Looks like EA is done with single player titles. At least the ones that can't be laced with microtransactions.
I'm all about japanese devs now it seems.

Looks like the license isn't really flying. 10 years and all that came so far was a bare bone shooter, a PtW grinder from the first look of it, a game in trouble and another studio hitting the EA graveyard. Star Wars is a money machine, doomed to be successful with all the millions involved that Disney gobbles up. They are going for biggest possible audience for milking - not for best game.

It's been three years...and Battlefront sold a lot for EA and Disney. Plus the game is not dead or in trouble...it's just EA following it's audience. To quote: "Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe. In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design" They also revealed that most of the assets are being ported over for the re-tooling as the base of the game, so my guess is they were far enough along in development where not a lot of new stuff is being made for the game from scratch, which in turn also means the new focus of the game, (id wager a PUBG/Overwatch style thing or some form of multiplayer like that) will be in lockstep for that sort of "blue collar" gaming experience that I am sure Disney is happy for, hence the multiple experiences line. So yeah...the thing i'm more concerned for is what does this mean for other EA games going forward. Is this a one-time deal or is it now company mandate?

Honestly I'm not sure what to make of this news, it's been running around in my head since I heard it & the strongest conclusion that I'm coming to is to make the game more like an MMO type of adventure, but, therein lies the problem. Videogames go through fashion trends & it is up to the people that make & produce them to see where that trend is & where it is heading, yet I get the feeling that EA are trying to put all of their eggs in the one basket, yet, if you look, the sort of MMO's loot & shoot trend is starting to die down now, at least as I've been seeing it, so is this a wise move? In my opinion, no, a producer like EA should chrun out games of different styles to see in what direction the fashion is heading & thus help them keep their fingers on the pulse more. Well that's just my opinion on the matter, gonna do some more thinking on this & see where my mind takes it. It does seem like an all-in approach on MP and microtransactionry. They are milking it... LucasArts should never have been dissolved. Disney should have taken that opportunity to in-house it, and expand the team and their profits. Everything is about gambling and greed. Two things I abhor.

This is what Soderlund meant about Mass Effect returning down the line as fresh, if it even does. More micro transactions, loot boxes, shared worlds. Milk more money to support games which have become too big to create now. A base game is not enough. It's why Andromeda still has multiplayer updates. The only way games like Dead Space and Mass Effect return to their roots, or return at all, is if they are sold off to an independent developer. I don't hate multiplayer, but this shift in focus away from single player is... annoying.

Wasn't this also directed by Assassin's Creed chick? No, Amy Hennig previously worked at Naughty Dog for Uncharted 1-3. Though, the post didn't say EA fired her or anything like that. Mainstream press would have used that as a headline. Yes, but I think she also worked in tandem with Jaden Rose( or something?), that worked on first AC and then two.

who are those players they test their concept game with? And why do they mention fundamental shifts in the marketplace without saying what those shifts are ?

LucasArts should never have been dissolved. Disney should have taken that opportunity to in-house it, and expand the team and their profits. Everything is about gambling and greed. Two things I abhor. LucasArts was a shit studio though by 2005, mostly because of that issue of greed. Their reputation post KOTOR 2 was mud and went downhill in terms of quality control from that point on. Them being dissolved was a good business move on Disney's part, and giving the license to EA was a good move since it puts a bunch of titles into their plates to make and be massive vs worrying about an in-house studio team. It's a laissez faire strategy. Speaking of business...something to keep in mind regarding development costs, as we got a bit of a confirmation regarding the dev costs of Dead Space 2 which was released in 2011. These type of numbers are rare to get...even if they are not exact like Zach Wilson admits they aren't. But the numbers do match the average costs - roughly $60 million for the budget and a possible $60 million matching marketing. Marketing costs have shifted heavily since then, less massive ad campaigns and more online word of mouth now a days, but its probably comparable. Of course...the shift of a service model is lucrative...but it's not really gambling or greed...it's making ends meet. Sad, but ultimately true. Of course now that that ship has sailed it's likely not going to change, although the only way it will is if we actually adjust game prices to their actual costs...if a game was sold digitally or at retail for the near $100 it should be...perhaps things would be different, but thats all academic now.

I suppose this is all part of EA's MasterPlanTM to release fewer games every year but to have people play those games for longer because it's going to take them ages to earn enough loot boxes to progress a level?
At this point, I'm beginning to suspect EA does this shit on purpose because gamer tears are EA's preferred brand of lubricant.

Bioware's fate if Anthem flops. This. EA only really cares about their money makers i.e. DICE, EA Canada (FIFA series) and the Sims Devs. Bioware is expendable and I predict Anthem will flop hard.

The game got cancelled and the assets built are being transferred over to EA Canada to build an open world Star Wars game with microtransactions. What a damn shame...

...No more Dead Space? (DE3 and BF:Hardline can burn in hell tho')This is what i was worried about...Dead Space 3 was left on a cliffhanger and now there will be no answer for it. Dead Space may have gotten a bit weaker with each entry, but there was still a story to tell there and the game had ultra smooth gameplay and a slick interface. EA just please sell the IP to Sony or some other entity that will take care of that series. While you're at it, get rid of that NFL contract you have in a chokehold....i've stopped playing madden since 2005....first time i played NFL2k5 i never looked back...that game was and still is superior to madden even all of these years later....

And RIP Dead Space: best action horror there is. Not to sound like an ass but, Dead Space has been dead since the 3rd game. I liked the sci-fi setting a lot, but as a horror game, I preferred System Shock 2 for that. (Which used to be published by EA oddly enough, now it's owned by Nightdive studios.) BTW, System Shock 3 is in development now.
