Don't forget the ME1 Admiral Hackett audio brief before and after the missions. I liked also that there was some variety in the way it could play out. My favorite was The Negotiation, because it had a little bit of subtlety in it. If you actually came to an agreement with the Warlord, Hackett is clearly disappointed. He sent you in with the hope that you would kill everyone there. Sneaky bastard XD Hackett demonstrating what Renegade meant more than a lot of Renegade Shepard moments.

I don't mind being 'on rails' if the rails are taking me on a compelling journey. I agree with this 100%.
Regarding ME2/ME3/MEA side quests - you don't have to do them. ME2 recrutiment and loyalty missions - you can choose which missions you do or don't do and in which order. ME2/ME3/MEA main missions - has to be done in order.
So I don't understand the comment about ME2/ME3 being "on rails" but MEA is not?
In ME2/ME3 the content becomes available in batches, assigned by your superior (TIM/Hackett). Complete some specific (set of) something, and you're assigned another batch of stuff to do. ME2 takes it a step further when it interjects with the actual main story collector missions - for example, when it's time to go to Horizon, you can go nowhere else. ME3 piles up long sequences of non-optional cutscenes in between player controlled activity, and some optional content will disappear if not done by a certain point. In MEA, most of the content is discovered - via exploration or talking with various NPCs. There's a much broader variety of content that falls under the Pathfinder's purview and all contributes to the Pathfinder's overall goals. ME2/ME3 led me by the nose through the specific journey it wanted me to have, the way it wanted to deliver it. MEA gave me the tools to create my own very compelling journey.
