My biggest problem with FC4 was the near-constant level of random encounters with killer eagles, hostages needing a rescue, and so on, to the point that I could rarely just go from Point A to Point B in the main quest without spending an hour getting sidetracked along the way. I've sometimes thought about giving FC5 a try, but I never got a good read on whether it had a similar proliferation of random encounters, and the premise of an entire American county turning into a war zone and a single sheriff's deputy tasked to deal with it seemed a little ridiculous.

Did Far Cry 5 have as many random encounters as Far Cry 4 (e.g. all the killer eagles diving out of the sky and the hostage rescue missions that kept popping up)? That was the main thing that made me sour on FC4 eventually - there was just too much happening at once and simply getting on with the story became near-impossible at times.

I don't think so. They were certainly less annoying if they were there because I did finish (and like) FC 5 while, like you, I got pissed at 4...mainly because of the constant animal attacks...and left.

I think "Help, that eagle is attacking!" pretty much became my least favorite phrase ever while playing that game. And since when do eagles dive out of the air and kill people anyway?
Is it me or do the FarCry games get stranger and stranger with each new entry? It seems that way at least.
This one seems less strange then FarCry 5.
Yea, that was my thought as well. This seems like just a logical setting for a Far Cry game, very much in progression with what they did before. Except this kind of setting also reminds me a lot of the Just Cause games.
I'm expecting a solid FC game but nothing really revolutionary in this one (so basically similar to what we've seen since FC3 or arguably even FC2).

It looks like we're back in the Jungle baby! FC3 is my definite favourite of all FC games because of the jungle and amazing soundtrack, though the story wasnt bad either in the end.

In Far Cry 3 they teased us by letting us indulge in the slaughter and showing us how corrupting and seductive the self-righteous adrenaline rush could be. In 4 they teased us by letting us fight for a deeply flawed resistance group and ended the game dropping the anvil that sometimes, the cure ends up worse than the disease. In 5, they teased us by ending the game illustrating that the villains had been right all along.
I was seriously hoping that with the next one, they would have the balls to go "Alright. Now you're fighting for the fucking dictator, protecting his interests and parroting his policies and slogans. See how that feels." But no, just a seemingly generic gender-neutral freedom fighter. Which is especially a shame because Antón would be the perfect villain for it. Charismatic and intelligent, able to defend his beliefs, and already written to accommodate a master-apprentice relationship.
Seeing the trailer, I'd much rather be playing that kid ten years hence as Giancarlo Esposito's General and heir, like they sorta teased that you could have in Far Cry 4 with Pagan Ming, than one of the random anarchists throwing fire at the riot police down below. Because by now it kinda sorta feels like we've been there before.
Also, just finished a Platinum run of the Far Cry 3 Classic Edition on the PS4 with all collectibles and outposts and trophies and whatnot. It's seriously one of the most exhilarating and atmospheric shooters I've ever played. 4 is much prettier, and 5 plays much smoother, but 3 is just... magical. Am looking forward to replaying 4 next, after The Last of Us Remastered.

I picked up FC5 and New Dawn in the recent Steam sale, and after about 10 hours in FC5 I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed and not sure I even want to bother finishing the game. Playing a "mute killing machine" character has never really been my thing, and I also feel like the game is really straining to justify the level of violence and mayhem in a way that the other FC games I've played didn't. In FC2 the player-character is an amoral merc-for-hire in the middle of a civil war, in FC3 you're a guy who's unraveling psychologically while fighting ruthless pirates and slavers, and FC4 is another civil war setting.
But it seems like we're supposed to believe in this case that this cult has somehow taken over an entire county and bamboozled the rest of the country into not knowing or caring what's going on there. Not only that, but their numbers are so huge that they have hundreds of foot soldiers who are armed to the teeth and hell-bent on killing the Deputy - even though it seems like the leaders would prefer to take the Deputy alive and force him/her to convert, and on two occasions I've been captured by the cult and met members who are at least capable of carrying on a conversation even if it's mostly fanatical ranting. The big action set pieces feel contrived, and too many times I find myself asking why the latest burst of gunfire is happening and unable to come up with an answer besides "because it's a video game."
Maybe this would make more sense if the apocalypse that Joseph Seed is preaching about had already happened, and the cultists and the resistance were fighting for control in the absence of any functioning government. But as something that's supposedly happening in what otherwise resembles the present-day United States, I just don't buy it. As for the action itself, I don't notice too many changes to the formula of FC3/4, to the point that I mostly feel like I've played this game before.

Replaying Far Cry Primal as I just find it so engaging. Certainly underrated as a series entry in my view.
I agree with you i had a lot of fun playing as Takkar and had a Sabertoooth as a pet and no other animal would dare attack you and that you could ride a Mammoth from time to time.
And i'm not sure if i buy FC6 because if the ending is as bad as in FC5 i'm definitely not going to buy the game.
Mass Effect Trilogy, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Jade Empire, Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, Mass Effect Legendary Edition
I wonder if we'll get a Far Cry game set in the near future. One where body augmentation and bioengineering becomes more commonplace. Maybe its me opining for something akin to Far Cry: Instincts. I know that game wasn't everyones favorite, but ever since I got the ability to use double jump in Far Cry: New Dawn, I just want that first-person superhero feel again.

I just read that Far Cry 6 will be released on the 6th of April.
I always wanted to ask this question SofaJockey but why was this thread taken away from me ?
Not sure I understand what you mean?
I don't think anything has been taken away from you?
If it's that the 'created by' tag is wrong, that could have happened when threads were moved around. I can fix that but only if I have a post artifact to work with. To do that, please create a new thread - call it 'Test for SJ' or something and tag me. I'll attach that property to this thread (should work)...

I’m liking the look of this and both the protagonist and antagonist.

Far Cry Instincts was a bloated and unforgiving werewolf fantasy retread with inadequate checkpointing.
The 'Escort Doyle' mission where your escortee literally runs into oncoming fire was a travesty.
Now on to Far Cry Instincts Evolution which is a rather predictable arcade style follow-up to FCI.
If the series would be judged on these 3 instalments, it's amazing anyone wanted there to be more, but we know things got better.
