The amount of salty BioWare loyalists refusing to see any negative evidence in the first replies is amusing. Look, I can only give you a 3/10 here. You need to up your game if you're going to compete with Suko.

As for the author, you're right. He's stirring up controversy to sell his own product. It's why I ignore his shenanigans. In his defence, he has got a decent track record for insightful (if sensationalist) articles. His thing on Destiny was pretty good, similar to the MEA one. The main thing that got me about all this is that the tone of his response was completely different to his original articles - his Destiny and MEA pieces came across pretty rational and well-researched, but his reddit response sounded like something off 4Chan. It was almost like they'd come from a different person. That bit about 'GUYZ DIS ISN'T CLICKBAIT CLICKBAIT IS WHEN SOMETHING IS FALSE DIS IS TRUE COZ I SAID IT WAS CLICK HERE TO READ IT AGAIN #TotallyLegit #BiowareMeltdown #BuyMahBook #IHasSources #YouCantHandleTehTruth' was plain weird.

Um, if Montreal has been shutdown...who keeps patching the game? And yes, seriously, we keep getting new threads. These threads are becoming clickbait... Until ACTUAL hard evidence comes out, I'm not going to believe that the studio is closed. The writer at Kotaku has an agenda...I don't know what it is, but he's got something in his craw about this subject, and isn't letting it go. Interestingly enough, back in 2014, he wrote an article on why devs keep getting laid off, and studios closing even on games that do pretty well. Apparently, getting cut, or being moved to a new studio is a REGULAR occurrence, according to the author...who started the wildfire about Bioware and the Montreal studio. Yes, EA is mentioned as a publisher that axes positions frequently. So, in the interest of SPECULATION and my only evidence this guys article...its very possible that the studio was going to be downsized ANYWAY...as it apparently happens ALL THE BLASTED TIME...preproduction is done? There is the door. Game enters a new phase? There is the door. Game is finished? Door. kotaku.com/why-game-developers-keep-getting-laid-off-1583192249Kinda interesting...

Agreed. While I don't agree with his conclusions in the original article, and was put off by the corrections, the article was still interesting and well written. But that bit on reddit was just...bizarre. It's like he had gotten drunk as hell at home and snapped off a reply.

But that bit on reddit was just...bizarre. It's like he had gotten drunk as hell at home and snapped off a reply. My initial impression was exactly this, that he was having a hard day or something. I couldn't work out why he'd taken it all so personally and reacted by using a lot of words to say very little. Like, he literally doesn't say anything more than what is already in his article. It was only later when I was reading that he was releasing a book that it all fell into place. I can understand him wanting to defend his reputation as a writer as he's relying on that to sell his book, but going off on one about clickbait and how people want to blame him rather than whoever else... eh. Good insight into his character. Combine that with the fact that they had to revise the article after publication and it leaves me thinking that its truth:spin ratio was a bit less balanced then I'd originally thought.

So he is writting a book about his click bait articles? To the best of my knowledge, it's a book that charts games design and draws from material he's gathered from several projects.

I agree there may be a degree of clickbait in gaming journalism, but I see the much bigger issue is the number of pro-corporate journalists sucking up to the bigger companies and giving their games unrealistically high review scores in return for access and first peeks at AAA titles in alpha or beta. Not to mention the sweet gaming rigs they get as gifts when asked to review a game. Then there was stuff like the whole ign/Allers/Chobot debacle. Back to the topic at hand. Hard to substantiate this guy's claims but either way EA's track record is pretty clear. Westwood & Origin are but two examples of companies that were bought out by EA and had their staff downsized and their IP ruined. It did not happen because EA are evil overlords, but its a function of the way conglomerates operate. This was an old video explaining this. It was released in the wake of the ME3 ending but still valid today: Link

Pro or con, they scramble to be the first to "hit" with "news" to the point that they are not reporting anything that is researched or reliable... even when it comes to simple tips for playing the games themselves. There is so much misinformation out there that the player simply cannot believe ANY of it, pro or con or even just tactical advice. I watch one reporter giving her serious tips on how to ME:A and the video was obviously made early on and without having really researched how to play the game. I tried following it, and it totally screwed me over. There are at least 100 more just like it... all released either just before or right after the game was released. That video should be now taken down or at least marked as obsolete and linked to a corrected one... but nooooo, that "reporter" is now probably too busy making videos spreading the wild speculation about the state of Bioware Montreal, etc. They (the reporters) frenzy feed off each other like a herd of rampaging buffalo headed for a buffalo jump. If their speculation is someday proven wrong... they still won't correct themselves or take the articles now or link them to what's correct. They'll sit there, just waiting to be resurrected yet another time on some forum in another thread like this one.

Sure, that phrase might be antiquated but it's very fitting for today's news cycle. I follow a broadcaster on Twitch who used to do game reviews for an online gaming magazine. He's talked about how he refused to review games until he's finished it so he could give an honest review of the game. Got to respect that.

"Hey - I'm Jason Schreier, an editor over at Kotaku. I've seen a lot of posts on this subreddit about my report last month that BioWare Montreal was scaled down and that Mass Effect is on ice. I've seen a ton of you guys say things like "Kotaku clickbait" and "Kotaku is exaggerating what happens at every studio" so let me clear a few things up, based on conversations I've had with several people who know what's going on over there: 1) As far as I know, BioWare Montreal did not expect to be scaled down after they finished Andromeda - they expected to work on a sequel right away. This was not the sort of standard development downsizing or cycling you'd normally see at a game studio. From everything I've heard, most people at BioWare expected Mass Effect to continue immediately after Andromeda launched. The controversial reception to Andromeda DIRECTLY changed things. This was not "business as usual" -- that was the point of my article. 2) My understanding is that the studio has been completely gutted. I've heard that there are dozens and dozens of empty computers as people have moved, or left, and I expect more people to depart the studio this month. It's really sad."
- If you go to the BioWare Montreal website right now, there are exactly zero job openings, while Austin and Edmonton have dozens of job openings available. www.bioware.com/en/careers/?locations%5B%5D=43#job-listings
- Looking at their past job openings for 2015+2016, there wasn't one instance where there were zero job openings. web.archive.org/web/20160715000000*/http://www.bioware.com/en/careers/?locations%5B%5D=43

"Whining", "ego trip/tantrum"? I hope that some day, when the turmoil of the MEA release is a distant memory, some some members of this forum have the good sense to be embarrassed regarding their totally unwarranted treatment of Jason Schreier. i hope that one day Jason Schreir has a good long drink and realises what a crappy journslist he's been. Then strive to do better. If he can't handle 'attacks' (aka people questioning his 'anymonous' sources) then he's in the wrong business.

Any article I saw regarding the closure of Montreal of the hiatus of Mass Effect was all accredited to the Kotaku articles, nobody bothered to even try and find anything out themselves. They made articles about articles to con people into clicking their article and what sold it was BioWare and Mass Effect, they don't care if it is correct or not they just want the click bait money.

I wonder how he would react if he was treated the same way as people from BioWare are treated? For the way he is being treated seems very tame compared to what they have gotten.
