I know there's a LI thread buried somewhere in here, but I wanted to start a thread about what people think the relationship system is going to be. BW said it was going to be more 'organic' than previous games, building not only romances but also friendships.
I know romance isn't everyone's cup of tea, so in that case, how do you think friendships among squad mates will be played out?
If their definition of organic is DAI, then I will be fairly disappointed. As much as I adored the Cullen romance, it too felt formulaic and a bit forced.
So what do you think? How will they make it more organic?

Ideally something like Persona 4 but that's never going to happen, nor it should. I honestly believe the best we'll get is a refined DAI system to get approval for our every decision to influence both friendship and romances. I think that's fine as long as it's completed with more meaningful squad quests (not collect/kill x amount of y ) and more interesting characters. I liked that in DAI, companions can genuinely hate your guts but most were so flat I couldn't care less about them. Even Cullen is basic as hell. A dashing basic, but still As long as they're great characters, the romances would be worthy.

I'm sure there will be relationships with them like there was in ME3 Don't know. I will worry about that when I get to that point in game

A dashing basic, but still As long as they're great characters, the romances would be worthy. DAI's approval system seemed so arbitrary. I remember a point early in the game, when interacting with Cassandra as a mage, one of the dialog options caused a pop up that said "Cassandra Disapproves" but her response was to agree with you and say she was impressed with your outlook on things. I think Bioware's declaration of it being a more organic relationship system is really just posturing on their part. In order to establish meaningful and truly organic relationships the game would have to be 100's of hours long and have almost an unfathomable amount of dialog. Anything short of that and it just won't feel right and ultimately come off as kind of gimmicky haha. Anyway, I have no problem with how ME1, 2 and 3 handled it in the past and wouldn't mind it being the same.

I'm guessing it will be a more refined version of the friendship/rivalry system.

I would like a girl to make the first move. While I am typing this out, I am also wondering, what would female pick-up line be... Probably the same as a guy's pickup line? From some articles I read earlier this year, and that huge post floating around on Reddit and Tumblr: -Friendships and romances will take into account character temperaments. Some may be harder to talk to. -Romance won’t be limited to checking in a few times, then getting a romance scene. -There will be companions with 'loyalty’ missions and new ways to get to know them -The order in which you do quests/talk to people may also influence opinion of you and humanity It mostly seems like their take on organic relationships is adding in more variables. Similar to the DA:I approval system, but with a different approach.

One thing I liked about DAI's romance system was that it was very much 'opt in'. So you couldn't get ninjamanced just by being nice to someone. If you were saying something 'romantic' the game made it very clear that you were being romantic. So I'd like to see them stick with that.
I also remember one of the devs (probably a DAI dev) mentioning that they wanted to do bit more with gating romances to plot-points, similar to how the Iron Bull romance didn't really kick off until you'd killed a dragon. That sort of thing might be interesting to see.

>Flirt >Sappy talk with stupidshit reason why we cant/shouldn't bang >We'll bang okay? >concerns ignored. Bang just before final mission. >repeat x2.
Best way to keep it "organic" is to keep it confined to "organics". If I see another disgusting robosexual who isn't wearing their straight jacket, I'm shooting the tube out of spite (again).

My guess is the romance will be woven into the story ala femshep/Garrus in ME3 where there are slight dialogue changes w/in normal conversation if Ryder is romancing someone.

That sort of thing might be interesting to see. wait, the romances were plot-gated? I know they couldn't properly start until you completed their companion quests and got to Skyhold (at least as far as I remember), but my Inquisitor was riding the Bull way before she ever got around to killing a dragon, lol. He hit on her as soon as his Qun/Tal-Vashoth plot was done, so I always assumed they were approval based, aside from the obvious traditional companion quest requirements. Still, IA that could be neat to see implemented in MEA. Anyway, honestly, I wouldn't hate the return of the ninjamance as long as you could easily cut it off as soon as it popped up (and the scene or dialogue indicating the romance has been triggered were just flirty, not full-blown "I want to collect your eyelashes" or whatever poor Leliana did, since that's, uh, a little jarring.) If Bioware truly is trying to make the romances more organic, well, people develop crushes if you're repeatedly nice to them, or they take things the wrong way, and sometimes you aren't always the person initiating flirtation, yk? I liked that about DAO and ME1, I was always sad they dropped it in favor of giving all control over to the player. I honestly found it kind of charming, lol. But obviously ymmv, I know tons of players absolutely hated getting ninjamanced and even if I didn't, I can understand why. As to OP's original question, no clue. I have no idea what Bioware's conception of 'organic' is, or what their execution of that would be. I tend to think it'll be just a refinement of DAI's system, which is a shame because I honestly wasn't overly impressed by it, nor did I find it particularly natural feeling (as much as that can be achieved in a video game) especially with the weird lack of cutscenes for many conversations, but who knows.

But obviously ymmv, I know tons of players absolutely hated getting ninjamanced and even if I didn't, I can understand why. At this point I'm not super certain if they DID actually plot-gate them, or if they just mentioned wanting to plot gate them. I wouldn't mind getting ninjamanced if the other character was like 'Hey! I'm into you!' like with Anders in DA2, who I think was the only character Bioware have done that would actively hit on you (outside of maybe Zevran?) I really liked that. But... a lot of people didn't. I think it'd be nice to not have everything be up to the player, but I don't want to lose approval with someone just because I was friendly to them and then they started drawing our names inside hearts in their notebook (looking at you, Alistair...).

it will play out as it does in all games. You'll have a few scarce intimate and committed interaction and then you'll come across your LI and he/she will splurt out the most inane, mundane comment like he/she's talking to the neighbor.

Not quite how I expected this thread to go... but I personally think that relationships will be more organic in the way that you will have romantic interaction outside of dictated cut scenes and PC initiated dialog. What do I mean by that? I mean that there will be romantic banter in mission, on board, on passing by the NPC, etc. I felt, like with the Kaidan romance, unless you talked to him specifically, he wouldn't say much romantic shtuff and even when you brought him on missions it was the standard banter, noting nothing of your relationship. That's just what I think.
