This thread is about the 'Concerning Our Forums' announcement made July 29th 2016, when BioWare announced that the BioWare Forum (BSN Prime, as we refer to it) would close. The blog post (in full) is in the spoiler tag:
Concerning Our Forumsby Conal Pierse - July 29, 2016 This message is also available in French, German, and Polish. After great consideration, we are closing down the BioWare forums, effective August 26, 2016. The Star Wars: The Old Republic forums will continue to operate; however, our public boards for Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and legacy BioWare titles will no longer be available. This wasn’t an easy decision. Our players are important to us. Your feedback, stories, and love for our games drive and inspire us. In the past, our forums were the only way we could speak to you directly. They allowed our developers to talk with fans, and gave our players the opportunity to talk with each other about our games. But with the rise of social media and geek culture, there have never been more ways for us to connect. Now we can travel around the world, meeting with you face-to-face at events like PAX, SDCC, and even shows in our own backyard. We can share stories with you on the go, giving you a look behind the scenes on sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. In turn, you’ve built your own fantastic communities in places like Tumblr and Reddit. You’ve created comprehensive Wikis and countless pieces of fantastic art, fiction, and cosplay. With so many great things so widely available, our developers today find themselves spending more time on other sites, and less time in our own forums. And to our fans and players who came to those boards looking to talk to us, it was a great disservice. So it is with a heavy heart that we will close our public forums on August 26, 2016. We will maintain some private boards, and may use these in future for beta feedback or other special projects. My memory of that day is receiving my first permaban from BSN Prime that very night, as I was very distraught at the news, crawled to the bottom of a bottle, and drunk-posted a lot that night. Most of it was actually logical and respectful, albeit very critical of the decision. Then, I made the mistake of quoting a friend who said "fuck" in their post and added that since the forum was closing, we ought to burn couches during the anarchy. Apparently, one of the BioMods determined that was "inflammatory, inciting speech" and - with no warning points and a track record of only ever being a helpful community member - I was permabanned. Then the forum revolt REALLY got underway. LOL It was heartening to see so many rally at my apparent forum demise. Equally heartening was when BioWare itself became aware of what had happened. They were... not happy. And three devs spent that following Saturday morning figuring out how to un-permaban me (it had not been done before). They were successful, so I was able to enjoy the last days of BSN Prime while also luring folks over here to the unofficial lifeboat. Thus, the Drunk Turian Sentinel entered into legend as BSN Jesus.  |

Although today I view it as a good thing BioWare killed off BSN Prime, back then I huge opposed the decision.

I am not a member of this forum, but I love bioware games and last year when read the news that the forums was going to close I got sad and angry, like so many else, beacause the community had such love for the games and amazing bonds beacause of that. I followed your struggles to find a new place and it warms my heart that this place still going strong.

I was also pretty sad about the previous forums closing down. I didn't post much but I really liked looking at people's screenshots and reading threads to find inspiration for new ways to play DA (RPG ideas and such). But then this forum was made and it's a good replacement in my opinion, so in the end it wasn't too bad  |

I wasn't on the original BSN either, although I do remember checking for this or that piece of DA or ME information. I was never really part of the fun and games I read about from other forum members, though. Concerning these forums as they currently are, however, I can only say that they are something you should be proud of. I'm in the MEAMP section mostly and I must say that the trove of information other members have dug up is more than impressive. Also, this place is the closest thing to a decent conversation on the web. Or, to paraphrase Bill Nye: "I'm loving me some uBSN on the electric internet machines that all the kids are using..." #keepupthegoodwork |

Thanks for the heart attack SofaJockey! I'm not as young as some of the members here. Another shock like that might end me!  Remember being annoyed and a little uncertain. BSN was the only place I spent any real time online. Still think it was a bad decision, but on balance, I prefer this place greatly, so...I guess I'm happy with how things turned out.

I..I...I would like to say tha"burp"t day was so so so so weird I guess. I mean I've seen a lot of "burp" fucked up shit in my travels around the universes. But i mean man closing the forum because they were only going to fo"burp"cus on only communicating through social media seemed more fucked up then that time I found some shmeckles on the Florbo Islands of Dandeedoo.
But it real doesnt affect me that mu"burp"ch. there are millions of BSNs in millions of universes.

I was mostly sad that they would delete all of the posts instead of locking up everything.
There were a lot of helpful tips, funny and playful memes, some very personal confessions and deep personal stories of the BSNers...
So it was very sad to know that everything would be gone.
Even if some of the forum posts were transferred to new fan sites, it would still not be the same (who can remember the quoting monster boxes posts?)...

Hmm, I just packed my (metaphorical) things and left. I was super distraught of course but I just knew that the decision was made and apparently no amount of sadness or anger from the fans could change Bioware's decision so my further posting on BSN would have changed nothing - it would have been just as useful as screaming in the wind. The good thing is that many good people from old BSN came here so there's still good company. Plus, the rules on uBSN are more lax towards cursing and the like which pleases me. :gentleman: Example: Fuck Bioware for making that stupid decision and closing OG BSN.  And thank you guys, for making this place for us and maintaining it. May new BSN live long and prosper! |

That was a sad day. I thought: [another] [very] bad move on Bioware's part vis-a-vis maintaining and developing fan loyalty. But, I was truly amazed to see the uBSN pop up in its place! Kudos to you! Like it better here since it seems people are able to express themselves a bit more (censoring moderation's less heavy handed).
Gearbox Software (Borderlands) also dumped all their old forums. They did offer new forums but a wealth of fan research and information was buried (bunch of extra work for people to scramble to save, and re-format) so it wasn't as bad.

You scared me SofaJockey I actually thought for a second you were going to close the forums with that title... with no other context.  I remember being frustrated with their decision as its not l like I can travel all over the country to different cons and what not. But, I think it all worked out in the end especially given the fact that we actually have a couple of devs registered on here. That actually talk to us every once in a while. |

I remember crying at lunch on the phone to my husband. Like actual tears. I'd found Dragon Age in March and my obsession hadn't peaked yet so for my only outlet of fan love to be deleted out from under me was an emotional blow.
Then anxiety for like two weeks as a handful of forums popped up trying to decide which one I'd use vs what everyone else was going to do.
Relief when it was all settled. And a year later, quite pleased at the lively traffic.

It got hilarious towards the end.
I was more annoyed about losing the billion images I put on of my various playthroughs, including the mission by mission analysis which I never finished.
Some of the moderating was indeed quite special by the end.

I'd already pretty much left when they shut down the OT section. Sadly, I recall that some people applauded the move at the time, arguing the OT section was toxic or some such. That's irony for you.  |
