Yep. I met a guy at the gamestore a few years ago who was trading in ME3. I asked him what he thought of the game. He knew nothing about the single player portion. He bought the game just for the multiplayer. He said he has a lot of friends who do the same. Buy games just for multiplayer ME3's multiplayer was good, but even so... I agree, but what? That's like going to an Italian restaurant, but asking for a hamburger.

-(_ANTHEM_)-
Actually, the studio needs more than just its fans.
Bio needs to re-capture its glory days with Anthem. After the ME3 ending kerfuffle, Bio had MEA to tell the world the studio is back... that was a fail. The British Golden Joystick Awards nominated MEA in which category? I believe it was for a VO of the Sara Ryder character (Fryda Wolff ?).... nothing about the game itself. I'm unsure if Bio won anything with MEA.
The GOTY awards is up later this year. Let's hope it will do better. In the meantime, much rides on this new IP, methinks.

Absolutely not, there's a reason why Bioware nuked the forums. They want the addictive multiplayer audience who are happy to throw money at them, not the single-player audience who are hard to milk and hard to please.

I just see this as Bioware getting out of their comfort zone to try something new (which could be a good thing). I remember how fervent the opposition was to Bioware including multiplayer into Mass Effect 3, but it ended up being one of the biggest surprises that game produced (hell, I played that mode alone for 1400 hours). There's definitely going to be a shift in the install base of their game, and undoubtedly the SP fans will be less likely to purchase this title.
What's going on with Anthem kinda reminds me of the whole Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare vs Battlefield 1 debate. Numerous people were upset with Infinite Warfares setting, with a vocal few saying that Call of Duty (as a franchise) was done, and that Battlefield 1 would usurp their position. Come the end of 2016, and Infinite Warfare still outsold Battlefield 1. At the end of the day, it's a matter of what crowds you please. If there are enough people interested in your shared-world shooter, as opposed to the dedicated singleplayer RPG fanbase, then what really have you lost? Dragon Age will still be there, and I imagine Mass Effect will be too.
While I don't know if Anthem will sell as well as Destiny (in all honesty, I don't think it will), I do think having it exist presents a potential benefit to the genre, as it could set a new bar for how to tell stories in such a game environment.

Wasn’t the response to the game at E3 2017 a big, fat “meh”?
Doesn’t bode well.
Andromeda on the other hand....well you know.

Y'know Anthem would not be the first Bioware game that focused on MP aspect over SP. They made one fifteen years ago. It was called Neverwinter Nights. The single player campaign in NWN was always secondary to the co-op features and it showed as the SP was lackluster to say the least (with the exception of HotU).

I saw Destiny 2 players play Divinity Original Sin 2 and loving it... As an avid Destiny player, I'm curious to see how Anthem handles its customization and weapon balancing. Destiny's often been a bit of a shitshow on that front, since Bungie's been keen on nerfing or oversimplifying things this time around, I think largely because of its PvP mode. On the story front, I'm sure Anthem will be better somehow, but then that's not a high bar to leap over.

Otherwise any Studio could have created Anthem and they wouldn't have needed Bioware. Or everyone was just impressed out SW:TOR, the buggiest game of all time, turned into a profitable MMORPG for some reason. lmao

Honestly though I think Anthem will probably have some of the same issues that SWTOR has - and that's balance in content. What SWTOR seems to have trouble doing is balancing content out in a satisfactory way between their player base: So RPG'er(or story buffs), PVP and multiplayer content (like raiding and flashpoints). It will be interesting to see if they mange to balance this our in a better way and how they implement the story.

Not the best example, as Never winter Nights is a really bad game overall. The single player campaign yeah, but I remember a lot of people liking the co-op features. *shrug* My point was that this isn't the first time Bioware has made a MP focused game (whether it was good or not was irrelevant), but people are acting like they've never attempted this before or that it is EA's fault that they are now, when NWN was released back when Bio was independent of EA. Of course, the real strength of Neverwinter Nights was the toolset.

I don't hold "one size fits all" against Bioware. Gaming = mainstream now and a tool in societal ongoings. So diversity suffers in advantage of mainstreaming. A lot of gamers enjoy those games and the makers guaranteed a hefty profit, win-win overall, except creativity maybe but is that important?

There are a couple of games that just got out of date too much for me to play. I can't play with pixilated graphics.
