Went back and forth on whether or not to create a new thread for the TV show coming on Amazon Prime, but since the last post here is nearly 5 years old, it seems unlikely people want to or care about discussing the books It's actually a little better than I was expecting. I was going to check out the first episode or two when they became available anyway, but my feelings are basically summed up by this. Nowhere near 'hype', and still don't actually expect great things, but it might not be bad. 1. Nice necro, I just hit like on a post from 2016 before realizing it. 2. Agreed, at least the visuals in the trailer look very decent so far. Still tough to really judge how good it can capture the books. I am listening to the audio book series at the moment. It's perfect to fall asleep to because a) I already/still know the story to some extent from back in the day and both the male and female narrators have these awesome calming voices, that just make me fall asleep almost instantly. This also means that after about half a year, I am still in the middle of book 2 and at this pace, I'll be through it sometime around 2038 but I am not in a rush. Anyway, looking forward to the series. Between that one, season 2 of The Witcher and the LoTR series next September, Fantasy fans get quite a bit of streaming fodder these days. Nothing like a good necro every now and then. I am pretty sure I don’t have another reread in me for the books. There was a period where I would reread the whole series in anticipation of the next book. Weirdly, I only reread The Gathering Storm once (before A Memory of Light) and haven’t touched a WoT book since finishing it. I like Pyke as an actress, and I’d already decided that they weren’t going to be able to do the “ageless” look to my satisfaction so I hoped they wouldn’t try. Based on the large number of Aes Sedai in that trailer, it looks like they decided against trying. Rand isn’t tall enough, though

Still, I'm not completely horrified yet It certainly does. But to be entirely honest, the books quite often have a little bit of a cheesy feel as well, so it kinda fits.
There are only two things I really disliked in the trailer: 1. The fact that the Aes Sedai in the show seem to be entirely color coded instead of just wearing color fringed shawls. It seems a bit much and when there are multiple Ajas together it looks like they are about to play a real live version of Trivia Pursuit or something.
2. The white Tower looks very unimpressive. At first I thought this might not be Tar Valon at all but maybe Caemlyn and the royal palace there. It can barely be called a tower at all IMO.
Apart from that, I thought it looked pretty decent.

It certainly does. But to be entirely honest, the books quite often have a little bit of a cheesy feel as well, so it kinda fits. I just meant visually. It's hard for me to pinpoint the problem though. The Witcher show has the same visual problem (for me) to a lesser extent, while Game of Thrones didn't. Like I'm watching community theater instead of a big budget professional production. Maybe it's the Instagram-perfect makeup and saturated clothing colors? Or partially that?

Yep, I know what you mean. I also think it's mainly color correction. GoT and LotR (the movies) were a little desaturated, which gave them a more earthy, worn look.

If the first half of an entire episode isn’t spent in silence examining every minute detail of every female characters dress, then the entire show is a failure But also agree with your point - it’s too colourful. But that’s ok, most of the POV characters were channellers anyway, and one constant - man or woman - was their noting that everything was brighter, sharper and had more colour when they held the Power.

Hmmm?...
I can understand the logic behind the director upping the saturation, like a Skyrim ENB mod, for the scenes probably because they wanted it to be visually distinct from GoT. The main negatives for me are in the cgi looking cheap like Tar Volen/White Tower and the channeling/weaves, the Aes Sedai not looking ageless but haggard, the actress for Moiraine looking older than Nynaeve's despite Rand thinking that she looked similiar in age to Nyneave but the gaze from her eyes made her seem more mature. Lan not having a hard angular face, Perrin not being a specimen of a man, and Rand not being tall and lanky.
It could be worse but i'll withhold further judgement until i see the first episode.

I thought it was hands down better than Sword of Truth, which basically just copied all the central ideas. Oh man, Sword of Truth sucked imo. I read it originally when I was pretty young (12-14 maybe?) and I thought it was OK at that time, but re-reading it as an adult was... woof, quite the different experience. Very transparently a WoT rip-off, and not even a decent one, and as the series went on it just got even worse. Also, from everything I've heard the author is pretty much a gigantic bag of dicks (massive ego problem- thinks he's the next Tolkien despite being a terrible writer, is an asshole to artists and others who have to work with him, etc.), whereas Robert Jordan was by all accounts a very nice and likeable dude so there's that. But yeah, WoT is fantastic, definitely a top-3 or top-5 alltime fantasy series. I'd probably put it ahead of Game of Thrones, if nothing else because it was actually finished. My favorite is probably Lord of Chaos (the ending with Dumai's Wells and everything is still one of my favorite sequences in a fantasy novel), and Mat and Rand are probably my favorite characters. Well, pre-Brandon Sanderson Mat at least (I think Sanderson did a good job overall, but he just never got a good feel for Mat's personality or dialogue). I'm also very skeptical about a WoT adaptation, because companies seem to be trying to replicate the success of Game of Thrones, and WoT is such a different type of fantasy series that I'm afraid its getting set up for disappointment. But I'd love to be mistaken about that.

Less so as Moridin. But in general the villains weren't a strong point of the series (fairly one-dimensional as a rule), so Taim was sort of the exception imo

Never forget Mat's duel with Galad & Gawyn. I really hope they do that scene justice. Jordan's blademaster lore, and the descriptiveness of his choreography makes WoT's combat sequences one of my favorites in the fantasy genre.

Fight scenes are one of the few areas where TV/movie adaptations of books can exceed the experience of the book(s) they derive from. I don't know if the scene with Bran and Hodor in "The Door" will even be in Martin's books, but if it is, I struggle to imagine how his description will be as impactful as it was watching Bran's soul wither and die when he realises that he was responsible for Hodor being the way that he was. It is similar with fight scenes - small scale, but awesome ones in particular - a picture worth a thousand words etc etc.

The rest of the male Forsaken were all protected from the Taint, but barred from the True Power of the Dark One. Padan Fain was pretty great, I thought. And Valda, in his moments. I was also totally blindsided by Sheriam, not male of course, but still.

Since this is an Amazon production i'm optimistic that they'll hire quality talent in regards to choreography. There's really no excuse for them not to.

As I mentioned I am also keen to watch the series not knowing the content which will be a huge change for me as a read the book first then watch series person. Will likely watch series one and if I like it it will be hard for me not to read the books.

Trailer looks alright. I'm glad there's more epic fantasy coming to the small screen. After the wild success of the LOTR movies I had hopes we'd see more and more epic fantasy movies and shows, new IP too.
While there's been more, specifically this genre seems to have taken a bit of a backseat comparable to sci-fi and comic adaptations in the TV world instead.
***
In terms of the books, I've finished them, but the magic was gone after things dragged on for two decades. There was a slight spark of hope in book 9 that things would progress but... then book 10 happened and I put the series down for good.
Then I found out one of my favourite authors was going to finish the series, Brandon Sanderson. I actually didn't like that, because I wanted Sanderson to work on his own (significantly better) Cosmere series. I understood it got him worldwide recognition though, so there was some benefit. Because of his involvement I read the last books, but I'll never reread the series again.
I will give the show a try. I agree it's a lot brighter than I'd expect but that's not a deal-breaker for me. I don't care that Aes Sedai don't look ageless or the characters look a bit different from the books. That's just how TV adaptations work. What will kill it for me is if the pacing is as horrendous as the books.

While anything is possible and they could totally surprise me, I anticipate that the series will not reach the heights of the books (which had peaks and valleys in terms of quality as well). Doing it your way means you won't be doing what I did with Game of Thrones (and will be doing with this series as well). Then, if you like the series, you can check out the books later.

If it does it won't be a motion picture it'll be a series of photographs.

I never got to the end of the Wheel of Time novels. There was a book or two where it felt like the plot moved with the speed of a particularly reluctant glacier, and I stopped reading in the middle of a book because I picked up something more interesting and basically forgot that WoT exists.

Jordan's blademaster lore, and the descriptiveness of his choreography makes WoT's combat sequences one of my favorites in the fantasy genre. I was going to mention that too, one of my favorite scenes. Mat, wearing pajamas, after almost having died (and still not recovered), beats the two golden boys at once with a stick.
