getting the Bioshock Remasters. Skyrim remasters with all dlc and mods. Maybe even (if they decided to do it) a mass effect trilogy remaster. My feelings for MEA are that since it is kind of an unknown at present i'm simply curious as to how they are going to pull it off.

Like that happened for DAI? Oh wait, it didn't. It was mostly gallivanting "ancient" areas too and discovering lore. Granted, they'll have to try harder to screw up shooter combat. They already stumbled on a workable model, unlike DA. But I still don't see any basis for interesting conflict here. No guys, they DID have combat in the 4K clip. Look at the end. Scanning the plant, the V/O talking about "wow I was just scratching the surface" - these are all LEADING UP TO the combat. Building up suspense and precedent for the combat. Inquisition had none of that. It's clearly more corridor-like. While I understand people don't like corridors all the time... honestly I think it works for Bioware because it helps them focus on the story. Witcher 3 kind of has large sprawling open areas, but then when you get into story-intensive "dungeons" (scripted areas with a combination of combat and cut scenes) it is more like a corridor level. So yes I would say even TW3 uses corridors. In Inquisition you did not have constant voice-overs of what's going on. Ryder was making comments about what's happening. All these things help guide you toward the focus of what's going on: their encounter with whatever they're fighting at the end. I don't have anything against corridors. In DAI, about the only thing I liked was the Fallow Mire. The rest is shit. It's the only thing that plays like a game. Which I'm afraid they've slowly lost sight of. I'm afraid for it here, with all the gushing about exploration.

The Ryder comments just seems like an exploratory focus. Like I'm playing sci-fi archaeologist. I know that was part of Mass Effect too, but it's the angle I never cared for.

Explicitly showing main antagonists and combat will reveal plot and antagonists they are keeping secret right now. They couldn't show the face of the angle you like. But the elements I pointed to are evidence of a different angle.

I'm excited. I liked the new trailer, the graphics, the environment and how the player character moved. I really didn't expect we'd get much anything from Playstation meeting, so this was very positive surprise. I also liked that we got a little more information about Ryder and the family. So nice going!

I'm afraid for it here, with all the gushing about exploration. Yeah, Fallow Mire was good but I also thought Crestwood was good and showed Bioware could do a reasonable job of storytelling in an open environment. Unfortunately the other several areas were just empty areas lacking in much of interest and you just grind and grind and grind in combat. And I too am super worried at all the exploration talk. I think Bioware should stick to a balance of combat and storytelling and can do a good job if they don't subscribe to more is better...because it's only better if the story elements are paced well with the combat. Exploration should really be nothing more than an optional side venture separate from the main storyline. The way to make exploration fun is to have each environment have it's own little story in the way Crestwood had.

But the elements I pointed to are evidence of a different angle. I guess we'll see. I see your point at least... DAI did the same thing though, with it's early videos. Showing off the world, in a passive sort of way. That's what they care about now. And that's what the game eventually revealed itself to actually be. That said, I'm more optimistic about combat compared to DA, because it's hard to screw it up... they have something good going already. Whether I have a good reason to do any of it is another thing.

There is a lot of hype for this game and rightly so for fans of Mass Effect since it's more Mass Effect. Still, I can't shake this feeling that so much of the hype is strictly for hype's sake. It looks so great, it's fantastic, it's frostbite, 4K, whatever and frankly everything I have seen has just been sort of meh. OP makes a very good case for her excitement over the game and if you're excited too, great. I'm happy for you. I'm not about to judge the whole game on what little we've seen, but at the same time I just can' get excited about it. I wish I could.

We shall move from planet scanning to plant scanning, ha. If one truly wished to know my opinion, I suppose I could say that it was okay... At least for what was shown. The only problem I had with it, is the character movement animations. Something felt wrong with the body animations, but I do know what it is. The asari running at the end looked like a gorilla trying to chase after a banana. I really really hope that is not a final run animation for females. Got enough of the hunchback bowlegged running in DAI. I'm not super excited, but I am very much looking forward to seeing more of the game, especially combat. As much as I enjoy exploring/scanning type of things, the combat needs to be good too, or I'll get bored quick.

I'm trying not to be. What we know of the game is that it's focusing on the bit of Mass Effect and sci-fi I'm most lukewarm too, exploration. Not to mention I kinda hate still that this game won't be set in the milky way I know and love.
But it's still Mass Effect damn it. That will always interest me. Then there's the sibling story that's intriguing me. This game could be the Dragon Age 2 that Bioware always wanted to make.

I'm excited: I like the premise, I like the idea of an inexperienced protagonist, I like exploration, I like the idea of the unknown, I can see the potential in family if done properly and I like what we've seen so far.
I may have loathed the endings of the trilogy but I still wanted to see the franchise continue, I still think there's good stories to be told in the Mass Effect universe and I still have faith and confidence that the developers can tell them.
I am moderating my hype but I do that for every game I'm interested in for multiple reasons including to prevent the game from being incapable of living up the impossible image I've built of it.

Same here, super excited, and there's little to no reason not be excited about it. I expected nothing in that PS event and we got SO MUCH. I was amazed by some of the responses here, as Jos says, all of the criticism is welcome but some stuff here...not a constructive critique at all.
I just hope Sony doesn't completely own the marketing for it now (like EA Battlefront) cause I wanna see some sweet PC gameplay before launch. Not overly enthusiastic by the "totally not CC" actor scanned Ryder's face for now, but there's time till the launch.

I will do my best to remain optimistic about the combat. Certainly after three games, BioWare must have some idea on how to perfect combat.

No guys, they DID have combat in the 4K clip. Look at the end. Yeah, in a cutscene. It wasn't actual gameplay though, which I can almost guarantee is what people want to see. Combat gameplay.
