I think Bioware is tinkering with the idea of possession, especially in SWTOR where Vitiate/Valkorian possessed the PC and offered power and suggestions at critical moments. However the loss of control could come unexpectedly if you decided to ignore him at certain points in the game. However the end result was the same no matter how much or how little you gave in to him. So I don't think they will try it again. Bhaalspawn Slayer, anyone? I don't like having no control over my character's actions, especially when the possession isn't a choice in the first place. It was quite a surprise the first time I played BG2....on later PTs, I just remembered to move everyone else waaaaay far away for that sequence so Slayer wouldn't have any targets.

Another callback from Baldur's Gate. But the Slayer was an avatar/aspect of the divinity of Bhaal that the PC inherited, it wasn't a separate entity with goals. Although it did encourage us to embrace our inner murderer to hasten our death and Bhaal's subsequent resurrection. Imagine the future Dragon Age game where an Evanuris/Old God offered us the power to destroy Solas in exchange for a bit of body sharing, I can imagine it ending as well as the finale in Supernatural Season 13. As in poorly.

For me, it would really depend on the setting, and the background of the PC. Would it make sense for my PC to be open to that? For example:
A Fereldan Circle Mage (my Warden) would have zero interest in making that kind of a bargain with a spirit. Sure it worked out great for Wynne, but look at what happened to everyone else with Uldred! No thank you.
Hawke: Anders and Justice. Started out great. Ended up with fiery death and wanton destruction.
Inquisitor: Probably not, it usually seems to turn out really, really badly.
HOWEVER, a Rivani mage seer who is from a culture where such a relationship is completely common? Sure! That'd be the norm for them! They have precautions in place, and it could turn out bad, but it probably doesn't usually.
An Avvar mage who actually has to do this as a requirement before becoming a Hold seer? Par for the course! Nothing weird about that at all, you just have to be careful!
A Tevinter mage? Probably uncommon, but there are a LOT worse practices in Tevinter. So for them it would really depend on the spirit and what they might get out of it, but probably not an automatic no. They'd at least think about it for a minute.

I... think you mean Spirit Warriors? Arcane Warriors are mages who draw on their own power to increase their physical strength. Spirit Warriors are warriors who borrow magical power from spirits. Anyway, the term doesn't strictly work, because the term is supposed to only describe possessed mages. But a mage who learned the same techniques might qualify, depending on whether or not the spirit actually takes up residence inside the Spirit Warrior who uses the technique. (I don't think it's made clear.) Ah, thanks for the correction. I wasn't entirely sure just how closely it applied. From what I recall, spirit warriors have to be careful in choosing spirits who agree to leave in exchange for a temporary glimpse of the material world. And sometimes inhabit trees.

Sam is the best. My only complaint is that he doesn't have a robo-squid body that I can bang with.

Depends how it’s handled.
Would be nice if it’s an increasing risk from messing with dark powers (eg. blood magic). It could start with subtle ways to mess with you and trick you into doing dodgy stuff and become more blatant after you pass a certain point. I’d expect NPCs to react appropriately, get suspicious, etc.
Could be an amusing take on the old joke about selecting dialogue and getting something completely different to what you thought. They’d need to make it clear to the player that’s what’s happening though (maybe after it’s happened a couple of times), or people will just think the dialogue system is rubbish.
