Which is a wise policy if you ask me.

In hindsight LOTR Shadow of War's MT system, while still incredibly annoying, pales in comparison to what is apparently coming with Battlefront 2. Do you think so? Introducing tweaks and grind for in-game progress to promote paid cheats is pretty much a new quality of the shitcrate. P2W has been done in MP before already - paid cheats not so much. OK, there was the last Deus Ex that did it too - it kinda didn't hit the audience that hard. That's because Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had New Game +, so midway through your second playthrough(if you were a completionist) you had all the abilities unlocked anyway without spending a dime on MT.

Wasn't the grind and restrictions in that game actually worse than in Shadow of War though? I could have sworn that Deus Ex actually locked 'skill points' behind a paywall. At least with LOTR you're just paying for a slightly better orc. Not that I support either system, or any form of MT in single player, just pointing out the lesser of two evils. EDIT: Ninja'd. Still, having to use new game + for a full, completionist experience over spending money is pretty crappy. Especially when you consider most people don't actually play a second time through.

I don't see how. In most RPGs you can't unlock and master every skill available to the protagonist in a single playthrough. At least NG+ allowed it, unlike say the games of the Shepard Trilogy where you never could even with NG+. I don't like MT for SP stuff, but if you can unlock them normally in the game then I don't really care since then just don't buy them.

How about not buying the game? You can do that too, but there's no reason not to voice your annoyance in regards to things you disagree with. It's not like anyone else is holding back on other matters. *cough*"representation"*cough*
What I find curious is consumers that feel the need to protect a mega corporation that really needs no help to protect its interests. It's the consumers that are mostly powerless in this equation, not EA. (or rather, that power isn't focused with the consumers, and therefore very limited)
EA is still making tons of cash no matter what, it's the games you are going to play that will become progressively more pushy and annoying in regards to pushing you towards MT. Yet, for some reason you (and others) still see them as victims somehow.
What are you talking who says I’m protecting EA? I don’t like their practices it’s just that they’re not the worst company in America bad.

Yeah, everyone agreed on that I think, it just seemed that you really cared about the fact that people were protesting their practices in one of the only ways they had. The best and most efficient way is to vote with your wallet.

Maybe their eventual end goal is to have just a single player buying a billion dollars' worth of DLC per game.

This is different. There are more than 300,000 downvotes on the companys response. If any decent fraction of those cancel preorders it's a huge blow. If word of mouth spreads it's even greater. And this is a title ea was banking on harder. The beta was enough to decide not to pre-order. At least for me and most of my friends I played with. All we can do now is hope the game community comes to their fucking senses and boycots the shit out of pay to win games.

Battlefront II
A single-player campaign of 5-7 hours? That's barely a DLC and was the only reason I was slightly interested.
More generally, if EA just spent $400m on Respawn (and gutting Visceral) they are going to want a return on their investment.
Aside of forum and reddit hate, my suspicion is that despite some reduced game sales due to microtransactions, the amount enough people spend on those items more than makes up for it. Boycotts and campaigns, whilst worthy, I don't think they actually impact the bottom line, or companies would stop doing this.

My bet is that the bottom line for SW titles is higher because of the license cost they have to shell out to Disney.

A single-player campaign of 5-7 hours? That's barely a DLC and was the only reason I was slightly interested. Same here. I bought the first one (foolishly) assuming it'd have single-player content, or at least the ability to single-play big arena battles as was possible in the older-generation version that came out 15(ish?) years ago. Ultimately my fault since I'd have known it wasn't what I wanted if I'd bothered to read much about it ahead of time, but still a big disappointment, and not a mistake I'll be repeating.

Reddit Newblet question: I keep seeing "gilded," but I have no idea what it means. Someone paid several real world dollars to add a gold star next to someone's comment or post. That person gets to view reddit ad-free for one month, plus they get access to a few other premium features. It's possible to give gold anonymously or with your name attached, and it's also possible to buy it for yourself. The money goes to staff salary and server upkeep, generally.

Unless Reddit outrage effects their bottom line somehow, I assure you they're not gonna give a shit. EA sees numbers and nothing more.
