Since I'm going to wait for comics sales, I'm trying not to read the thread, so I haven't seen any information. Can someone tag me with info on how many issues there are expected to be of this comic? Dragon Age: Deception will have 3 issues.

I kind of wonder if there will be another mini-series after this. It seems like it will take Issue 2 to retrieve the floor plans for the Qintara mansion, and there might be a complication with that man and the elf in the black armour. Plus, there’s the qunari invasion of the city.
And I’m willing to bet House Qintara didn’t go into seclusion for a decade because the heir really wanted to focus on his stamp collection. They’re up to something really shady. Seems like a lot to wrap up in a very short amount of time.

And you recruit several companions during a particular quest(line)?
Sounds like a prologue to me.

Seems like a lot to wrap up in a very short amount of time. May be they are just setting it up for DA4. It does make me wonder. My old DA4 scenario included a prologue where the new protagonist get’s caught up in the race to an artifact in a Tevinter city during a Qunari invasion. Bioware, just hire me. We’re clearly on the same wavelength.

So I just finished reading it and: I think the comics are introducing agents, not companions. They all seem to come in pairs which is weird for a companion who you'd think you'd want as a distinct centerpiece but good for agents as it'd help injecting some easy flavour and personality via interaction in events/text/multiplayer between them.
Also, that mabari is a clear example of the dangers and cruelty of canine inbreeding.

Or it could be a mix of both, for example say Vaea as a companion and Aaron as an Agent attached to her personal questline. What do you mean by the canine inbreeding part?

Also, that mabari is a clear example of the dangers and cruelty of canine inbreeding. What do you mean by the canine inbreeding part? To be honest I'd say the opposite was true. The mabari in the comic has clear signs of being the result of cross-breeding, the ears for one thing, which is hardly surprising since the authors wanted it to look like a bit like their pet dog. A mabari that was suffering from in-breeding would probably have too bulky a body for its legs or have too slopping a back (like the German Shepard at Cruffs a few years ago). In other words some aspect of the regular mabari that has been exaggerated. The mabari in the comic has long ears that look nothing like those on a regular mabari so must have been the result of outcrossing. As for its willingness to run from a fight with an irate mage, that shows common sense and intelligence that the humans with him agree is a wise strategy.

I thought Autumn was kind of a funny-looking mabari myself. "There's no way that hellhound is a purebred mabari!" Turns out the authors actually based her on their own dog, a Pomeranian/Chihuahua of the same name.
So yeah, she's a mutt. Which isn't a bad thing. I've seen people spend scandalous amounts on money on "purebred" dogs that were, as Moe Syzslak would put it, so inbred they can barely even stand.

I think it's accepted that mutts are healthier than purebreds. Although how Mabari came to be originally is unknown. If I had to guess is was blood magic experiments on certain dog breeds, finding the most useful traits from other breeds to create a healthy, fertile and intelligent war dog. Of course it backfired on Tevinter hilariously when they defected to a land where dogs are appreciated and respected assimilating so completely that they are now an inseparable fixture in Ferelden. They were too smart. Probably why they didn't try again or maybe the knowledge to make other 'magical' animals was lost during the First Blight.

Probably why they didn't try again or maybe the knowledge to make other 'magical' animals was lost during the First Blight. Well I don't know about intelligent animals but they have experimented with magically assisted breeding of dracolisks to increase their size and strength from the original species and the current Archon's family specialise in exclusively breeding ones that can breath ice or fire. For all we know Archon Radonis' love of cats may be more than just aesthetic. After all the first Archon Darinius was said to have animals that he used as spies and this is why he is often depicted surrounded by birds and cats. So it seems likely that they have experimented with a variety of animals, it was just the mabari that backfired on them.

I mean the general assumption would be that the mabari is a kind of mastiff type but certainly one of the large working or guarding breeds, which is about as far as you can get from the toy sized Pomeranian/Chihuahua. It is hard to imagine how you could manage such a cross in real life.

There are big dogs that can fit that kind of appearance though, so it's not really a stretch if you think of a dog like them mixing with a Mabari.

I would love that in the next game, choosing a familiar/animal companion. Don't get me wrong I loved the Mabari, but a vicious war dog isn't a perfect fit with a stealthy rogue or a scholarly Mage, unless they serve to compliment their disadvantages in a straight up brawl.

Tevinter mages creating living weapons that end up turning on them seems to happen a lot. No wonder Fenris got such a kick out of telling that story to Hawke's dog. (I suspect that Gaider was the one who added the bit about Mabari defecting from Tevinter into the lore, considering that he wrote Fenris' story and there are obvious parallels between their respective origins)

The second chapter was awesome! Aside from feeling so rushed. Tevinter seems so alive with people with distinctive lives and fashion. Quite contrary from what Orlesian Chantry has been bluffing. I wanted that kind of Tevinter manor for us in DA4. The crows that were introduced in this issue looks cool.
