I know, I know - late to the party and all that. But while I wait for fixes to MEA I'm having some Bioware withdrawals and wonder if these older games are worth playing at all now? I understand graphics and combat may be very antiquated, but I'm after a good story and great characters, and can definitely get mods for things like graphics. So, just looking for thoughts about a first time playthrough in 2017 on these older games. Any advice appreciated

I have played kotor2 first time in 2013, before going into SWTOR. It was okay aging wise, and I loved the game itself.
have you played DA:O recently? If yes, and you could manage that, you might be able to get used to Kotor1 and 2. For kotor2 I think you will really benefit from installing restored content mod, as it makes story easier to understand and characters talk more, so you will have better experience.
I am not not going to talk about kotor1, as I found it very solid but not remarkable tbh and never replayed it, so I can't remember much.
If the games feel too dated, you can also try SWTOR as a single player campaign from starting world to corellia in a f2p mode or buy a sub on sale for a couple of months for a less restricted play.

It has been years since I played either one so I have no idea have they have aged, but if the price is worth if I would say give them a try. I loved both games and highly enjoyed them.

Of course. KOTOR 1 and 2 are some of the best games ever made. You may want to consider playing them on your tablet or phone, since the graphics are so outdated they hurt your eyes on bigger screens.

Absolutely, worth playing both of them. The steam version of KoToR II got a nice update recently with Workshop support and more, so i recommend that. Also install TSL Restored Content for KoToR II to get the full package.

I've just recently been playing through the first Kotor game in the last three weeks, looking to fill that gap ME:A left too - definitely worth it! Honestly it's easily shot to the top of my favourite Bioware games. The graphics and gameplay don't bother me too much (playing on Ipad), as I just played DA:O last year as well. It's very similar.
Definitely in the right place for good characters and good story, I find even the companions I was sure were going to get on my nerves, or be totally uninteresting, have grown on me. I haven't finished yet but have found the story well paced and engaging, and there's waaaay more content than I expected.
Definitely grab them, OP.

Playing 2 right now, first time running through it with the restored content mod. Enjoying it so far.
I would absolutely say these games are worth it.

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Yes, but unerstand the graphics are a decade old, the skill and combat systems are d20 based, and combat is essentially real time with pause.
And when you play KOTOR2, I highly recommend using the Restoration Mod.

I would definitely try them - they are some of my favorite games of all time. There will definitely be things that feel clunky and dated but I think the story and characters will more than make up for that.

I honestly think the graphics haven't aged poorly at all. There's something about them that I feel is ageless. The only thing that bothers me is how much of a hassle it is to get the first one to work on a modern PC, and the lack of modern resolutions.

The issue may be graphics but it aged nicely. The combat system is not action so it havent aged at all. If you ever played any DA game on tactical mode or NWN you will be ok. Character building honestly it is better than most of RPGs nowdays. You may need to find some third party software to run it on window mode( for better experience) as it dont have nowdays resolutions.

Most definitely. And if you have a gaming PC, get the PC versions so you can mod them and kill those annoying asshole NPCs when they inevitably piss you off with their snarky ass comments, lol.

I'm going to try KOTOR 2 again, i never got past the prologue. I completed KOTOR a few years back and enjoyed it but the controls and graphics are hard to get used to. (probably more so for people like myself who came into gaming late in life). Any other mods anyone would recommend? Edit: Is the Restoration mod recommendable on a first PT?

(probably more so for people like myself who came into gaming late in life). Any other mods anyone would recommend? Edit: Is the Restoration mod recommendable on a first PT? Hmm...this is a good question. I usually play games without mods my first time through, in part because I want to avoid bugs and conflicts. I loved KOTOR 2 warts and all when I played it on the original XBOX...even though I somehow managed to skip 3 planets and go straight to end game ill-prepared and ended up having the ending spoiled as a result. That said, there are some things that are annoying about KOTOR 2 that the restoration mod fixes. I think you might have a better opinion of and experience with the game if you play it the first time with the mod, especially if you think you might only have time or the interest to play it once. *I have only used the restoration mod with the original PC version of the game. I can't comment on it's compatibility with the most recent release. Thank you for the response. I think I am going the modded route because I'm not sure how many PTs I would do. I am probably giving SWOTOR a try after.

KOTOR 1 is a wonderful game. Sadly I cranked it up a while back and I found it had aged too much for me to deal with. So yes, it's wonderful, but Baldur's Gate has aged better.

Did the TSL RCM ever restore the droid planet? Yes, Droid planet was restored. One problem was while The Restoration Project found most of the voiceovers for the Droid planet still intact embedded within the code, some weren't. The parts of dialogue not recorded with professional voices. . .well, you can tell! Pretty awful. One of those things that look so easy until you try to do it. Not sure if Aspyr fixed that in the final makeover. Still, it was a major coup to finally have a complete game. As far as the OP, by all means do them both! Those are the two games against which I judge all others. Nothing has come close to me that provides such a sense of immersion. Of course, I haven't played all games, so there may be others. What I really liked was the ability to talk to your mates at almost any time, and they would respond, even if they didn't have much to say. Also, you can switch characters with squad members at almost any time. The different characters were clearly defined, unique, and each has a story to tell. Their attitudes are dependent on dialogue. Each world you visit has a unique storyline and environment (though you visit some of the same worlds in II from I, conditions have changed). Ambient music is superb in KOTOR I, less so in II. In short, Lucas brought cinematic production values to the game, and it shows. The only major criticism is with plot. In KOTOR I, the overall plot and ending was complete with a minimum of plot holes. Some say it was simple, which is probably true, but it seemed complex. KOTOR II is a different problem with plot. The first 2/3 of the game, it's coherent. The last 1/3 is problematic. But really, everything else is so well done, I considered the path to the ending only annoying not game-breaking. TRP could restore the "hidden" content, but of course, could not fix the ending. (Obsidian was only given 12 months to do KOTOR II, so ran afoul of the oft repeated justification of devs, they ran out of time and money to end it how they wanted to.) There are also a lot of mysteries and surprises which seem to be sadly lacking in modern games. Had hoped that with the community restoring hidden content and Aspyr redoing the coding for KOTOR II that they'd eventually do a KOTOR III, but that now seems unlikely. Whatever caused Disney to have Aspyr fix KOTOR II (after 10 years!) doesn't seem to be in play now. I hope you will have the same great experience I had lo these many years ago!

Whatever caused Disney to have Aspyr fix KOTOR II (after 10 years!) doesn't seem to be in play now. WHAT???!!! I didn't say that quite right. I had thought Disney asked Aspyr to recode it after they bought LA, but I guess it was the other way around, with Disney allowing Aspyr to work with the original code. Anyway, it all works smoothly together now: Restored Content with Aspyr's Windows/Game code updates. Why I included this was that it seemed to me at the time that maybe Disney would allow Aspyr to develop a KOTOR III. That never happened. Just wishful thinking on my part.
