I really appreciate the thing that updates how many objects of each thing you have scrolling on the screen. I don't like how scarce wires are when I kill so many machines with precision arrows. I thoroughly enjoyed letting Nil watchnas I sniped circles around the bandit camp. They never did sound the alarm with all those "arrows in the face" they got distracted by. Pretty sure I got 90% head shots. Haven't had a good sniping while hidden session like that since borderlands. Bit confused why there isn't a built-in instruction manual. Will have to Google how to whistle for "horse" and use like... Any of my special abilities at all. Unless they're all passive and I just don't realize they're working haven't noticed any slow mo

About calling the mount, iirc it's on the d-pad, same as where you throw stone ect. you scroll through the options

There's certaintly something absolutely special about prowling around a camp or a herd of machines and pick them off one by one without them panicing

Bit confused why there isn't a built-in instruction manual. Will have to Google how to whistle for "horse" and use like... Any of my special abilities at all. Unless they're all passive and I just don't realize they're working haven't noticed any slow mo In the Skills screen, if you select the skill, it tells you exactly how to use it. Many are R1 contextual (see below). Almost all skills are passive buffs -- whatever you were doing before now gets better. Many are contextual. For example, without Strike From Below, if you climb a ladder below an enemy, there's nothing special to see or do. If you have Strike From Below, "R1" will appear on screen when you get close enough and if you press it, you'll do a special kill move. The exceptions, where something actually changes and you have an active ability you didn't before: - Lure - new option on dpad
- Dodge Prowess - hold circle for a longer distance dodge/roll
- Concentration - press R3, runs down on a timer
- Critical Hit - like every other R1 contextual, but this one is worth calling out because it is a) extremely useful and evil grin fun
- Double Shot/Triple Shot - WHILE AIMING (that is, while holding down L2), tapping R1 loads another arrow (see gripe below)
For the most part, the UI for this game is really good, very intuitive. BUT, I don't know how many times I've ended up alerting an enemy or falling off a cliff and dying, because I forgot to aim before attempting to load a double arrow. Because, if you don't hold down L2, tapping R1 does a light melee attack, which breaks stealth and also takes a step forward. Look out below!

First and foremost, give yourself time to explore. The world is rich and full of wonders. Don't let the pressure of the gazillion quests you accumulate force you to rush from one zone to another. Take your time, look around, see the sights. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas and some collectibles that you can only find if you really look for them. Plus, wandering around aides hunting + gathering, which is essential in the early game. Tip: almost everything is climbable, and you'll often find stuff at the top of a cliff, pile of rocks, or ruin. Don't worry if you over-level a little. If the next main quest stage says Level 15, and you are Level 18, that's fine, it's not like you will waltz through it. Basically, if you are finding quest stages too hard (die too often), just level up and keep that constant offset of over-leveling, like +3, +5, +8, whatever. You'll find your comfort level that way. Second, as mentioned, there are a gazillion quests. Don't be overwhelmed. Choose quests selectively. I started to get burned-out by doing too many Errands. Those are very much like Hinterlands fetch quests. Do those only if you need the rewards, which are always stated up front, so you can make an informed decision. Focus on the two main quest storylines, and selectively choose side-quests, errands, bandit camps, machine sites, etc., only as they interest you. However, and third, do explore every Cauldron you find (and do the associated Tallneck), in the order that they appear on your spear. If you stumble upon Zeta before you've done Sigma, stay away. Do them in order. They have a progression which is more enjoyable if you do them in the right order. They are what amounts to dungeon crawls, if this were a fantasy RPG. They contain puzzles and enemies to defeat. Skills to buy first: - Lure Call
- Silent Strike
- Concentration
I didn't do this because normally it's a mistake to spread your initial points across three skill trees, but these skills are used constantly, regardless of what playstyle you choose to pursue as Aloy. Speak of playstyles, it's a good idea to decide this as early as possible. It will help make skill purchase decisions, gear and upgrades, and how to approach various quests and in what order. The three main styles are: - Stealth - you sneak around and take out enemies with no one the wiser
- Brave/Tank - you run up the middle, draw all the enemies out, and rely on your armor to protect you while you run-and-gun or smite your foes
- Trapper - you craft traps, trips, and bombs and use the environment, elements and explosions (the three E's) to take out foes
You'll notice that "Hunter" is not a playstyle, because everyone has to hunt and gather to some extent. It's a basic part of the game mechanic.
These playstyles roughly translate to the three skill trees: Prowler, Brave, Forager, although the latter has more general support and enhancement buffs.
Money (shards) is scarce at first, so be thorough in cleaning out supply chests and looting corpses early on. Steal like there is no tomorrow, nobody will mind. After you progress the main quest a bit, though, money becomes plentiful, so you can stop grabbing every little thing you find and start being more selective. However, even in the early game, don't sell any Resources that are Uncommon (green), Rare (blue) or Ultra Rare (purple). Some of the best gear requires one or more of those items. Later, you'll be able to buy most of the green and blues from a vendor, but that's unlocked later in the main quest line. If you have a bunch of one green/blue item, like Watcher Lens, keep one full stack, sell the rest. Gear upgrades are also ranked with the same rarities and you'll run out of inventory room for them quickly, so what I do is I sell the ones (green) with the lowest benefits. +5% anything is great in the early game, but pretty worthless pretty quickly. Once you start getting double-digit upgrades, you can start selling the single digit ones.
Final tip, let's say there some gear, like the Shadow Sling, that you desperately want. It requires 650 shards + 1 Crystal Braiding (blue) to purchase. You have the shards, you don't have the Crystal Braiding. No worries, there is a button that lets you turn the purchase requirements into a "Job". A job is like an errand, it gets listed in your quests. You can make it active, and the game will tell you where you can get the item you need! You don't have to try to remember that you need Crystal Braiding to buy that weapon, the game remembers for you and tells you how to go about getting it.
P.S. I almost forgot, buy all the collectible maps asap. Even if collectibles are not your thing (and the rewards are not that great for getting complete sets even if they are), buy the maps anyway. They are cheap and they give you something to do when you just want to explore. As soon as you notice a merchant selling maps, just buy all of them. The Vistas are worth collecting regardless. They are cool and add some historical color to the game.
Thought I'd check in to let you know how things have gone with your advice etc: Agree about the overleveling. Being even with or even 2 levels under the monsters creates a significant enough challange that I end up just trying to take advantage of the blind spots in their AI. Of which there aren't a TON, but you can find them . I've actually liked the errands- I have like, none in y book right now. Whereas there are 6 side quests, mostly from Meridian, that I'm super "meh" about and ignoring. I especiially like the random encounter missions. They have really unexpected events. There I'll be "talk talk talk" and then BAM, an attack mid conversation and I'm like WHOA I've only cleared 2-3 bandit camps and I've been bummed not to run into any more. I like those missions as well. I didn't love the Cauldron I did, but I like the rewards. Haven't found a second one yet, wondering if I'm somehow missing them. I got Lure call at your suggestion, but have not used it once and I'm level 20. Whereas I still find the throwing a rock trick to work great. How is it useful? I seem to be about even in all 3 skill trees. I'm not actually all that interested in most of the rest of the skills, so I've been doing Gatherer stuff. I bought all the maps. Kinda regret it I'm not a collectibles girl and now I have all these distracting symbols on my map screaming at me.

Seriously, between Aloy and te Hunters, the Embrace should be empty of machines. How they even getting in there I usually R3 to see their track and lie in wait somewhere close till they come by. Does lure call make this go faster? If it's making a noise doesn't that risk more than one hearing you? Not doing hunting trials. I almost have to avoid using the mount at all just to keep up with all my meat needs so I pretty much feel like I'm constantly hunting and fighting. Maybe that's a sign I suck at te game

I didn't love the Cauldron I did, but I like the rewards. Haven't found a second one yet, wondering if I'm somehow missing them. Override a new Tallneck. It will reveal the nearest Cauldron. Plus, doing the Tallneck thing is pretty fun. Each one presents a different challenge. Basically, it saves time if you are using a stealthy playstyle. Instead of waiting for an enemy to pass by you, you draw them to you. One at a time. Usual pattern is crouch in tall grass, face one enemy, use the Lure call (it works kind of like whistling for a mount), the nearest enemy that is centered in your view will alert (yellow) and walk towards you, then you Silent Strike or Override it. Rinse and repeat. Works on humans or machines. Do you have the latest update of the game? They added map filtering. IIRC it's on the Option button. You can turn off any distracting things you don't like on the map.

Since it was announced at E3 this year we really don't know too much about it but going by the sounds of it, but it doesn't sound at all like Awakening or Trespasser and more like a traditional expansion. New storyline, new enemies, new characters in a new area.

Does the special component arrow seem to have diminishing returns? Seems like using it twice is about it's max before you may as well switch to another arrow.

Anybody else feel like Fatal Inheritance side quest was poorly done? YES! Sort of slapdsh and it stands out because it's so wonky. The "twist" literally appears out of nowhere. WTF were you, dude, when I was fighting all those bots? Fortunately, it's the only quest I've found so far that's wonky. Everything else seems polished. Not sure what you mean by "special component". Trying to avoid spoilers, or is there a bow I haven't found yet ... Corruption arrows generally take two to trigger the effect. And other enemies (human or machine) have to be near enough to alert and need to have line-of-sight. Otherwise is just wears off and nothing happens. It's great when they turn on each other, though. I've cleared many machine sites just with Corruption arrows and sitting back and watching them take each other out.
