Usually disclaimer, I did try to search because I was sure there was a thread already about the game, but search function said NOPE, so... I dunno. NOTICE: the thread is about the DICE/EA Bfront, not the older series, although if you wanna talk about those for comparisons or whatever, it's perfectly fine.
So, anyone looking forward to this one? I haven't played the first BFront fortunately, apparently it didn't have much content, it had an overpriced Season Pass and all that disgusting shit. BFront II it's said to be base game, and all upcoming content to be free of charge, this way they want to prevent the community fragmentation the first game suffered. So no season pass, but of course microtran$actions, wouldn't expect anything less from EA. This garbo exists ever since BF4 though, although I think it was only well "balanced" in that game, the battlepacks didn't give you any weapons or shit like that, just attachments and some skins. Progression was still a thing to unlock stuff.
So open beta is going live on the 6th of October apparently, so we'll see how it goes. I'm already seeing streams on Twitch, game looks nice and all that as usual, but who knows if the game is actually any good.

Forgot to mention, the game has locations and characters from all eras. Original trilogy, the prequels and the new trilogy going on right now. However, they mixed everything in the game, it's actually "cross-era" so they put Rey and Han in the same map fighting together alongside with Boba and Darth Maul. Completely disgusting decision if you ask me. Wouldn't be so hard to limit characters to certain maps and stuff? To keep the lore consistent at least. Droids wouldn't fight alongside Imperial forces, because that never happened; and fucking clone troopers can't have the assistance of Han Solo, that's completely messed up.

Big fan of the original series here.
I never bothered with the reboot series with EA, pretty much cause it went down as I expected, a battlefield with a star wars skin based off responses to the game. So it's essentially lacking various things the original had, the big one being galactic conquest (which I hear this sequel still won't have). Odds are I won't bother with this one either although it has drawn just a tad bit of interest where I'll try the beta just to at least see for myself. It doesn't help that I'm honestly not a big Star Wars fan, I've just had so little interest in it which is funny since I'm a big fan of space sci-fi franchises like halo, mass effect, battle star G, Star Trek, star ship troopers, etc etc.
As for this "free DLC or content support". It's flat out horse shit. The fanbase is paying for it one way or the other whether it be your season passes, DLC or microTs. I've argued this point for H5 and if no ones buying the microTs, don't expect to get this "free content". While true it won't divide the playerbase up like season passes, it still opens the doors for an aggressive push on microTs and there are suckers out there, enough to warrant companies stating this year being an all time high for microT profit. I've also heard SWBF1 (EA version) did sell weapons if one wanted to obtain them faster, I can see this blowing up into a much bigger issue with the sequel introducing loot crates which already has people worrying about a pay to win setup.
I do think SWBF2 will probably be better than the first, but I don't think that'll be saying much. The first set the bar so low to start out with with no campaign, galactic conquest, space battles, etc etc.

I'm expecting a negative review from AJ. I was watching him play with Del and OJ. They were calculating how many craftables would be needed to get all the enhancements, etc for the weapons and chars. How much and how long it would take. I dropped in, in the middle of the discussion and it doesn't sound good. AJ was trying out all the classes; the officer class seems totally useless and weak.

Yeah, I saw AJ stream today, literally you get weapons at random from packs? and those packs can be bought as a microtran$action thing? yeah, definitely not P2W... They're basically doing the same garbage Mass Effect did for MP that I never liked: throwing randomness as a reward. I don't fully understand how the progression system works for BFront, but unlocking weapons at random through loot crates is just dumb. I always liked Battlefield because you progress with different classes and weapons to unlock others, it makes sense. Random shit tossed at players does not.
About classes and/or weapons under performing, I would't really bother giving a fuck about it, that's the type of stuff that gets solved sooner or later from balance. I mean, in the BF4 beta, weapons didn't even have recoil at all, and had absurd accuracy, but that gets fixed later on. What I am worried about is design choices, because those ain't changing. If they encourage people to buy those stupid loot crates to get their gear, the game is gonna be unbalanced, P2W, and anti-fun sooner rather than later.
They went much more aggressively with those loot crate things ever since BF1 if I'm not mistaken. I don't really know for sure because I never bought the game, but for what I've seen in YT, people get skins and apparently weapons too from those boxes, then they can scrap weapons they already got to use them to craft others, or something. Pretty crap system really, you get 10 billions times garbage and you are expected to "craft" the good stuff, instead of being a normal progression system.
At this point, I'm scratching my head about BFront II, the game currently is pretty expensive for me, it'd be best I think to wait for some reviews and maybe even wait until next year. If the game has no BS and there seems to be content going and all around good stuff, then buy it, otherwise GG. I don't want to be buying another Mass Andromeda and uninstalling the shit 6 months after. Games are fucking expensive as they are already, no need to waste more of my money. But then again, I do want to play some good old multiplayer game, haven't really played anything of the sort since BF4 2 years ago.

Caveat: I only played the first few months after release (BF1=
The loot crates (dropping randomly after a match) gave pointless skins. There were like 3 "legendary" melee weapons that consisted of matching 3 pieces from drops together. The one I pieced together was a decent weapon, but nothing overpowered.
I didn't bother much about these drops. The skins looked pointless. I mean with all the action - who has time to look at the gun skin? There might have been vehicle skins too, but I don't remember since I didn't bother.
---
Loot crates giving equipment seems to be the dernier cri now. I see a lot of critique about it popping up with the latest release. If you want to track latest microbuck bullshit just tune in on Jim Sterlings channel - he really hates it. Personally, I think having a RNG microbuck driven loot crate system in PvP games makes me just facepalm. And simply ignore that game.

Probably not.
Couldn't even be bothered to buy the Ultimate Edition of DICE SWBF for $5... Which surprised even me.
At least this game has a storyline/campaign. I might demo it...
Star Wars as a franchise has become massively depreciated for me. It is one of the biggest surprises, personally, in my life.
Getting older is weird.

I was playing some of the beta yesterday when it actually started, it's pretty unbalanced in some aspects (being a beta and all). For infantry in general, all starter weapons suck, they are absolutely terrible, overheat quickly and take ages to reload. I feel they took the Mass Effect path in that regard. Not liking it one bit, I prefer the Battlefield style of all weapons are usable. They added the "bonus reload" a la Gears of War, although I liked that more in Gears, you hit R and then R again, here you have to hit R and then left click, a bit obnoxious for me at least.
Anyways, not liking the loot crate system at all, no surprises there. Each crate costs about 1000 credits and each round as a win rewards you up to 150 creds average, that's BS. And since apparently most weapons if not all plus star cards for abilities are locked in this crate system, I don't think that's gonna be too fun unless you buy crates with IRL money. For some reason infantry fight wasn't that exciting for me, however the Starfighter mode, ship vs ship was a blast. Took me a few minutes to figure and understand the weird controller scheme for M&K, it's different from the first game, at least as far as I remember from my time in that beta. But once you figure it, it's really fun. Ships are actually different, some more powerful, some more maneuverable. For instance the A-Wing is a monster that can melt anything rather quickly and it's very fast and maneuverable, but it's also very flimsy. Hero ships however are super hard to unlock (you gotta get points in that round to be able to buy a hero ship, and they are very expensive), rounds end super quickly and you barely get enough points to buy one, if any at all.
Another thing is how they locked the Field of view to 55, disgusting. Specially in starfighter mode, it's very easy to find yourself crashing into Destroyers and whatnot when you're turning the ship because you can't see shit. It's apparently only for the beta, because it's a grayed out option in the menus, so it's there for a reason, you just can't move the slider.

I tried the Beta, and I already uninstalled. For starters, it's not my kind of game, with TTKs so low. Add in that starter guns suck and I was raging after 3 games. It does look nice, but also really cluttered. Too many lights and effects.
Actually, I should have tried starfighter mode before uninstalling, but I'm not gonna buy the game anyway so I cba to reinstall.

That's why I pretty much only played starfight, it's absurdly fun. But infantry combat as of now in the beta, is rage inducing. I presume they're gonna tweak ttk and gun balance in general, but I still don't like that whole loot crate garbage. Well see later after quite a few reviews, but I don't think I can justify paying the absurd amount of money the game is gonna cost me just for the starfight mode...

You beat me to it. Yep, that's what I expected. I'm also expecting counter arguments; Joe's talking about the beta, it won't be that bad when the game releases, etc. I was watching BM playing this earlier on the Naboo map and he was also shooting down some aspects of the game play. Overall, I can see the graphics and sounds are good. I'll be waiting for Joe's (and others) review / gameplay on the SP which I'm interested in. Will the story be good?

Seems like the grind for the loot crates will be insane lol. Reminds me of having to play 20 games of GoW4 just to have a "chance" to get anything good. You'll be spending an easy 20 hours + just to get scrap to do anything with it too.

Yeah I was on the stream the first time Joe opened a box and he got the "pose" lol.
It's completely random as he said, although not all guns have to be crafted according to what we've seen on the beta. And I'm not particularly against everyone getting the same amount of credits, that's just like it was in Mass Effect. It promotes more teamplay and less selfishness over trying to pick the most try hard combination to get the the higher sum of creds, it allows people to play the way they want knowing they're not gonna get punished because they didn't pick the most OP kit with the most OP gun every single time. I think that's actually a good thing.
Point still remains, it's completely random with no actual sense of progression, all locked in these loot boxes and that's completely bullshit. EA/DICE can still tweak some stuff, but this is the system we're gonna get. As Joe said, this ain't a beta, it's just a pseudo demo or a server stress test. Game is finished for the most part, they just need to tweak it a little bit.
Again, I'll see how this game shapes up, but I'm not buying anything right now nor when it launches. Not with the price it has and not with that awful system. I sure as hell hope Battlefield don't head this direction, I really liked that franchise.

I decided to play a little of the beta because a) Star Wars, and Its free Not usually my kind of thing, but star wars I tried some of every game mode (well, the ones that were available anyhow) and like... I have some thoughts: The graphics, visuals and sound effects are AMAZING The controls are quite... bad Trying to move a clone trooper/droid feels closer to trying to move a bus with their speeds, and aiming is sluggish and bah. The weapons are also pretty bad, the only gun I actually managed to get a kill with was the sniper-thing the specialist has, and thats basically because I was stood up on a balcony and people were trying to come through a door and I was like pew pew pew pew pew pew and I killed a few of them that way, but other than that the only kills I got were with grenades... which blew me up too. The camera feels bad too tbh, and like... Id have expected that it would have been possible to zoom like down your weapon... that would have been good instead of just zooming into your weapon but having exactly the same viewpoint. Playing as Darth Maul (in the arcade mode) is kinda meh, I cant find the block button haha Flying starships is wonderful They all feel great, the combat is great, again the controls are kinda meh but its just so awesome I dont really care I actually LOVED being a pilot and had lots of fun, it was the first thing I tried actually... it took me a few moments to realize I was actually playing with real people, idk why. Whenever I died, it was either because of Y-Wings or from hitting things, which is unusual... youd think fighters would kill me more than anything, but it was ALWAYS Y-Wings. In both ground/space levels I think a weak point were the objectives. I cant really say why, but I just didnt like the way they were done. I dont know whether it was my fault or idk something else, but I only won one game and that was in space. The objectives felt impossible to do when I was on the side who had to do them, and when I was on the side that had to stop them being done they felt impossible to stop. Especially in space, I just wished that the objectives werent really there so I could just fly around as I wanted and explore the map without constantly being needed to do something. It also felt like the bombers were the only things that could be used to complete objectives, rather than having objectives suited for the different classes, like destroying a number of fighters for the fighter/interceptor classes to make them more useful. Im still not sure how to unlock more things either. I bought some crates with credits (which are faarrrr too expensive, fyi) and didnt get anything useful whatsoever. I wanted more weapons but idk where to get them... I couldnt play the ground battles at all but I did ok in space, I think the amount of people I killed in comparison with the amount of times I died was ok-ish??? I definitely killed more than I died, but I did some stupid things haha Not sure whether Ill buy the game or not, but I really quite enjoyed flying starships

I played the beta, and here are some thoughts: - Looks pretty (BF1) - I was expecting more players per game, like 32v32 (20v20, 8v8, 4v4) - The controllers for the starships are TRASH - The SP campaign looks promising - Heavy trooper mustard rice - feels like BF1 (but way more, uhm... downgraded, with the gameplay i mean), well it was made by DICE after all. - 3 person perspective can be as good as bad (idk how to explain this)
i give it 6.5/10, just my humble opinion tho', keep that pitchfork out of my sight.

Huh, why you guys think the Flight controls were bad? I think they were pretty good for mouse and keyboard scheme (I assume they're good for controllers too). They are arcadeish of course, but that's the idea, easy to fly, but with a somewhat clear skill behind it. There's 2 options in the menus you must tweak or else it'll feel pretty horrible. It took me a couple of minutes to get it right. In Battlefields, flying jets is realistic, although utterly awful for a mouse and keyboard scheme. Next to impossible actually due to the constant need of input the ship needs. They fixed that in BFront by making the input constant, which works much better imo.
Anyways, I felt that Rebel fighters were much better all around than the Empire options. The regular TIE is pretty good, but the Advanced TIE can't compete with the A-Wing for shit.
Some other things I noticed wad the uselessness of some "hero" cards in certain maps: Take Navoo for instance, why the heck did we have access to fighters there? you never have a clear shot on anything on the ground, and if there's no enemy fighter on the air you just wasted your points. The Clone Trooper transport ship or LAAT/I is the most bullshit excuse of a poorly made concept I've seen in this game. It was on rails, so you couldn't actually fly it, even as you spawned in the pilot's seat, and it had the most worthless abilities. It was all around a waste. They should let people spawn in the thing and perhaps use it as an actual troop transport like in BF3/4 to get behind enemy lines or something.
The duration time of the starfighter rounds were extremely short. By the time you had enough points to buy yourself a Millenium Falcon, either someone else did it or the round ended.

It wasnt about the arcade-ishness of the gameplay it was more the actual controls. On the PS4... bah, I cant remember exactly. I think the left joystick controlled the gas/brake and the right joystick controlled the... idk... whether you were going up or down (or looping), which direction you were going, etc... there was just something about the joysticks that felt so wrong to me and I cant figure out why, but it really did. I never really got used to the controls even after playing lots of games, I found myself using the wrong buttons for the wrong things and I expected buttons to do what they didnt actually do. Theres nothing wrong with how the starfighters handle and feel, but more with the buttons you use to control them, I found
I actually tried to be a vulture droid and a tri-fighter in Naboo, I kept getting killed by... I think it was a bomber??? So I went back to the ground I really dont like fighting bombers haha, they feel so powerful

I really want this loot crate system to die and become seen as completely not viable anymore, but sadly people keep rewarding developers for doing it when it's a very anti-consumer move.
It was annoying enough when games like Overwatch did it, but at least somewhat tolerable since it was only cosmetics in the crates. Now with Battlefront from what I'm hearing about it, it's basically a pay to win game on top of the base $60 price tag since anybody will be able to drop $500 on day 1 to get a bunch of level 4 equipment cards and steamroll everybody else with massive advantages.
It'd be great if the gaming community could decide that EA shouldn't be rewarded for this kind of bullshit in their games.

Apparently they don’t care.

i actually prefer to use only keyboard to fly. The default configuration for the keyboard was bizarre, it forced you to use the mouse to get a clean shoot. And it didn't let me change it, so i could fly with the arrows and W,S,D,A (like in BF).
