In my view, the #1 reason EA/BioWare don't announce DLC is because from a revenue recognition perspective, when they do they have to accrue the revenue and that has market and tax implications. As long as they say nothing, the profit accruals don't have to go on the books. Reading around (particularly a poster called suibhne on RPGwatch), if EA/BioWare sell a game (MEA) without reference to there being DLC, (which they did) then they can recognize all the revenue from game sales up front (i.e. within Financial Year 2016/17). If however a DLC is advertised, without knowing of course how it will sell, that creates an ongoing performance obligation for which companies are obliged to withhold a portion of revenue for later recognition once the DLC has been delivered. I think this is why they don't have a Season Pass, which presumably sets the same obligations. This is not necessarily about cash in the bank (people pay for the games up front) but it could impact how a company recognizes profit (and how much of it) which could affect investor and market valuations. If DLC is announced shortly before launch then there is a shortest possible period between the revenue having to be recognized and the actual cash arriving. TL;DR Not saying anything about DLC is likely a financial obligation, not because they don't want to. I am not an accountant, just trying to get my head around it, happy to take corrections from accountants. Unlikely. It's rather down to announcing to have additional sales affect the stock price. That's what the SEC cares about - not taxation. I suspect it's also related to when and how they treat the costs associated with development. If they're capitalized (treated as an income-producing asset), the overall value of the company looks better than if they're expensed in the short term.

I have an incredibly, reliable unnamed source that says we're getting DLC. Okay. It's one in the books. Okay?!? Everything that was mentioned before by BioWare is actually (yeah, maybe it's really true) going to come to fruition. What's my source? It's anonymous. Now, let's see who's right after mid-July? Can't tell if serious or sarcastic. Neither! It's SPEC-U-LAT-ION. Speculation.

He doesn't use Twitter to report the news. He has Kotaku for that. I assume he uses Twitter like anyone else uses Twitter, to post whatever's on one's mind. Or to troll Trumpanzees. That's the only reason I sporadically use Twitter. This thread is sad and hilarious. Sadlarious. Any journalist that wants to have respected reputation will keep his calm and remain professional even when using social media. What Jason is doing just utterly childish and pathetic.

Here's what I don't get. DA2 did very poorly and Bioware still found it within themselves to release a DLC and then give themselves enough time to create a proper sequel. What's the difference here?

Yeah. We just have to pay close attention to Hungr's thread. They can't say anything, but tease us in a way so we can speculate like the rest of them. I'm speculating DLC and that's going on the new rig after Windows 10 is freaking done updating. T

He doesn't use Twitter to report the news. That is literally why journalists use Twitter. They link to articles. They don't link to the comments sections and laugh at the responses. Not really. I mean, they post links to their articles on their Twitter to advertise them, but all the journalists I've seen also post things that interest them, their thoughts, retweets of jokes, photos of their dogs, etc. Those are more mainstream media journalists. Geeky, younger ones are snarkier. Gaming journalists, like game devs, are going to be more opinionated, edgier. Posting political opinions (outside of extremism) won't get anyone fired. Posting the hate mail you get to goof on how unhinged it is isn't looked at as unprofessional. It's not really out of line that he'd post screenshots of forum users reacting in over the top ways. To use an old person analogy, since I'm kind of old, outlets like Gawker Media (or whatever they call the parent company now) is more Spin magazine than Wall Street Journal. It's kinda silly to expect the Twitter feed of a Millennial geek-interest reporter to look like Dan Rather's.

BioWare devs were allowed to comment on SN hoax is because they simply refuted someone's claim they worked on their project. They can not comment on Kotaku's article due to EA's business protocols, not until someone higher up in EA allows them to comment or by marketing/releasing DLC content per planned schedule.

The difference is DA2 was made within a year's time on a limited budget. This game had five years and a bigger budget. That and the standard has been raised since 2011.
