Why couldn't all the squadmates be fighting on Earth while heading to the beam? Why couldn't the two squadmates left on the SR1 get A/K instead leaving A/K on Virmire? I totally agree with you on this one. If nowhere else, it would have been a great opportunity to use current squadmates as well as past squadmates who survived. Sort of like Citadel DLC but with a lot more at stake. Then again, Shepard was sent to Omega with no one. That he picks up two squadmates along the way doesn't take away that it was the case. Then there's Arrival. Solo mission entirely. I like how Hackett makes it seem like 2 extra people would be super noticeable to the batarians. Like, all those years of history where covert strike teams of several people just thrown out the window.

Or perhaps Drak could've just run off on his own and say you Ryder I'm saving my scouts. Bonus points if they actually killed him off in this sequence if you decided not to help them. I would be ok with that. I 've posted that I would have had Wrex tell Shepard up yours, and go after the cure on Virmire instead of having a standoff. I think with Wrex, I prefer that we be able to reason with him. I don't like that it's broken where he'll just auto-agree if Garrus isn't recruited but that's another matter. His dialogue about how Saren will just use them and dispose of them when they're done is something he should be able to consider, considering how he was generally level-headed about the plight of the krogan beforehand.

Only Shepard, Miranda and Jacob could really be considered "Cerberus". The rest of them are basically free agents. No one would implicate the Alliance if, say, a drell assassin or asari Justicar decided to just pop in and kill some people.

I can’t see how that mission would work with a full squad.

If anything, he shouldn't be sending Shepard if being Cerberus is the problem. I wouldn't have minded playing as someone other than Shepard for a mission. (Well, we do play as Joker for a few minutes, but not with a gun.) How about playing as Garrus (Needs to be someone mandatory, and I don't think Hackett would have given Jack the job at that point in time.)

I'd pick Zaeed if it meant getting some prime cutscenes of him being all gruff and violent toward batarians. Trouble is they can all be killed in the suicide mission, possibly leaving you just Miranda or someone else.

As for the general design question, there's a reason Bio games work the way they do. Giving the companions offscreen tasks burns a ton of wordcount, and putting them onscreen is difficult to do without breaking the engine, unless the enemies have very restricted numbers. Of course, they could build the engine and levels around having a lot more stuff onscreen at any time; I suppose the tradeoffs haven't been seen as worthwhile.

For Shepard to survive the SM, two squad mates have to survive... the reason being any of the N7 missions can be done after the SM. So, the reason Arrival was designed as a solo mission could not have been that it could be done after the SM. I think it was just to avoid recalling all the VA's to voice the various parts. Joker doesn't even say anything. instead we get a totally new, unidentified voice saying that they're ready to pick Shep up.

Drack first mentions the scouts in the mess/kitchen conversation. He says he sent them out to find suitable land-grabs. He talks about them quite a bit throughout the game; but it’s easy to miss since it’s mostly via banter. It requires he be in the party; triggered BS not override his banter; SAM to STFU; etc... Easy to miss, and hardly a focal point before Tafeno. Like I said, I never heard any dialogue about scouts even when I talked with Drack on the tempest whether its in the kitchen or any other part of the ship. I've had him in the car and never heard the scouts being mentioned. This might be the first time I’ve found something in these games that you haven’t seen. You’re like the Repository of MET Knowledge. If you’re curious, it’s during the the first conversation. He talks about it if you select “Krogan Colony” or something similar. I’m sure it can be discussed later, but that’s it’s first appearance. It’s definitely not a recurring, high-profile plot thread. Very easy to miss entirely.

Joker does say something in Arrival except its the same dialogue used when the swarm on Horizon causes interference with the comms.

Yes, I forgot about that rather obvious re-use of dialogue recorded earlier. Still, Arrival was likely limited to a solo missions because of its budget... not enough available to re-call the VA's to record a bunch of new dialogue.

In regard to something done right, I’m off to Havarl in my current PT. It’s a nice-looking planet, with rain, bioluminescent life and dim, atmospheric lighting. I like the aesthetics of Havarl. When they first released the gameplay trailer in December 2016, I immediately noticed the open, natural environment and dim lighting of Havarl. It will be cool to see how my mostly grey Heleus Lightshow armor looks in that lighting.

The only time I saved them is when I did a speedrun. What bothered me about the choice is when Drack or another squadmate would mention scouts. What scouts? I never heard any dialogue about any scouts being mentioned at all until that choice came up. Why couldn't Drack talk about them when talking with him on the tempest? I went on youtube and saw that it was some random banter that is heard in the Nomad from Drack. I did what the person in video did. Drove around for a bit without Drack ever mentioning the scouts. For the ambassador thing, I chose each of the contestants once, but chose Bradley more than the others I save them for two reasons. I figure that the exaltation of each MW species is inevitable, but I’m in no hurry to let the Kett perfect Krogan integration. Secondly, Raeka chose to face poor odds in an effort to save a few more of her people. I think she’s awesome, and she sounds like a Salarian Alec— a brilliant badass. Still, I saved the bulk of the Salarians and had to interfere with that Krogan exaltation. Bradley would definitely be my second choice. I’d not pick the others, other than to see the result. Pathfinders need to do that job, and MEA Morda is scary. She, like Sloane, was a bit different in the novel. That novel Morda was pretty cool, but still terrifying and Krogan. It's always interesting to see other peoples' line of reason for choosing one way or another. My actual story reason for saving Raeka is that as the only remaining "true" Pathfinder she's too important a resource to lose to save a few scouts (regardless of my loyalty to Drack and the Krogan in general). I kind of use the same line of reasoning for making Cora "let it go" in dealing with Sarissa (nevermind that I actually agree with the tactical decision she made). We need strong leadership to survive, and it's clear the Nexus leadership isn't up to the task. At least that's my view of things.

I saved Raeka 3/5 times.
I wasn't overly upset about losing the Krogan but I didn't like disappointing Drack.

Things they did well (with current patches obviously) Jaal Combat (though some of the powers seem to not function like they should-tactical cloak doesn't seem to add the damage bonus at all it seems) Smaller open world areas! Things that need improvement: 1. companion quests are just messy! it was kind of an interesting idea to have them to progress as the story does-but in function it just seems very disjointed and the parts don't always feel all that related. Plus you can't even do PeeBee's unless you want to be inappropriately propositioned (unless you wait till after you lock in with someone else which is not possible till much later than when the quest can be started). 2. the romance distribution is way too skewed and not just in base numbers-exclusive gay paths for both females and males are noticeably shorter and devloped with far less care. (Jill romance is not a great gay romance...imagine if Gil would have been the focus instead...what a concept!)

I saved Raeka 3/5 times. I wasn't overly upset about losing the Krogan but I didn't like disappointing Drack. I saved the scouts in my current playthrough - previously, I always saved Raeka. At the point of that choice, the krogan are usually in pretty good shape. They have a successful colony, and of course krogan have very long lifespans enabling a single krogan to produce a lot of offspring. The salarians were decimated with the attack on their Ark. They'd lost a lot a people, short-lived people, and I sometimes feel like I need to save their Pathfinder for a morale boost if nothing else. Shrug.

Yeah, I like trying different choices and reading about others’ choices. I have saved Raeka before, and I used much the logic you shared above. She’s a really good character, and losing her is probably on par with losing Alec Ryder. We don’t know if she was comparable to him in combat (few would, especially after SAM), but she was a preeminent intellect. Kallo says she inspired many of the Salarian colonists to join. That’s a tough choice in Tafeno. I hope we get to see the repercussions. In the long term, I imagine each species will be exalted. Raeka is probably the best metagame choice in that regard. I try not to metagame, though, as much as possible. It can be tough with certain choices.

I play on PS4Pro and it definitely works for me. The damage boost is very noticeable (and extremely effective!). Tactical Cloak is one of my favorite active skills; definitely the starting point for any of my weapon-specialist builds. I had been meaning to ask here about Gil’s arc. I like him a lot, which seems to put me in the minority. Typical straight dude, I’ve not done his romance arc. I guess your post tells me what I suspected.

Had the rookie decided to use all squadmates and/or call for backup, strike teams, to help on Archies ship, both krogan and salarians likely could be saved In his defense, Ryder is unable to use all squadmates. Just like in the MET, only two squadmates are available at a time.
Its actually a place I'd of dug a timer, give the option to split the party you have 5 minutes to rescue them and get to the escape platform. Easy if you stay together. but if its just you running off to save Raeka or the Krogan its a royal pain.
I can kind of dig that he didn't have a option in that the game is just a 3 person unit thing, though I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to say team 2 come with us and cause a distraction and then when you need them say team two save the krogan we are going to save Raeka. That being said outside the suicide mission Shepard never did that either as far as I can tell. Why they haven't expanded on that in later games given I think the suicide mission was mostly scene positively I don't know.

(Jill romance is not a great gay romance...imagine if Gil would have been the focus instead...what a concept!) In regard to Tactical Cloak, which platform? SP or MP? I play on PS4Pro and it definitely works for me. The damage boost is very noticeable (and extremely effective!). Tactical Cloak is one of my favorite active skills; definitely the starting point for any of my weapon-specialist builds. I had been meaning to ask here about Gil’s arc. I like him a lot, which seems to put me in the minority. Typical straight dude, I’ve not done his romance arc. I guess your post tells me what I suspected. I guess I should have been more specific it does boost weapon damage, but it doesn't boost power damage as it used to in the trilogy. Gil has no arc sadly. It's all about Jill and her baby obsession.
