It's been a heck of a year in gaming since march of 2017. Fast forward to a year later, one week before March 21, 2018, and we have had one of the best years in gaming history.
The hype for Mass Effect Andromeda was high but skeptical at this point last year with the EA early access and weird facial animations. At least on this forum. I personally joined the forum bc at the time I was looking for a new career, and I was impressed by all the footage I had seen of the game. I was also hyped for 4K HDR gaming.
Despite my own gripes about the game (uneccesary cliffhangers, no vehicle combat, not as much enemy variation, Asari Clones, no melee combos/various animations, and weak main antagonist), I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It's really the only game since mass effect 1 that gives me the same space odyssey feeling where the joy of playing simply comes from exploring alien planets and commanding your ship/crew. It's also one of the few games where I could connect with the protagonist as Ryder was more of a rookie in over his head rather than a trained veteran.
I have played Zelda: BoTW, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassins Creed Origins, Shadow of War, Nier Automata, Monster Hunter World, Mario Odyssey, Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, Ghost Recon Wildlands this year. I've also replayed some of Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption, MGS Phanton Pain, asssassin creed Blackflag, fallout 4, Mad Max, and Watch dogs 2.
After diving into all of these games, I still think Mass Effect Andromeda is one of my favorite gaming experiences this past year. I think it was the level of immersion in a sci fi outer space world that no other game has ever offered. Similar to how I truly felt like a pirate and assassin in AC Blackflag at every moment or similar to how I truly felt like Batman in Arkham Knight, ME Andromeda immersed me in the boots of an explorer who becomes a hero.
I think, in my opionion, Mass Effect Andromeda was the most underrated game this past year. It is the most underrated game I think I have ever played when analyzing everything it offers compared to other games.
Yes it deserves some criticism, but it is a shame to not see the game expanded upon. If I had the resources, I would fully back a sequel and improve on what was already pretty awesome.
And a polished turd is still a turd. This is not the case for MEA. It was more of the slightly odd looking mutt at the kennel that no one gave a chance so it was put down.

I will say I enjoyed Mass Effect: Andromeda more then the games people compare it too, but I don't think it was underrated either.
My core belief about the game has not changed and that is BioWare wanted to make a game to try and appease the vocal critics online and instead only got ridiculed for it. When playing the game for the first time it really did feel like a fan fiction type of game where they were focused on the "favorite parts" instead of making a good game in the Mass Effect universe. To me regardless of what happens with Andromeda I really hope its the "kick in the pants" BioWare needs to realize they cannot make people happy for people don't know what they want.

I dunno, man. I gave it multiple chances, but I always felt like I was in a cheap millennial sitcom. It was only missing the automated crowd- laughter machine (or whatever it's called).

I like it. I think it's fun. I wasn't looking for Shepard 2.0 - which is good, because the only way I was getting that is if Alec remained alive.
My main gripes with the game is that major plots were left unresolved, no DLC was made and very important things are being wrapped up in novels. That last part comes down to removing player choice at the deepest level possible.

I've played shitloads of games during the years, during 2017 also, as my job is to playtest the games. MEA was and is easily my favourite of them all, and you're right about nothing immersing more into explorer boots. There hasnt been a game I've been so invested after ME1 came out, and I have a bit of a hard time to play ME3 and especially ME2. I dont think its underrated, there are these idiots who spout their disappointment as everyones truth, and I think most of ppl dont have the energy anymore to answer or lets say feed the trolls... From all the hyped ones, Witcher 3 was a major letdown after all the hype and I stopped playing it quite soon.

Same...on my very first playthrough i actually fell asleep playing it a couple of times due to how boring it was in parts. I have NEVER done that playing ME games 2 & 3.....just unheard of. As i mentioned in another thread, i tried to give it another chance with another playthrough, but the characters, the story and the overall experience was still lacking..... ......amazing art direction and design and impressive visuals throughout most of the game tho....

To me, MEA is an odd game and a very mixed bag. I think it easily has the best combat BioWare ever did, at least in single player, where I thoroughly enjoyed shooting walnut people in the face. MP combat isn't quite as good due to an overabundance of nuisance units and the AI's tendency to crowd you, but fine for some fun with friends.
The writing on the other hand... I don't know enough about writing to state that it was objectively bad, but boy did I heartily not care about what any of my crew had to babble. As was already said in this thread, many situations merely seemed to miss the canned laughter track. (Hey! I have an idea for a mod!) I played it to the end because I enjoyed the combat, and because I kept thinking "it's a BioWare game, the writing will get awesome any time now! Any time now...".
That said, I still think I got my money's worth out of it, so I'm not bitter or anything. I just expected a bit more, especially in the story/characters department.

I don't think it was underrated. I think people expect different from different genres of games, and more specifically from Bioware games. One of the things I liked the most about the OT and even Dragon Age since we're talking about Bioware as a whole was how deep the World/Universe was. How much stuff was going on. Every time you talked to someone you were learning something else, the Morning War, the Quarian Geth conflict, the Genophage, the Contact War. You were learning about different cultures. In Dragon Age, you have the Mage/Chantry conflict, the Tevinter and slave trade, the Qunari, Segregation, so many over arching themes. What you were doing was one story in a bigger universe.
ME:A was just shallow in terms of story and depth. There was nothing to the new galaxy really, and nothing really to the Kett or Angarans that grabbed me.
Did Bioware catch more flack because of their name, most certainly. But, at the same time, many people bought the game based solely on their name and past games so it all evens out to me.
One thing I will say, and I've said it before, this game did catch way too much flack for too much SJW, it was ridiculous. In Dragon Age and the the OT you had Eugenics, Slavery, Segregation, Discrimination, Genocide, Religious Themes, Nationalism, Xenophobia, and other themes larger than what you saw in Andromeda, not even close. I'll never understand the outrage of social issues in this game.

Most underrated or most overhated ? Can it be both? Of course, I just feel the game received globally more hate (for being different) than constructive criticism. Yes, the animations were laughable (at least at launch) and the memes were deserved, but the game would have got a tenth of the hate if it were a new IP

I'll never understand the outrage of social issues in this game. I think it is the era of the game being released now for people will look for anything to be outraged about instead of just moving on. So when BioWare makes a game with those subjects its an attack on the people that are not in those groups. Its just like how people will add up the different romance options and then complain that certain groups are over represented because that isn't the same percentage as "real life". Its why I have been saying a lot that BioWare needs to stop listening to the internet for there are too many people that outrage at a level that it is nearly their profession for they will find something and even if a developer addresses it in future games they will just find something new. I think the animations were a good example of that for yes there were some really bad animations, but on the whole at least how I saw it they weren't nearly that bad outside of the few that people kept reposting and fixating on.

I didn't find it under-rated - I found it to be an average game with technical issues.
I was satisfied, because I waited a few months and bought it used at a price whose value I felt reflected the reviews. While the reactions ranged from extremes in both directions, most people accurately described the game, based on my experience playing it. I did have to force myself to finish it tho'.

Still playing it a year later and put the most hours into it out of any game released in 2017.
The game is a lot of fun and it's a shame Mac didn't have more than the allotted 18 months to put it together.

I liked it, but I felt like when it was good- it was awesome, but when it was bad- it was difficult to trudge through...
I feel like the magic of the original trilogy was the thoughtful world building, and white the Angara were certainly thought out, it lacked the magic of going to the different alien races and just asking them about their culture and exploring through dialogue. I think exploration, while great in theory, shouldn't have necessarily been there. The current Witcher/Horizon: Zero Dawn style open world is not for Mass Effect. Point blank. I mean obviously, player choice in side missions and riding to different places and fighting dudes and collecting your credits- should've still been there, but they should've been either like 2 or 3 or done in a way that "beating them" (if they weren't destroyed) created a hub or unlocked an NPC who gave out unique armor/ a cool side mission/ or a squadmate mission.
Bioware/EA need to stop making open worlds happen, sure they happen for other games, but brilliant games like The Last of Us, Life is Strange, or Persona 5- didn't need them- and they're perceived as iconic and fun-

It's a good game, but it was a little unpolished at launch and was punished mercilessly for that. Its biggest 'faults' are not being Mass Effect 1-3, and not having quite as compelling story beats/characters as those games. Not only that. It's too big with too little content to justify it's size. Instead of creating huge - more or less - empty spaces with generic tasks, they should have concentrated on story. Anyway, in a year that saw Divinity Original Sin II, it's hardly one of the best games. It's fun for a while, but it's completely average. Not bad, not good. Just one of the uncountable games that swims with the crowd without standing out.

I've played through it once, and I'm a 20+ trilogy run kinda guy. I started a second playthrough but it only lasted maybe 3-4 hours before I threw the towell in.
Was it better that then merciless criticism it received? Yes.
But it still broke my heart..

Definitely underrated. My favorite game of 2017, and arguably my favorite Mass Effect game so far(the other contender being ME3). I really hope we get a sequel to expand and finish Ryder's story.
