What I miss about the Old BSN is how active it was and how much information & theories you could find there about Bioware games. There were some great discussion threads and arguments that could go on forever it seemed. More varied opinions too which made the discussions more interesting. To see that Bioware was going to close the Official Forums was very disappointing to say the least. It was just so unnecessary.

I didn't even know the Bioware forum closed down until I went there and got the message of doom that it had closed. I had been gone from the old forum for a long time, but I wanted to start getting more information on Andromeda and get ready for it and all that I guess. Wasn't meant to be though. I was kind of sad about it actually. I didn't know about all the weird shit and banning going on at the end until I read about it here. Kind of glad I didn't have to see all of that I guess now. I mostly hung out on the ME3MP boards there when I was still visiting there. Pretty much what I'm doing now!  |

This thread is about the 'Concerning Our Forums' announcement made a year ago today (July 29th 2016), when BioWare announced that the BioWare Forum (BSN Prime, as we refer to it) would close. The Star Wars: The Old Republic forums will continue to operate; however, our public boards for Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and legacy BioWare titles will no longer be available. This wasn’t an easy decision. Our players are important to us. Your feedback, stories, and love for our games drive and inspire us. In the past, our forums were the only way we could speak to you directly. They allowed our developers to talk with fans, and gave our players the opportunity to talk with each other about our games. But with the rise of social media and geek culture, there have never been more ways for us to connect. Now we can travel around the world, meeting with you face-to-face at events like PAX, SDCC, and even shows in our own backyard. I wasn't actively visiting that forum at the moment so I only found out a while afterwards that BSN was gone... ☹ I wasn't very active outside the ME2 Modding thread back then on the old forums. Got a little annoyed when after being gone almost a year my discovery was that white bioware social page saying it was down. However just recently found: web.archive.org/Some bioware social pages still exist... not all but some. So there is that positive. |

First of all, the title of this announcement gave me a heart attack. I thought it was to say this board was in trouble or closing down or something else disastrous. At least put ": A Retrospective" in the title, or something ... :gasp: My only other comment is that I'm glad this board survived the FUD of the early days of the transition, when a half dozen competing boards sprung up over night. And I think that has a lot to do with the founding admins, who's steady hands made this a soft landing for the refugees of OG BSN. Thanks for that. Also a shout out to Fextralife, for archiving most of the content from the OG BSN. This. At least as interesting to watch as the mayhem of the final days of BSN Prime was the genesis of this forum with its competitors at the very outset. Thanks to Cyonan and the other Admins who have spent their and time made it happen. Very well done. |

While I was a bit disappointed that BioWare was just shutting down their official forum, they at least were honest enough to state they weren't looking at them anymore. It was clear after a while, before that announcement, that the forums were no longer a place for feedback that BioWare relied on. Not to mention, it became a cesspool for trolls and haters before its end. I'd also have to say the moderators on old BSN were absolutely terrible. They would give out warnings and bans without actually making sure they understood the entire situation.
I still would think a dedicated forum to BioWare games would be a better source of feedback than Twitter, Facebook, or other forms of social media, but BioWare clearly disagrees.

Walking that line is not an exact science, there are certainly a few people that view this forum as a toxic dump, unjustifiably in my view. People will need to judge for themselves. |

Whatever. Fortunately before BSN shutdown, I transferred a few threads over to this site.
I would say my favorite thread was in the DA section where folks could ask a developer a question. I asked several and got many responses from them. Unfortunately that stopped about 6 months before DAI was released

I felt that Bioware was closing shop because of all the pitchforks over ME3; the forum had turned pretty gloomy. My reaction then was; well then, run and hide but it's not going to help much.  Anyway, I had a enjoyable time there; ME, DA, ME fanfics, ME romance thread. I think (my impression) a pretty good chunk of peeps never followed the shift to a new home which is sad. |

I see similar disparaging of new BSN on Reddit subs, like /r/masseffect, which puts OG BSN to shame for sheer drama per second. Karmic justice for Bioware, afaic. They said one of the reasons they closed down OG BSN was because they could connect with fans more readily through existing social media outlets. Hah! Like Twitter is some bastion of civility on the interwebs. I think it's just a tribal thing. The amount of disparagement one community heaps on another is proportional to the similarity of the communities. Hey, I invented a new law: Papa Charlie Niner's Law! Corollary: Pot calling the kettle black syndrome. |
