It's appeared in the E3 2016 trailer and not just in the opening shot as far as I can remember. It can be seen flying on the desert planet. My mistake. Had forgotten that.... The desert scene is easily missed especially since there's a black tornado and a sandstorm in the same scene.

Or it could be just like I said, not meant for overnight missions. The Normandy had four floors. I don't think that this one is gonna any more than two. No crew bunks, no amenities, no fluff, maybe a doctor's closet, and a toilet. Oh, and a place for the Mako to launch from. That's about it. Also a possibility, I suppose. Though that'd tether us pretty tightly to the ARK mothership or a colony. Not exactly a good exploratory vehicle if you're not meant to last in it for more than 24 hours. And its clearly modeled after frigates like the Normandy, which were intended as scouting ships, meant for exploration ahead of the fleet/around the borders of a protected zone.

Maybe they left before ME2 and they created smaller ship, like the first Normandy.

My thinking is that we fly to a solar system, launch the Tempest from dark space, it flies in, gathers some intel with the same stealth systems that the Normandy had, then go back to the Ark to report on the planet. Whether it had oxygen, what the gravity was like, etc. Most of all, what the stealth systems will be used for is if there is any hostile alien life.

I think it's more likely the ship can work alone for prolonged periods of time (like the Normandy). Its probably safer to keep the Arc in a secluded location until you find a secure place to settle the colonists. Besides a ship that big probably consumes a lot of fuel and eezo to move so avoiding to use it without necessity would be the wisest course of action.

Really does look fighter Jet size. I'm sure it's just the perspective but there's still a possibility it could be a landing vehicle. Would make sense to be able to land on and leave planets with haste if need be.

Suddenly, I AM hoping it's smaller -- like, just enough space to carry the crew and science supplies -- and we jaunt back to a hub (maybe the Ark or a colony) to chat, resupply, and sleep. I kind of like the idea of a small, fast ship leading the way in exploration, without fish tanks or beds along for the ride.
But I'm majorly pulling for a grimy, small scale Mass Effect from Andromeda, so I'm a wee bit biased.
But it'd be so cool to drop, actually have to set up camp on a planet's surface, fly back for supplies, really feel like just going to the ship can't solve all your problems...

Looks around the size of SR1, I suspect same number of mid-size decks. Nothing as lavish as SR2

<<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> Do you really need to land a spaceship to use the Mako? Really Bio? Get your shyte together. Absolute top lel, this is what grinds your gears? BioWare taking a shit on their own lore is A-OK but the Tempest landing on planets to let the Mako disembark is grounds for complaints?

Flynn, once again said it is a New story. It's akin to a new Bond movie where Q gives him new gadgets. On the other hand, if it was another Shep game, then I would agree with you.

Hope that with the new engine the ship doesn't suffer from this problem. Same with the new Mako.

No defense turrets or anything on the Tempest as far I can see. No weapons on the Mako either, but that might be something you can customize.

Not that I'm opposed to coming in peace - my Ryder's gonna take a very Starfleet attitude towards the whole, 'first contact' thing, assuming the game lets her - but we can't really say anything about how well-armed Tempest might be from any of the pictures we've seen so far. I mean, look at either Normandy: I don't see any obvious guns. And yet: Oh, and since we'll be landing fairly often, something like this probably wouldn't go amiss, either:

Curious: both SR1 and SR2 have their Gardian lasers on the wings, but the Tempest lacks the same kind of structure.

If you don't mind my asking, where'd you find out that those structures were the GARDIAN lasers? Neither ship's ever shown firing anything from them, and I can't find/recall any instance of their purpose being described.

Maybe the Tempest will have a mini-me Thannix cannon similiar to what the SR2 had. It would odd the tempest not having any kind of weapons to defend itself if it were to come under fire from an unknown enemy.
