Nah, you are not that old. Old folks have good taste in video games. Like Final Fantasy VII, MGS, Superman64, Warcraft, and KOTOR. You like this Andromeda crap... you're suspect. Candidate #2 for the airlock. I played every single one of those games, sans Superman64, as a kid. Am I really that old? We are. I'm more disappointed no one took the bait on the Superman 64 thing... I... failed.

Pft. I'm old enough to remember when the newest thing in CRPGs was Starflight. (I still have my 5-1/4 diskettes.) And I like Andromeda fine. I think I still have my Commodore 64 stored in the basement somewhere. I played Phantasie for many hours on thing, while my squadron was deployed in the middle of nowhere. I don't have any 5-1/4" floppies around anymore, though. And I like Andromeda fine.

I suppose a better reference since i haven't seen all of Judge Dredd is that my bro reminds me of Jack Bauer.

Man, when I was growing up, we didn't even have electricity and we listened to the Shadow on the radio and read books instead of playing on the magic picture boxes all day!
(I'm actually not terribly old.)

And I like Andromeda.

Ultimately, I think Mass Effect has fallen victim to the series' own success, and that any deviation from the previous installments mean it alienates people who came for a different experience. Trying to develop a series and say 'Our series doesn't always have to be *this*, it can be *that* instead' will leave many saying 'This isn't Mass Effect (or whatever)'. Same as in music really - it is possible to develop and evolve, but its a very risky endeavour.
For many, Mass Effect *is* the original games and some people further narrow by saying Mass Effect isn't Mass Effect without Sheperd. It was much the same in The X Files with Fox Mulder etc. I admit that for me, though I like the ME games (except ME3 anyway), the series only *truly* mattered to me in Mass Effect 1. ME1 was lightning in a bottle IMO, and whilst ME2 is objectively probably the 'best' ME, it never spoke to me the way the first game did.
So were we too harsh on MEA? I think if we were, its understandable. It wasn't the truly outstanding, always remember that feeling when you first played it, pioneer showing us the future of modern RPGs that this stale gen really needed it to be. Bioware have found ways over the years to keep producing games that were good in ways we didn't even realise we wanted, that you take such things for granted. But its been a long time since they've done that now. Not helped by modern apathy to 'Grand Narratives' and the rise of open world and\or multiplayer.

Same as in music really - it is possible to develop and evolve, but its a very risky endeavour. For me it's the weakest Bioware experience I ever had. Of all Bioware games I ever played, and that's a lot, starting with Baldur's Gate. I never called it an outright bad game because it isn't. It's just bland to me. Never before I felt like do I really have to talk to this or that companion again? Never before I felt like not doing another playthrough right after finishing the game for the first time. And never before I felt like there isn't any memorable moment or quest in the whole game. Nothing to look forward to when doing another playthrough. So, this has got little to do with this being another Mass Effect. It has everything to do with this being Bioware and me holding them to higher standards when it comes to companions and protagonist. With Ryder I never felt like being or wanting to be Ryder. I felt like steering an avatar through the game, just as I would with a generic shooter.

My very first game system was the original NES that I bought with my allowance in 1988. My first computer was a Power Macintosh. So don't presume to tell me what I can or cannot like. Also I've played all of those as a kid.

Legitimate complaints = whining. Months later, the repetition has gotten old, stale, and weird. Like I said before. Who wants to read whining (legit or not) for so long? Go find something to do that doesn't involve bitching and whining for months. Hmmm, how about no. How about, you do you.

You're forgetting charge, which is one of the coolest biotic abilities in the whole series (even if only a Vanguard can use it). Charge + shotgun on the face was lovely on ME2. Singularity was good to get some annoying enemies out of cover (ironically it's actually useless now in Andromeda, because now you can just jump on them, LOL.). Throw was ocasionally useful (I usually combined it with charge: charge an enemy and then make Samara throw the guys at his side so they wouldn't shoot me. Same for Jack and her shockwave. Again, in Andromeda it becomes useless, because I charge and melee everything with asari sword or shotgun on their face or use consumable). Yep. I was forgetting Charge because I don't really like it. (I'm not 100% certain that I actually played my ME2 Vanguard through ME3.) Sounds like our playstyles are diametrically opposed. Anyway, you get the point -- against enemies without barriers an Adept or Sentinel plays like a weak Soldier with a finishing move. You've got some marginally-useful abilities, but most of your fighting has to be done with weapons. Pretty much that. Charge was a bit of an outlier in the sense that it was one of the few biotics that didn't end up butting heads with the defence system, as it was primarily a mobility power that let you maximise use of the Shotgun. Singularity was awful in ME2. Even if it did work (it's sketchy interaction with cover and defences meant you couldn't even be sure of that), its projectile speed and derpy target tracking meant that it was only usable at a relatively short range with any reliability.

ME 2 is my favorite of the Mass Effects. Though i must note the entire series has been style >substance. If anything Andromeda is reversing that trend. In terms of the core gameplay I agree with this 100% Even if the game was a hallway shooter like ME:2, the power mechanics, profile swapping and versatility to make your own build are good stuff and main the reason I find replayability. In the other ME games, the shoot 'em up is fun, but the games lean on the story massively in some spots. I look at ME:2's story and ME:A's story in comparison like this: Mass Effect 2: good Michael Bay movie Mass Effect Andromeda: bad Michael Bay movie.

That story was too important in previous ME games as compared to the shooter elements? Not at all. I loved the story in the games. I'm just saying that for me in ME:2 there were times story covered up mundane shooter gameplay. In ME:A I feel the core gameplay was better, but the story came up short in a variety of ways that made some of the more mundane quests... more noticeably mundane.

As a long time and die hard Mass Effect fan I was disappointed in Andromeda when it first came out but now when looking back on it several months later I can't help but to reanalyze it and decide if maybe we the fans were too harsh on Andromeda. If you enjoyed this video please check us out on YouTube - 3 Chopsticks - I post my mass effect videos every Monday because I think it is the greatest gaming franchise ever created! Regardless of your thoughts on the video or Andromeda I just want to say thank you all for taking the time to comment and etc, its always good to talk with other Mass Effect fans! Great vid chopsticks! I've been an ME fan for as long as I can remember and its one of my favorite series in gaming. ME Andromeda is my favorite game of all time, so far!! I had my doubts early on as it looked/played much like other games in the series, but the stories drew me in again, the characters taught me to care for them, and I grew to understand Ryder and how I was glad he wasn't like Shepherd, in a good way. The defining moment for me in the game was in Ryder's Family Secrets. I beat the main game a month of so ago and have been finishing up all the side quests since then. My buddy called yesterday after finishing that particular side mission and said I have to do it NOW and call him back to discuss. It was just so damn good! I couldn't sleep last night after completing it. Games that can provide those kind of moments are the best in my mind. The problem is they too few these days. Too many tacked on campaigns just to get MP out there. Not Andromeda though. I'm sad that it looks like ME as a series will be gone, but I still have ME:A to continue to play until we find out for sure. Cheers
