What a ride, for the Good, the Bad, and, forgive the reference, the Ugly.
If Kotaku's article is accurate (and I think it is), what an achievement completing this game in 18 months.
Still, it shows exactly that.
. . .
I bought the game in the end of June, 50% off on Origin, after the initial patches. I never falied to preorder a Mass Effect, but after ME3's ending and all the controversy surrounding it, the gaming industry practices made me a wary costumer. This was reinforced by the lack of MEA's content shown before the game's release.
My first impression was of a game with beautifully rendered maps, but very shallow dialogue. This persisted till the epilogue. The story feels like a first draft, as others have said, and should be a lot more refined in some areas. The lack of clear progression and structure (inadvertently) gave rise to some epic moments: Surviving Eos radiation with a sliver of health after jumping from the cliff above Prodromos and reaching the safety zone right on time. Finding Turians on Havarl with Vetra on my side without even knowing they were there, just to be ambushed by the Roekaar, and surviving the encounter... The animations were not so bad, I had my share of glitches (the funniest one was talking to Peebee's on the Tempest, she opended her arms and dissapeared through the roof!) None game breaking though.
The lack of beta testing is shown on simple design choices: you can't board the Tempest without leaving planets, the looong transitions between planets and Stellar Systems, the learning curve needed for researching and crafting, etc.
In the end, a Honest 7,5/10 game. Not bad, but not great. It's greatest sin, the ugliest part, is that it feels...boring. You have jetpacks, shotguns, krogans, and it still feels boring.
After 10 ME1 playthroughs, 12 ME2 and 2 ME3's with 1200 hours of MP, It's sad to realize I can't bother to start a new game, nor play the MP. This will likely be my first, and last, MEA experience. Specially after the recent "no more SP content" announcement.
Ten years playing Mass Effect, and it ended with a whimper.
To tell you all the truth: I think I'm not BWs target audience anymore. So, if you really liked the game, more power to you. For me, it's time to move on.

Yeah, the game was hot garbage at release but now after all the patches it's just hugely disappointing

In the end, a Honest 7,5/10 game. Not bad, but not great. So... average equates to a 7.5/10? How the hell does that work? Why would 7.5 be average and not, ya know, 5? Middle of the road means 5/10, because 5 is actually in the middle. How the hell could anything ever get a 2 or a 1 if anything below 7.5 is bad? A 1 would have to rape your grandmother and burn your house down if 7.5 is average.

I remembered Sluggy Freelance Dimension of Lame now...the worst thing they had were "Rather Nice Days", until a demonic invasion happened. People getting impaled, commenting : "This is rather nice..." It's not an average game, there's a lot of work there. It's just not a game that I found enjoyable enough. Maybe I'm getting too demanding? Can't enjoy a 7,5 game anymore...

This is the scale: 1 out of 10: So broken that it's unplayable 2 out of 10: Barely a game it's so bad and poorly made 3 out of 10: Hardly anything in it works well but at least you can play it 4 out of 10: Below average 5 out of 10: Average 6 out of 10: Above average 7 out of 10: Good 8 out of 10: Very good 9 out of 10: Fantastic 10 out of 10: So fucking amazing that you don't even perceive or care about its few minor flaws

For me, and I think the OP, generally speaking in school and academia a 7-7.9 tends to be 'average' and everything below that starts becoming a failure and even worse, down to the completely broken. For me very few games I have played, in fact just one pretty much, I would rate below a 5.

By your standards, which score MEA gets ? And what games do you consider 10/10? MEA gets a 5/10 from me. As far as 10/10 games, that's hard. There have been a number of games that I would give a perfect score right after playing them, but having time to reflect brings critiques to light. When I first played it ME1 was a 10/10. Now it's a 9/10 because the combat is clunky and the inventory system sucks. The Witcher 3 was a 10/10, but now it's a 9/10 because some of the writing is very "teenage edgelord" and I had several game-crashing bugs. DAO was a 10/10, but now it's a 9/10 because I would never play it again without 'quality of life' mods now that I've used them.

Saints Row 2 is pretty close to a 10/10 game. So is Max Payne.

Yeah, 70% is the average line for me. But other ways of grading are totally valid. I have a few 10/10 games actually. I don't grade by perfection, but by my personal enjoyment. So some flaws can slip through for me if I love the game. I leave rigorous grading to the professionals. Here are a couple, flaws and all... Alien: Isolation DA:O and DA:I (DA2 doesn't quite make it but I still love that one) Fallout NV The whole damn Mass Effect Trilogy Metal Gear Solid

Read some of my reviews...trust me there are a lot of games much worse for wear than andromeda. That's my point actually. I've seen so much talk of how awful ME:A was that I can't help but wonder if they have ever played any of the games that are truly awful. I feel like that's an issue with hyperbolic writing and a lack of fundamental ideals throughout crafting a review. Especially when it comes to videos and online critics outside of professionals who play a large gamut of games. It also comes into an issue of what they consider awful in one respect is fun in another. Some bad games are fun because they are bad (big rigs, ride to hell, stuff like that) but that doesn't change the fact they are bad, they just don't care due to enjoyment of it with friends or on videos or w/e. It is an issue though. For me no game is ever perfect but no game should ever be a high score, an A plus, a 10/10 of you will. The website I write for gave witcher 3 a perfect 10, but if I reviewed it I'd give it an 8.5 or 9, tops. That's still damn good, I don't really go beyond a 8 most of the time. As for Mass Effect, yeah, a 7, 7.5 is about right. It could have been a lot worse considering the dev time line we have.

Maybe it is because I played all Mass Effect games in 2016-2017 with the Dragon Age in between, with about the same # of replays for each (2) of the same game that they fall into three categories for me:
Decent, but show its age and older gaming mechanics: DAO and ME1 (6 to 7 scores) Had lots of fun & played in one breath, lots of feels: DA2, ME2/3 and MEA (8 to 10 scores) I paid for it, so might as well finish it: Inquisition (5 score)
I for the life of mine do not see the whole "drop" in the quality of writing, because tbh any dialogue in any of those games would not have been out of place in another except the sudden introduction of copious swearing from ME3 onwards. With a notable exception of Mordin, Tali (in ME3), Anders, Dorian and Liam, the character characterization is rather light and depends on your personal tastes.
The only game that had a plot that stood out from seven was DA2. The rest were similarly conceived and executed as epic saga standard edition.
Sometime I wonder if the folks are just tired of what they've loved too much. It's like me trying to play Baldur's Gate 3 were it released tomorrow in FB.

Without any highlights to remember - as opposed to the OT and other Bioware games. And I played a lot. Can't say I have played any game deserving to be called awful. I wouldn't even know which one is deserving of the title. Maybe Ride to Hell or however it's called. But that one I only know from the Angry Joe Show.
