I think they passed it off on the harsh environment as why they survived. But, yeah it doesn't make sense when talking 1/2 ton creatures. Ants, sure. But Krogan have to be resource intensive even in small numbers, in the billions I'm not sure a lush world could support them. Whats crazy is if there isn't a big amount of violent death Kesh might see a Billion direct decedents. And that's from one krogan pair. Hell it could be a trillion or more if they start breeding young enough. For my sanity I assume its around 300. Which makes me wonder how evolution might play out. They literally would begin to starve to death with such great numbers. Would evolution come into play and reduce the number of eggs in a clutch, and perhaps even the number of females born? Both factors together could make a tough, viable race ready to stomp out all the major galactic and extra-galactic threats out there.

I imagine that would be quite a long way off, but if the krogan lived in relative comfort for more than a few generations, I imagine there would be some meaningful changes to their physiology over time. Their signature redundancy would probably be reduced. No need to have so many extra organs when the risk of failure is greatly reduced, and many would just end up vestigial.

What could be interesting is they are long lived enough that they might see the starts of mutations like that occurring. But normally you need quite a few generations before significant evolution takes place. Maybe their somewhat regenerative nature accelerates evolution though.

The crazy thing is, if the Salarians had used the genophage to reduce clutch numbers to 1 instead of inducing obscene numbers of still births then the Krogan could've risen from the ashes of the initial blow to their fertility, perhaps accepting the punishment more than they did. The current genophage was cruel despite being necessary to curb Krogan aggression.

The current genophage was cruel despite being necessary to curb Krogan aggression. Which, funny enough, did not curb their aggression. It made them more pissed off. The salarians uplifted them, used them and when they became inconvenient, made sure they could no longer be a threat (with help from turians). It was shitty all around and, as you said, very cruel.

Pretty much, if they ever described the cure as that I don't think many would be against it, though I guess that removes the dilemma. At the end of ME3 they kind of imply the cure did that in the slides if you cured it, but its just a slide so who knows.
