So I started a new playthrough after taking a break

So I started a new playthrough of MEA after taking a break from it for a couple of months. Now I have been pretty critical if it mainly from comparing it to the trilogy. But last night as I was finishing up my first trip to EOS and establishing Prodromos I realized I was having fun dammnit. Of course the patch has helped but still the base game is still pretty damn fun. Which leads me to believe that while much of the constructive criticism is valid at the same time this game is a victim of the internet hate mob. The damn meme posters have been wanting to bring this franchise down for years. If this game had been simply called Andromeda with all the ME references taken out (meaning none of the other MW races would be in it and references to the alliance were not in the game etc...) and it was made by a different dev then it would have not been attacked so aggresively. It angers me that their are people that downright have an agenda against this IP.

I agree and right now I am trying a new game myself, but I put a few restrictions on myself to try and keep my Completionitis in check. I am having more fun then my first game because I am not suffering from the boredom of going across the entire planet just to scan that one item for a quest.

Don't forgot that your new PT started after A LOT of patching. Probably everyone who started to play on day 1 and who will start to play again today will notice a VERY BIG difference. Of course there was too much hatred, but we are talking about Mass Effect - everyone who go thru ME3 ending neverending discussions knew that it will happen again. And it did.
You are happy with MEA - so it's fine.

I think another couple of months of polish might have made a huge difference to how it landed...

I am not sure. It might have made some difference with the animations, but any of other complaints I don't see being resolved since those seem to be of a nature that isn't really a bug or lack of development.

Well, I've been saying they should just call it Shmass Effect: Andromeda since before release. It would have instantly made the story that much less weird.

I agree, it is a fun game, OP. I think a lot of the "hate" - just like with ME3 - comes from the fact that it didn't quite live up to it's potential more than it actually being a bad game. Often, disappointment cuts much deeper than straight up disapproval.

Of course it has been a victim of cheap youtube memes and they brought that onto themselves with their Origins Access promotion. I also had fun on my first playthrough and always stressed it's a good game but not something extraordinary. That's probably down to what you expect from a game like that. The combat dynamics are pretty good, better than in any previous ME games, but the story and the characters fail to keep me on edge. That's what I'm looking for in a game like that and that's also why I agree with the 71 rating the magazines gave the game. It's good, it's above average, but it's not something I'm itching to replay or some game of the year material. They created an excellent framework, but in too many aspects they failed to fill that framework with life.

Absolutely, the hate train that exists (and it does, don't be fooled. Ah... where is your tinfoil cap, by the way?) is real, but if the game had waited for patch 1.05 or even 1.08, the memes would be altogether different. The amount of hate thrown at the game would've come from opinionated members of YouTubes and not random folks who saw an opportunity to get some clicks. Andromeda, to me, was a shift from Unreal to Frostbite. That's it. Andromeda as a whole is a fun, good game. Does it have memorable characters? Yes. Does it have a good story at its core? Yes. However, the lack of polish, the broken game at start (it was broken for the PS4) and EA's terrible marketing just set up this title and the developers for failure. The DLC, if given an opportunity, will make Andromeda less of a 7 (in my opinion) and more deserving of an 8 or even an 9 if more than one substantial DLC (like Inquisition had) comes out to support it.

I actually think that even if MEA was released with the state of the patch 1.08, the internet still wanted the game to fail, it just would have less arguments to bash it and facial animation were just really quite visible for the general audience, so the clickbait was easy to do around it. MEA had so much going against it, it had the controversy of manveer heir, the sjw conspiracy, the ME 3 ending, it also needed to live up to the ME trilogy. Any youtube comments section was a toxic wasteland.

Reminder : I am not speaking about the people who actually play the game and explain why they disliked it and made constructive criticsm about it, I am speaking about the one who just judged the game based on the meme and said it was shit based on bad facial animation alone.

The game itself is far from being perfect and true it should have been delayed to fix animation and bugs, but the bashing around it has been way over the top.

For me their Origins Access approach did it in. Far as I remember, they refused handing early review copies to serious reviewers, but made the first ten hours available to everyone subscribing to Origin Access. That was a sure way to invite every wayward youtuber to make fun of it in order to make a few dime by slapping the label MEA on their videos. You virtually see some of them not even having three videos to their accounts, only viewed by a couple of dozen of people. The MEA one, the on with the memes, got tens of thousands.

Failed PR strategy and a premature release did most of the original damage.
