"Hey - I'm Jason Schreier, an editor over at Kotaku. I've seen a lot of posts on this subreddit about my report last month that BioWare Montreal was scaled down and that Mass Effect is on ice. I've seen a ton of you guys say things like "Kotaku clickbait" and "Kotaku is exaggerating what happens at every studio" so let me clear a few things up, based on conversations I've had with several people who know what's going on over there: 1) As far as I know, BioWare Montreal did not expect to be scaled down after they finished Andromeda - they expected to work on a sequel right away. This was not the sort of standard development downsizing or cycling you'd normally see at a game studio. From everything I've heard, most people at BioWare expected Mass Effect to continue immediately after Andromeda launched. The controversial reception to Andromeda DIRECTLY changed things. This was not "business as usual" -- that was the point of my article. 2) My understanding is that the studio has been completely gutted. I've heard that there are dozens and dozens of empty computers as people have moved, or left, and I expect more people to depart the studio this month. It's really sad."
- If you go to the BioWare Montreal website right now, there are exactly zero job openings, while Austin and Edmonton have dozens of job openings available. www.bioware.com/en/careers/?locations%5B%5D=43#job-listings
- Looking at their past job openings for 2015+2016, there wasn't one instance where there were zero job openings. web.archive.org/web/20160715000000*/http://www.bioware.com/en/careers/?locations%5B%5D=43

Looks to me like whining that not enough people are taking his claims at face value, then repeating those exact same claims with no new evidence as if it will somehow be different this time.

I'm not sure whether the intention is to repeat Jason's ego trip/tantrum (as opposed to his relatively straight-laced original article) or to make out that a studio that isn't hiring as many people in the aftermath of a game release as it would while it was in development somehow means the sky is falling. But I'll give it a troll score of 4/10 for making old material go that much farther.

"Whining", "ego trip/tantrum"?
I hope that some day, when the turmoil of the MEA release is a distant memory, some some members of this forum have the good sense to be embarrassed regarding their totally unwarranted treatment of Jason Schreier.

I hope that some day, when the turmoil of the MEA release is a distant memory, some some members of this forum have the good sense to be embarrassed regarding their totally unwarranted treatment of Jason Schreier. Whoa dude, easy on the hero-worship. As I said, his original article was good. But his follow-up - where he appears to spit the dummy over the very idea anyone would question his article, repeats the same stuff using the same anonymous sources he originally used, laces his claims with get out clauses ('there is no DLC coming but I'm not actually sure'), then finishes it off with some weird passive-aggressive point about the definition of clickbait then literally invites you to click on his story again directly below it is not the kind of thing that warrants respect. It doesn't even matter whether he's right or wrong, or if he's just guessing. This isn't behaviour of a man who is content to stand by his article. I wasn't really sure what his angle was until I read he's got a book coming out. But hey, he's feeding the bandwagon, who the hell am I to question him, amirite?

This stuff again? For the 2327253437219th time? Come on - Can you try at least to be a small tiny bit original? This is just utterly lazy. And no - I don't buy it. They do not need new people because: a. All those people that are relocated to pick up the work for Anthem will return when that work has finished. b. If all those computers are still standing there unused, that means they will be used again later on (otherwise they would have been completely removed). c. You don't need a full crew for the DLC and bug hunting. All assets are mostly generated, so the core hard work is done. And lastly - Unless you have been at those studio's and looked inside in person, you have completely no idea if those rumors are true or not. You have no bit of hard evidence. Only second or even third hand rumors from unreliable sources. Also taken in consideration that you (suikoden) seem to post nothing but negative and insulting stuff, you seem to have a clear agenda. I understand that you want to see Bioware and ME:A crash, and do the best you can to make that obvious to everybody in this forum. But sometimes it gets boring to see that same thing, same thing, same thing, same thing, over and over again. I give you a troll score of 2/10, because you are simply not creative enough. Try something fresh and new and maybe you will climb to 3/10 or even (but don't hold your breath) 4/10. Keep trying (but not too often if you don't mind)...

Bioware Montreal is still staffed and is still updating ME:A.
If studio is about to be closed, EA would have said so in advance like they always do.
In other words, no. Bioware Montreal is NOT shut down and is NOT getting shut down any time soon. Also Bioware Edmonton never hired anyone during ME3 DLC development. They did hire during ME2 DLC development, but that was related to porting ME2 to PS3.

I don't have a bone to pick with this guy, what he says may be true, may not be. I wouldn't take EA's word on anything though. I can't be the only one who worked for a publicly traded company where executives are careful to hide their intentions. Everyone says downsizing and branch closures will never happen right up to the point they do. EA has destroyed many companies and IP's over the years and I think its naive to think Bioware would be immune. So I am not as readily dismissive of this guy's statements and am keeping an open mind.
His source would have to be someone who has been told of the impending closure but given a golden parachute in return for managing the downsize and keeping the secret. My opinion anyways.

The thing is there is too much speculation on his part making conclusions which has always been my problem with his articles recently. There is little evidence one way or the other, for the way I read the quotes he has used all his comments are form low level employees that won't know what upper management is really planning. Is there a chance he is right, of course. The problem is with the information he has laid out his entire case with there is an equal chance he is wrong. Right now the one thing I would agree with his articles is that they didn't go into full production of a sequel right away and there were human issues surrounding the production of the game.
A funny thing about "empty computers" from my experiences when a location is closed permanently, there is no such thing as "empty computers" they send people in and box everything up and move the equipment elsewhere for protection or to be moved to a new location where it will be needed such as where they are moving the other employees too. I was under contract at a company that consolidated three locations into one larger one and the end of the final shift at each location they had people there packing up all the equipment and either moving some equipment into the new location, but a lot of it was just skidded up and sent to a secure warehouse for storage so the location could be turned over to the landlord as soon as possible.
There is just too little information to proclaim what is really happening and either side can still be wrong in this situation still.

there won't be any dlc for MEA, Montreal won't develop another ME game ever,
most probably ME will be delayed 10 years
in a few years we will be able to come back to this thread and quote all the users who don't believe this info and this evidence
and show them that there was no dlc and no new me by montreal
it's irrelevant if users believe the info or not, reality tells the truth

The amount of salty BioWare loyalists refusing to see any negative evidence in the first replies is amusing. But yeah, seems like Montreal took a hit. We shall know soon. I don't think it's about refusing to see negative evidence. I think it's about not drawing the same negative conclusion from the "evidence" presented. When Jason's first article came out he had to edit it because people were getting the wrong impression that people had been fired. Then, in his Reddit piece he stated that there might be DLC incoming, he doesn't know. If he had such close sources that said Mass Effect was on ice for the foreseeable future, how could he not ask them about DLC? It's such an odd thing to be unsure about when he's so sure about everything else. Bioware Montreal probably was unaware they would be downsized right away, but that could have more to do with there being a greater need on projects with closer deadlines (like Anthem) than that Mass Effect is shelved. However, with the continued patch support, weekly live-streams, and teasing of future DLC, there's less evidence to say EA and Bioware are done with Mass Effect than there is for it, especially because absolutely no one else has come forward with a similar story. Is Jason the only person in all of gaming "journalism" to have contacts within Bioware? I severely doubt it.

Not much point in throwing around conjecture about the branch. Fact is though that this all started from an actual declaration of this being the case as a matter of fact, rather than an actual guess based on solid evidence, which was just job listings. That isn't really evidence of anything at all. If it was, I'd think the branch of the company I work for would be in trouble because we haven't had postings for open positions for roughly half the year.

And where's your evidence? How reliable are you? Oh, yes. Exactly. You aren't. Just another problematic MEA lover who can't deal with any negative stuff about it, and since there's so many, you go nuts. Seen that before. Not anything new.

Shameful self-promotion by Kotaku here... If their reporting was even halfway professional they wouldn't have to try so desperately to defend it... lowers my opinion of them even further. I really wish the video game reporting industry would clean up its act.... garbage, garbage, and more garbage ruining the industry.

Is Jason the only person in all of gaming "journalism" to have contacts within Bioware? I severely doubt it. His article could not be totally accurate, but when you remember everything that happened during development that we got to know, plus the leaks, departures, delay, and another delay that BioWare wanted, a lot of it works. Some people here are just plain ignorant because of their love towards this game. I mean, there's nothing wrong with loving it, but you can do that without dismissing people and coming as a straight biased idiot. That's it. You only see BioWare loyalists dismissing the articles, hell - even Shinobi didn't dismiss it. People who can't see the two sides of an argument, are the same people who think everything is fine here, everything went down as expected. And that clearly, clearly didn't happen. It's not that hard to understand. I, for one, do hope there's something coming out, because I overall liked the game, even if it left me not really looking forward to anything, but more frustrated about the lack of polish, care and answers. Still, I hope everything turns out for the better.

It would help if you would provide evidence, instead of being obnoxiously snarky. But then again, no such evidence exists, so here we are. And where's your evidence? How reliable are you? Oh, yes. Exactly. You aren't. Just another problematic MEA lover who can't deal with any negative stuff about it, and since there's so many, you go nuts. Seen that before. Not anything new. First of all, that's not how it works. You're the one with the claim Bioware Montreal is shut down and no more. Burden of evidence is on you. Second of of all, hell yeah I have evidence. Just like someone before me pointed out, Bioware Montreal devs are still releasing patches for the game, releasing minor DLC's for free, having weekly live Twitch streams and are teasing DLC's. A dead company doesn't do this.
