Hmm, unpopular opinions...let's see what I got...
1) I really didn't mind the Mako too much. Maybe if it had some customizable paint jobs and upgrades like the Nomad it'd be better.
2) ME3 didn't have enough sadistic choices (not including that ending, that's just too sadistic).
3) I really don't give a crap about whether Ashley is racist or not. If she kills alien space-shrimps, killer robots and giant worms good, she's alright in my book.
4) I'd rather Bioware make a ME Trilogy prequel than continue down the Andromeda route.
5) Saren did nothing wrong.
6) Control and Synthesis could have been viable if there was proper build up to them. Maybe Cerberus succeeds in assuming direct control of a Reaper (i'm talking a Destroyer sized one at least), now that would be a powerful scene to make Shepard think its possible. Or have Shepard talk with the Geth or maybe an AI from a previous cycle about the cycle of violence between synthetics and organics to plant the idea that there must be some "middle ground" solution.
7) I actually like Jacob. I never got into liking Kasumi.
8) Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC, while entertaining, hurts the franchise.
9) I'm not against the War Assets system, just show don't tell Bioware.
10) I don't mind the Council not believing in the Reaper threat. As someone in the political sector, I can tell you denial of facts and threats is pretty common thing politicians and bureaucrats do when it suits them. Carbon pollution levels causing negative health effects? Deny it and blame it on something else. Giant space squids from darkspace want to destroy everything we know and love? Make some air-quotes and ignore.

I read through about 15 pages of this, and I'm no longer sure what qualifies as an unpopular opinion. I like Garrus, so I think that's unpopular in this thread, at least. Anyway, here goes: - Garrus is a better boyfriend than Kaidan
- "Romancing" Vega is creepy
- Neither Meer nor Hale were particularly good in ME1
- I always make sure Jacob dies in the suicide mission because I can't hear Brynne without hearing FemHawke, and I like my FemHawke too much to subject her to Jacob.
- I can see the flaws in the endings, but they've never bothered me.
- Thane and Kasumi are useless and annoying
- Regardless of Thane's usefulness, I love his death scene. Not because he died but because the prayer is beautiful.
- I never talk to Zaeed after I recruit him because I hate his stories.
- Ashley is the least interesting character in the ME universe
- I love the mentor/mentee relationship between Anderson and Shepard and play to it whenever the dialogue allows
- I think Cerberus could have been useful as an organization that advanced humanity's interests without being a terrorist organization.
- I'd be happy to have a Bioware game without romances.
- I wish we could have recruited the "not perfect" Krogan that Okeer made
- Neither Ashley nor Kaidan are worthy Spectres. For that matter, I'm not really sure Shepard is, aside from the backstory and proving Saren is lying.
- The Krogan didn't deserve the genophage, but they also didn't deserve to be uplifted. No cure for them.
- Tali has grown more and more unlikeable the more I've played the series.
- I don't have a problem with the original Council
- I don't think Shepard ever made a very strong case in ME1 that the Reapers were real, so it doesn't bother me that the Council never believed her.

Most of Shepard's responses to the Council are a tad overwrought, considering she has zero evidence.

Well, sure they believed it at the end, but what else are you going to do when a giant Reaper comes knocking on your door? Most of Shepard's responses to the Council are a tad overwrought, considering she has zero evidence. Shepard did have evidence but it ended up all getting wiped out. Vigil stopped functioning and the recovered pieces of Sovereign were too few (due to scavengers taking most of it) to be of any real value. Given what Shepard personally experienced, of course he's 100% sure and wondering why the Council doubts him. Now, the fact that he found a program that could take over the Citadel should have been evidence that Shepard did in fact speak to something on Ilos that gave him that control. If I go into ME2 and see how insignificant the geth are - Miranda is incredulous that Shepard is being wasted on them - or into ME3 where Shepard says something like "were you around when they declared the geth threat over" (badly misquoting but it's on Rannoch). It's clear that the geth were seen as a minor threat at this point. How, then, were they able to create something like Sovereign if they were that weak? Even if it used up their resources to do it, they would have retreated to Rannoch to start over rather than continue to fight. Things just don't add up. The Citadel Archives from the Citadel DLC outright acknowledge that the Council believed him - just not publicly. (MEA is someone inconsistent since it suggests the Council was starting to doubt their disbelief around the time of ME2.) I think a better explanation is what someone else said, which is that politicians refuse to acknowledge things that are politically inconvenient. If it'll cost taxpayers money, or they can't do anything about it (and will therefore look weak), they ignore it.

But I wonder how they can possibly keep it up. Millions have seen Sovereign's attack on the Citadel. But the Council says no, that was just a geth ship, and everyone just believes it? That's not how it works. In real life, people are much less credulous about lesser things than the attack of an outlandish 2km spaceship.

Anyway, more things that don't make sense: on Rannoch, we shoot the mini-Reaper in the eye with an ordinary turret, and it's instantly hurt and stumbles. "that seems to be a weak spot!" ...entire armies have been fighting these things for a while now, and no one has ever noticed that the eye is a weak spot?

That's not how it works. In real life, people are much less credulous about lesser things than the attack of an outlandish 2km spaceship. Probably because the solution to the problem is hard, if not impossible. And it's hard to admit there's a problem when you have one attack that includes Geth and then nothing happens for a long enough period of time that people forget. I can understand people forgetting or not wanting it to be true, because who wants to admit that an inevitable, galaxy-destroying event is on the horizon?

Everyone believing it's just a geth ship does make sense though. Other than the asari and whatever krogan are nearby, no one else has ever seen the geth before, so it would be easy and even logical to assume that Sovereign was a geth construct. It's certainly an easier sell than it being an immortal sentient starship from dark space.

The mystery of the appearance of Quarians is one of the most stupid things in the trilogy.
codex:
Oh rly?
In 300 years, is there no autopsy photo or something like that of a naked quarian in the extranet? Also, no one saw that movie, Fleet and Flotilla?

1. ME2 is the worst of the trilogy, as it pertains to the main plot. (It would have mattered more if your surviving squad played a larger role in ME3.)
2. The krogan will be a huge threat to the galaxy if they ever cure or adapt to the genophage. (Not only that, they wouldn't even be able to support themselves if they don't practice some form of population control.)
3. ME1 is still the best of the trilogy, in terms of storytelling. (This might be unpopular, I don't know.)
4. I think asari living for 1,000 years is dumb. And krogan living for longer than that (barring violence) is even dumber.
5. I like Kaidan more than Ashley and always pick him to live in ME1.
6. Miranda is bizarre looking; her butt is the only thing attractive about her.
7. Joker is annoying and I wish you could get another pilot.

Another unpopular theory I have:
ME2's greatest romance was Samara's "romance." Not because it was about more than sex, but because there was attraction and rejection. It also fit the music the best.

- Joker should have never been attracted to EDI and EDI should not have been considered a sentient being only because her programming had her imitate human emotions - There is no way you can justify destroying ships full of quarian civilians (including children) to save rebuildable robots because of mistakes made by their ancestors - Shepard's death in most endings at the end of the trilogy is actually a good thing about the ending - The Mass Effect Trilogy should have had unique protagonists for each game, not only Shepard - The aliens depicted in the games are extremely unrealistic and not creatively designed, as their bodies were obviously made to suit the game's combat system - Biotics are just a device to have space mages - There should have been four games instead of three with the third one concentrating on the Cerberus/rallying the alien species plot and the fourth one only about the reaper invasion - The Citadel DLC is both one of the best and worst things from Bioware i've ever seen - Kai Leng could have been a great sidevillain if he had been designed differently - Brooks was a more interesting villain than the Illusive Man - Shepard is only interesting if you headcanon a lot - After Shepard acquired the Reaper Iff there was no reason for Cerberus not just to send a whole army through the Omega 4 relay or just bomb the entire station - Garrus and Tali aren't intriguing characters - The final battle should have never been about earth - Jack is best character to romance for a male shep - Drell and Asari seem to have been designed as eye candy downgrading their credibility in the universe (with extra revealing outfits for either races) - all the games would have been cooler if only like 1% of characters had been human - Mordin is overrated - Anderson was somehow unlikeable throughout every game - None of the character deaths (with some exceptions) were affecting - Nothing of what comes out of Joker's mouth has ever been funny - Liara has the most character development which is odd for a member of a species living for thousands of years who are supposed to be more passive and observing - Keeping the collector base (even though you could for some reason not tell hackett and give it to the alliance) made much more sense - curing the genophage (before knowing the in-game consequences) should always be the right choice as even in a prolonged war with the reapers the krogans could effectively slow their advance and nothing keeps the salarians from just refusing you their fleets anyway - it would have been amazing if quarian heads actually looked similar to geth heads - morinth must be a one of the most interesting characters in the trilogy (though recruiting her would still be the worst decision ever) - Cerberus should have enforced a non-discrimination-policy on the normandy sr-2 after almost each of shepard's specialists got a whole room to live in while the rest of the crew had to sleep in like 4 beds lol

- curing the genophage (before knowing the in-game consequences) should always be the right choice as even in a prolonged war with the reapers the krogans could effectively slow their advance and nothing keeps the salarians from just refusing you their fleets anyway Reapers are not Rachni. The allied forces must build the Crucible ASAP (need of brains=Salarians), find the Catalyst ASAP and pray that it will work as intended. If the Reaper invasion turns into full scale attrition mode, the current cycle is already doomed. Refuse ending confirms it.

At least, I wasn't under the impression that Shepard believed that krogan or turians could do anything more than be a stopgap measure until the Crucible was built. I think, on leaving Earth, Shepard knew there was no hope. That only came when they found out about the Crucible. Therefore, throw absolutely everything and anything you can in front of the enemy while the real solution is being put together.

I don't hate Garrus, but I don't get why he's the most amazing character ever. His arc and growth pretty much started and ended in ME1. That said, I don't get it with Varric in DA2 either. Maybe "this is your bro" type of characters aren't for me, especially if they are forced like Garrus.

I don't find Asari attractive. Their colour puts me off, as do the slightly scaly skin and the tentacles. I find ME1 Liara cute, but that's more to do with her personality and interests. Call me old-fashioned, but I'll stick to Ashley and Jack as love interests.

He could have been a human 'cowboy cop' called Gary and nothing about his character would have had to change".

It's almost like [strokes nonexistent beard] his personality has nothing to do with his race. Which is good. Unlike, say, Tali, who is a walking Quarian codex in ME1 with almost no personality of her own. (And for the record, I never like Garrus in ME1.)

Heh, you say that — and I understand exactly what you mean — yet she was still my favourite NPC when I first played ME1. The way she was acted might have had something to do with it, I liked how her demeanour came across. That cheerful "see you later" when Shepard ends a conversation with her is something that I remember drawing me to her. The information about the quarians that her "walking quarian codex" nature provides was the start of my "zomg quarians" fandom too, I remember appreciating the sense of community and togetherness that she describes in ME1.

I read an opinion (not my own) a few months ago in another thread along the lines of "Garrus is cool and all, but there's nothing about him that requires him to be a turian. He could have been a human 'cowboy cop' called Gary and nothing about his character would have had to change". Sounds about right. If anything, he's sort of a "rogue" turian. They're all about duty and following orders. Pure Paragon. Garrus, in contrast, cares less about the rules and more about getting things done. It's why he clashed with C-Sec. He comes off more like how the game portrays humans. For the record, I have liked Garrus from day 1 and have continued to do so. I loved the relationship you could build between BroShep and Garrus by ME3. Citadel DLC really helped with it, too. I would consider Shepard and Garrus to be bros.
